Memory Verse: 1 Peter 1:3 He gave us a living hope because Jesus Christ rose from death. 3:45 4:00 CHECK IN / SNACKS / GAMES: One teacher take control of sign-in: Place the Check-In Sticker on Clipboard. If manually sign-in, give the parent a nametag containing their phone number and their child s name. They will use this for checkout. One teacher lead orderly free play. 4:00 4:10 ACTIVITY SHEET / ARRIVING ACTIVITY: Activity Sheet: Distribute activity pages and instruct the kids to complete the challenge. Arriving ACTIVITY: Separating Sin As a group, invite kids to brainstorm some of the things we do that separate us from God. (sin) Say: The Bible says that we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. [See Rom. 3:23.] Our sin separates us from God because He is holy. Instructions: (1) Have kids cut out tomb printout and timeline. (2) Have kids pin stone to tomb with brass fastener. (3) slide timeline through middle square. Say: People welcomed Jesus as their King. The people were happy to see Jesus. They knew He was their King. Jesus came riding on a donkey, just as the prophet Zechariah said He would. We deserve to die because of our sin, but Jesus died in our place. He was the blood sacrifice made once and for all for the forgiveness of sin. 2 5:10 5:20 REVIEW & APPLICATION QUESTIONS: 4pm: 1 st 4 th Grade Classroom Schedule Review Questions: Family Feud Style Game (Items Needed: Buzzer) Divide group into two teams and have one person from each team come to Check-In Desk with Buzzer on it. Tell them to put hands behind their back until you ask the question. The first person to hit the buzzer gets to answer (the) question. Award team 10 points if person answers correctly, if incorrect then the other team can steal the points. Pick new people each question. 1. Where did Jesus pray? (Gethsemane, Matt. 26:36) 2.Who brought a crowd to arrest Jesus? (Judas; Matt. 26:47; John 18:2-3) 3.Why did the high priest say Jesus deserved to die? (He claimed Jesus spoke against God, Matt. 26:64) 4.What did the soldiers put on Jesus? (a scarlet robe and a crown of thorns; Matt. 27:28-29; John 19:2) 5.What sealed Jesus tomb? (a stone; Matt. 27:60) 6.When did the two Marys go to the tomb? (on the third day, Matt. 28:1) 7.What did the angel tell the women? (Have the kids repeat the main Point) Discussion Questions: Small Group Time The Goal is to get them talking about the lesson. Split the room up into 2 groups and each leader ask the questions giving time for a few kids to answer. 1. What did you learn about God from today s story? 2. What did you learn about people/yourself? 3. What is one thing you learned from this lesson that you can apply this week? Say: Remember the Main Point: Because Christ died and rose again we have hope. (Have kids repeat the main point) 5:20 5:25 UNIT MEMORY VERSE: Review with the entire group. 1 Corinthians 15:20a Have them repeat after you or play a game to break verse up. *Use the Memory Verse teacher aid. 5:25 ENDING ACTIVITY / PARENT ARRIVAL: As the parents arrive Ending Activity: Free the captives Divide kids into two teams. Explain that one kid from each team will play rock-paper-scissors against each other one at a time. The winner stays in the game while the other kid goes to his team s prison. If the two players tie, the first kid who calls out, He s alive! frees any of her teammates from prison. The team that sends all of the other team to prison wins. Play more rounds as time allows. Say: Jesus death and resurrection freed people from something much worse than prison. Jesus died on the cross to save people from sin, and He is alive. The high priest claimed that Jesus deserved to die because he believed Jesus spoke against God. Jesus never sinned, but was crucified on a cross and was placed in a tomb. On the third day, God raised Jesus from the dead. FAMILY DISCUSSION STARTERS: Why did Jesus have to die? Why do you think Judas betrayed Jesus? Do we ever betray Him? FAMILY ACTIVITY: Play the role of detectives and make a case for the resurrection. FAMILY DISCUSSION STARTERS Why did Jesus die? (See 2 Corinthians 5:21.) Jesus is alive! Where is He today? (See Hebrews 10:12.) Have you trusted in Jesus as your Lord and Savior? Yes, that s right, Jesus replied. The soldiers put a scarlet robe and a crown of thorns on Jesus. Then they mocked Him, Here is the King of the Jews! The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross. Jesus cried out, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Jesus shouted again and then He died. Jesus was buried in a tomb. A stone was sealed in front of the tomb so that no one could steal Jesus body. On the third day, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to