Service for the Lord s Day, September 6, 2015 Welcome! Druid Hills Presbyterian Church calls everyone into Christian community to explore God s purpose for our lives, celebrate God s work in the world, and serve the needs of our neighbors. We want to know you've worshipped with us! Please sign the blue Fellowship Pad, located in the rack, at the end of each pew, and pass it down the row.

GOD GATHERS US AROUND THE WORD You are invited to stand when you see this symbol. PRELUDE Aria Nick Bowden WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS INTROIT Come All You People Uyai mose CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 103:1 One: Bless the Lord, O my soul! All that is within me All: bless God s holy name! HYMN #35 Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty Lobe Den Herren CALL TO RECONCILIATION We know we shouldn't do it, but we play favorites. We know it is wrong, but we distinguish between 'us' and 'them.' We know we have nothing to fear, but turn aside from God's strong love. Let us confess together the ways we have hurt others and caused God pain. UNISON PRAYER OF BROKENNESS Gracious God, we come before you today knowing that we often fall short of your call to love one another well. We allow ourselves to be blinded by wealth and power. We ignore those around us who suffer injustice, poverty, and rejection. We tune out the cries of the poor and those on the edges of our communities. Help us to see your great generosity, hear your word of mercy, and feel your great love for all who need your redemptive grace. Strengthen us to reach out in service to those who are in need. Make us aware of those outside our own communities, that we may see them as your precious children and serve them in humility and joy. May we continue to grow in grace as we learn how to serve you. ( time for silent reflection) POURING OF BAPTISMAL WATER AND ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS RESPONSE OF PRAISE #550 Give Praise to the Lord (v. 1) Laudate Dominum

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Study Catechism: Confirmation Version Questions What is the mission of the church? The mission of the church is to bear witness to God's love for the world in Jesus Christ. What forms does this mission take? The church's mission takes a wide variety of forms, including evangelism, work for social justice, and ministries of care. Yet the center is always the same: Jesus Christ. In every case the church extends mercy and forgiveness to the needy in a way that points finally to him. Who are the needy? The hungry need bread, the homeless need a roof, the oppressed need justice, and the lonely need fellowship. At the same time on another and deeper level the hopeless need hope, sinners need forgiveness, and the world needs the gospel. On this level no one is excluded, and all the needy are one. Our mission as the church is to bring hope to a desperate world by declaring God's undying love as one beggar tells another where to find bread. ENCOUNTERING GOD S WORD (WE RE ALL GOD S) CHILDREN S MESSAGE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE LESSON James 2:1-10,14-17 p228 NT This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON I Thought We Didn t Have To Rev. Shelli Latham HYMN #727 Will You Let Me Be Your Servant The Servant Song (vs. 1-3)

GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD S PRAYER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise....our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE All communion bread is gluten free. 5 BEARING GOD S WORD INTO THE WORLD HYMN #772 Live into Hope Truro CHARGE AND BENEDICTION SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST (Please greet your neighbors with signs and words of peace and reconciliation.) POSTLUDE Sinfonia from Cantata#29 Johann Sebastian Bach. WORSHIP NOTES Today we welcome Nicholas Bowden as our guest organist. Mr. Bowden served as the longtime principal organist at Peachtree Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years. A native of Enterprise Alabama, Nick began organ study at the age of 11, became organist for his church at age 12, and had his first hymn arrangements for organ published by age 16. He has performed at major venues in 30 states and seven countries and has most recently been a featured artist at St. Paul s Cathedral in London, England. This morning s anthem and special music is offered by Mia Green (vocals and guitar). Mia is a sophomore at Woodward Academy. She recently joined the church as part of this year s confirmation class and also served on the Search Committee for the Director of Youth Ministries. Aside from writing and performing music, Mia is also a dancer. PRAYERS pray for our dhpc community Kathleen Clayton; Mary Grace Earhart; Jesse Hatton; Penny Hill; Ivey Lois Hubert; Charles Middleton; Hughlon O'Neal; Carl Sweet. The Music Task Force, Sanctuary Choir, Handbell Ringers, and DHPC as a whole, as we seek God's help in discerning the future of our worship service music. pray for our family and friends Martin Becker, Robert Cheek's friend; Teresa Edmisten's friend ; Christina Georgiadou, friend of the Vigilante and Adams families; Doyle Graves, former DHPC member; Max Greenwood, Helen Woodside's son-in-law; Rev. Larissa Kwong Abazia, Vice Moderator of the 221st General Assembly of the PC(U.S.A.); Stephanie Looper, Joe and Pam Looper's daughter; Maureen O Hara, Katie Vigilante s mother; Aletha Ray, Letia Henson's friend; Michele Rouse, Cynthia Middleton's sister; John Ruttman, Vigilante Family s friend; Ruby Sermeño, Miriam Herrera s sister; Loletia Soule, Letia Henson s

