Award points for each correct answer. (Answers in parentheses are samples.) The winning team gets the Grapple Button (see page 5). CLUE 1 [412 points]: CLUE 2 [213 points]: CLUE 3 [673 points]: CLUE 4 [839 points]: Find out why Jacob worked as Laban s servant for 14 years. (Jacob wanted to marry Rachel in Genesis 29.) Name one person who was sold into slavery in the Old Testament. (Joseph in Genesis 37) Discover the least favorite chore of each person in your Grapple Team. Discover who in our class has their own computer.

3 grapple time: 10 minutes Lead the entire class in the following: Imagine our room is cut in half, right down the middle. I m going to give you two choices. If you prefer the first choice, move to the left side of the room. If you prefer the second choice, move to the right side of the room. Keep things lively by suggesting the choices one right after the other so there s little chance of discussion in between. Which do you prefer: sweet or salty? sports or music? indoors or outdoors? bike or horseback? pizza or cheeseburger? TV or video games? Now get with a partner. Decide which one of you gets to decide for both of you which side of the room you ll go to when I ask the next round of questions. Allow time for kids to find partners. Which do you prefer: hot or cold? Pepsi or Coke? getting up early or sleeping in late? Have partners switch roles. Then call out these options. Which do you prefer: mountains or ocean? the zoo or a concert? chic flick or action film? Call out your choices that your partner didn t pick for you. Which did you like better choosing for yourself or having someone choose for you? How did you feel when your partner chose something for you that you didn t like? Explain to your partner why you would or would not be happy if someone else made all your important decisions, big and small, such as what to eat, what to wear, or who to be friends with. How would it feel if God made every single choice for you? What would it be like to be God s slave or robot? It s great to have the freedom to make choices. Imagine what it would be like to live in a world where we had no say about anything. What if God, who can do anything, just forced us to love him? Why doesn t God just make us like robots so we never mess up or hurt him? Let s grapple with that! 69

4 11. Why Didn t God Make Us Like Robots? grapple team time: 15 minutes Break into Grapple Teams. Encourage Grapple Team leaders to check in with kids about their week. Grapple Team leaders will facilitate discussion, using the Grapple Team Guide on pages Afterward, kids will report what they learned. grapple team reports: 10 minutes At the end of Grapple Team Time, match Grapple Teams that chose Option 1 with Grapple Teams that chose Option 2 from page 72. Have teams present their reports. grapple prayer: 5 minutes Read the Grapple Prayer options. Have the class choose one prayer option that everyone will do. Allow kids time to pray about what they discovered. Then close in prayer. Option 1: Love-Song Prayers Make up your own song lyrics to tell God why you love him. Then softly sing the words to God. Option 2: Freedom Prayers Write a prayer on a slip of paper. As a class, make a paper chain while you pray aloud and thank God for giving you the freedom to choose to love him. 70 grapple dare As cool as robots are, there are limits to what they can do. Make a sandwich? Yes. Love? No. Hug? Maybe. Be a friend? No. God desperately wants to be in a relationship with you. God loves you and wants you to love him because you choose to, not because you have to. This means so much to him that Jesus suffered a terrible death to make it possible. Read Deuteronomy 30:19. God has left the choice of whether or not you want to love him up to you. I dare you this week to say yes to loving God. Live for God. Love him and don t stop! 5 grapple team guide Lesson 11 In your Grapple Team, use this guide to grapple with today s question. Why didn t God make us like robots? Let s see. Pick one person in your Grapple Team to be your team robot. Each person in your team will decide one characteristic about your robot, whether it s how it moves or talks or what it can do. Then, as a team, come up with a couple of tasks you would like your robot to perform based on the limitations you provided for it, and put your robot to work. What kinds of things can your robot not do? How would you feel if you could only do things someone else told you to do? Would you want to be friends with this robot? Why or why not? Read Genesis 2:8-17; 3:1-6. What choices did God give Adam and Eve in the garden? Why do you think God risked giving Adam and Eve choices even though God knew the wrong choice would lead to death? Do you think it was worth the risk? Why or why not?

6 Read 1 Corinthians 9: Lesson 11 - Team Guide What does Paul mean when he says he s compelled and has no choice? What choices has God left up to you? What can you do with the choices God has left up to you? Read Deuteronomy 30: Why does God give us a choice about whether to love, serve, and obey him? How does knowing that God has given you that choice make you feel? How can you choose to love, serve, and obey God this week? grapple team reports With your team, choose one of the options below to report what you discovered. Option 1: Robo-Friend Share what you discovered by writing a skit about having a robot substituted for your best friend. Perform your skit. Option 2: Why Poster Draw a heart in the center of a piece of poster board, and write Why in the middle. Each person on your team should write on the poster, I choose to love God because and finish the statement. Share the poster with the class.