the tomb. The angel spoke to the women, Don t be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, but He is not here. He has been resurrected, just like He said He would. The women hurried to tell the disciples the good news. Just then Jesus met them. Good morning! He said. Don t be afraid, Jesus told them. Go tell My disciples to meet Me in Galilee. They will see Me there. People welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem as their King, but they thought He was going to rescue them from the Romans. Not long after the people had shouted Hosanna! they instead shouted, Crucify Him! Today s Bible story might seem very sad, but it has a very good ending! Jesus died, but He did not stay dead! Main Point: That leads us to our main point: Because Christ died and rose again we have hope. Show the MainPoint Everyone say that with me (Have them repeat the MAIN Point) Very interesting! Let s take a look at how he did this! Bible Story: Play the Bible Story Video: Jesus died on the cross to save people from sin, and He is alive! The death and resurrection of Jesus is the center of the gospel. Ever since Adam and Eve first sinned in the garden, every human being who has ever lived has sinned against God. Sin separates us from God, who is perfectly holy. God must punish sin. God had a plan, though, to send His Son, Jesus, into the world as a human being the only Person who has never sinned, not even once. The Pharisees did not like Jesus. The Pharisees taught that you had to work really hard to keep all of the laws in order for God to be happy with you. Jesus taught that it was impossible for sinful people to obey all of God s laws. God s plan was for people to trust in Jesus to rescue them from sin by dying for them. The Pharisees thought by killing Jesus on a cross they were stopping Jesus, but Jesus died and rose again to pay the penalty for sin. Show MainPoint (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) 8 Play the Discussion Starter Video: Why is it hard to make a sacrifice? [Allow kids to discuss.] Would you make a sacrifice for someone you love? How about someone who doesn t like you? The Bible says while we were sinners enemies of God! Christ died for us. Jesus died on the cross to save people from sin, and He is alive. When we trust in Jesus, we receive eternal life. How can you sacrifice something this week so that others can hear and believe the gospel of Jesus? [Encourage responses.] Memory Verse: Without Jesus Raising from the dead his death would have meant nothing! But Jesus did rise from the dead three days later and is alive today! 9 The BIBLE Story Jesus came with His disciples to Gethsemane (geth SEM uh nih). He prayed, Father! If it is possible, take this suffering away from Me. But only if it is part of Your plan. While Jesus prayed, the disciples fell asleep. Jesus said, Get up. It is almost time. Suddenly Judas arrived with a large crowd. Judas kissed Jesus so the crowd would know who Jesus was. The crowd grabbed Jesus and arrested Him. Peter tried to stop the men, but Jesus told Peter to stop. Jesus followers ran away, but Peter stayed nearby. Three times, Peter was asked if he was a follower of Jesus. No! I m not! Peter said. Jesus was led to the high priest. The religious leaders tried to find a reason to kill Jesus, but they could not. The high priest asked, Are you the Messiah, the Son of God? Jesus replied, Yes, that s right. The high priest said, Ah ha! He has spoken against God. He deserves to die! The religious leaders did not want to believe Jesus was God s Son. They led Jesus to Pilate, the governor. Are you the King of the Jews? Pilate asked. Yes, that s right, Jesus replied. What should I do with Jesus? Pilate asked the crowd. Crucify Him! they answered. Pilate did not think Jesus had done anything wrong, but he handed Jesus over. The soldiers put a scarlet robe and a crown of thorns on Jesus. Then they mocked Him, Here is the King of the Jews! They beat Jesus and led Him away to be killed. The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross. They put a sign above His head that said THIS IS JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Two criminals were crucified next to Him. Darkness covered the land. Then Jesus cried out, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Jesus shouted again and then He died. Suddenly, the curtain in the temple sanctuary split in two, from top to bottom, and there was an earthquake. One of the men guarding Jesus body said, This man really was God s Son! Jesus was buried in a tomb. A stone was sealed in front of the tomb so that no one could steal Jesus body. On the third day, Mary Magdalene (MAG duh leen) and the other Mary went to the tomb.