mother; Tyler Szymczak, Anne Townsley's grandson; Pam Thaxton, Steve Thaxton and Donna Durden's sister-in-law; Bryan Wilson, Mary Jane Hannah's brother; Carolyn Wright and family, J. Wade's sister. pray for our world Heavenly Father, you know better than we that there is much change happening quickly in our world. For some, the rapid pace of these changes feels awkward and uncomfortable. We thank you, loving Mother, for giving us the ability to sort fact from fiction and to see the possibility of solutions for the huge problems we face. Give us the courage to become part of the solution rather than being frozen by the fear of what might happen next. We ask your peace and blessings for family members of the young journalists murdered last week in Virginia, as well as the family of the disturbed man who committed this horrible act and took his own life in the process. We also pray for uniform wearing men and women of authority, who are being attacked, sometimes through carelessness and other times by people who are afraid and can't see that these officers are here to help us. If people would take a breath; stop and think before acting out against others, much of this senseless killing could stop. Loving God, we pray in your most holy name for the safety of all of your children, today and every day. Amen. SUNDAY MORNING NURSERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Christian Education team is looking for volunteers to help out in the DHPC nursery on Sunday mornings during worship. One church volunteer is needed each week to work with the paid staff person from 10:45-12:00. If you are able to volunteer one Sunday a month, please contact Gigi Muirheid or Elizabeth Adams. UPCOMING BREAD FOR THE WORLD LETTER-WRITING CAMPAIGN Sunday, September 27, During worship Help Stamp Out Hunger and it won t cost you a dime!! DHPC is a member of Bread for the World, which is working to inform Congress of the importance of continuing funding for child nutrition programs. Every five years Congress must re-authorize the law that funds national child nutrition programs, including those for school meals, summer feeding, and the WIC nutrition program for pregnant and new mothers along with their small children. Be part of Bread for the World s 2015 Offering of Letters by taking a few minutes to write letters encouraging Congress to renew these critical programs. The church provides pen, paper, and stamps. It will be a great investment. See J. Wade if you have questions. INTOWN FOOD PANTRY NEEDS FOR AREA HUNGRY Your donations last week were just what our Pantry neighbors wanted: tuna, Mac & Cheese cups, Vienna sausages, Spam, peanut butter, and even snack puddings for dessert! The woven basket was overflowing with plastic grocery bags which will be used this week. Please continue to bring all these things when you come to church Sunday. But don t forget tea and instant coffee, both of which are now in short supply. COMMUNITY FELLOWSHIP CONCLUDES AFTER 40 YEARS OF SERVICE Sunday, August 23. the ministry of Community Fellowship, started by Lila Bonner Miller 40-years ago, was celebrated as it came to a close. The ending of CF makes way for Mercy Community Church and DHPC to join together to provide food and fellowship to more individuals than either church has previously served. We give thanks for the many volunteers and guests who have participated in CF over the last four decades and look forward with faithful optimism! MUSIC MINISTRY TRANSITION TASK FORCE The Music Ministry Transition Task Force (Bill Armstrong, Paul Gwynn Garrity, Susan Rutherford, and Stan Thrift) met this week. The immediate work of this team is to recruit a contracted Choir Director to take the musical helm until we find a permanent Director. After that, they will begin a process of

shaping a music/worship visioning process, which will allow for mass input regarding our hopes and dreams for worship. For the first two weeks of September, church members will share their musical gifts. The choir will be back with us for the last two weeks of September. CHILDREN ARE WELCOME AT DHPC Children of all ages are welcome in the sanctuary during worship. Being present in worship is how children learn to worship, so we welcome their wiggles and whispers. Children s worship bags are available at the entrances to the sanctuary. During the Sunday School hour, we offer a supervised nursery for all infants and toddlers. And parents of small children are invited to drop off their children in our nursery, Room 115, while they attend worship. MAKE YOUR OFFERING DONATION FROM YOUR SMARTPHONE Simply scan the image you see here using your phone s Quick Response code reader, and you ll be taken to DHPC s secure giving portal, where you can make a one-time or recurring gift using your credit or debit card or checking or savings account.
