Service for the Lord s Day, September 18, 2016 Welcome! Druid Hills Presbyterian Church calls everyone into Christian community to explore God s purpose for our lives, celebrate God s work in the world, and serve the needs of our neighbors. We want to know you've worshipped with us! Please sign the blue Fellowship Pad, located in the rack, at the end of each pew, and pass it down the row.
G OD G ATHERS U S A ROUND T HE W ORD You are invited to stand when you see this symbol. PRELUDE O God Beyond All Praising Charles Callahan WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP from Isaiah 55:6, 8 11 Leader: Call out to God, who is near, for the Lord has things to teach us. All: Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are God s ways higher than our ways, and God s plans higher than our plans. The rain falls from heaven and does not return without watering the earth, making it bloom and sprout. Our words are the same. They go out from our mouths and do not come back empty handed. They ll do the work we send them to do. HYMN#12 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise St. Denio CALL TO RECONCILIATION UNISON PRAYER OF BROKENNESS Merciful God, we know that you love us and that you call us to fullness of life, but around us and within us we see the brokenness of the world and of our ways. Our successes leave us empty; our progress does not satisfy. Our prosperous land is not the promised land of our longing. Forgive our willful neglect of your word, our insensitivity to the needs of others, and our failure to feed the spirit that is within us; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. (time for silent reflection) POURING OF BAPTISMAL WATER AND ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Confession of 1967 God s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of the human mind. Human thought ascribes to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But God reveals his love in Jesus Christ by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving sinners. The power of God s love in Christ to transform the world discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of God s love. God has created the world of space and time to be the sphere of God s dealings with humanity. In its beauty and vastness, sublimity and awfulness, order and disorder, the world reflects to the eye of faith the majesty and mystery of its Creator. SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST (Please greet your neighbors with signs and words of peace and reconciliation.) RESPONSE OF PRAISE #634 To God Be the Glory To God Be The Glory To God be the glory; great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, Who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the lifegate that all may go in. Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory: great things he has done. E NCOUNTERING G OD S W ORD (WE RE ALL GOD S) CHILDREN S MESSAGE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE LESSON Luke 16:1 13 pg 79NT This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON Fuzzy Math Rev. Shelli Latham HYMN #697 Take My Life Hendon (verses 1,4,6)
INVITATION TO THE OFFERING R ESPONDING T O G OD S W ORD ANTHEM Be Thou My Vision arr. Alice Parker Chancel Choir Brian Adams, baritone Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; Nought be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best thought by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise. Thou mine inheritance, now and always; Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art. High King of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my vision, O Ruler of all. DOXOLOGY #607 Old Hundredth PRAYER OF DEDICATION Praise God, from whom all blessing flow; Praise Christ, all people here below; Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God, whom we adore. INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD S PRAYER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise....our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION
COMMUNION HYMN #516 Kingdom As the gifts are being distributed you are invited to sing: COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE All communion bread is gluten free. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION BEARING GOD S WORD INTO THE WORLD HYMN #536 Rise, O Church, like Christ Arisen Surge Ecclesia (verses 1 3) CHARGE AND BENEDICTION CHORAL BENEDICTION Amen Peter Lutkin POSTLUDE Toccata on How Firm A Foundation Claude Murphree. WORSHIP NOTES A portion of the Confession of 1967 serves as our affirmation of faith today. In approving C67 (as it is commonly known), the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America adopted its first new confession of faith in three centuries. The turbulent decade of the 1960s challenged churches everywhere to restate their faith. While the Second Vatican Council was reformulating Roman Catholic thought and practice, Presbyterians were developing this creed. The words for today s affirmation have been edited for inclusivity. For a chance to win lunch, on a future Sunday, with Pastor Shelli : pastorshelli@dhpc.org, or drop a note in her box in the office with the definition of the word, sublimity as used in this creed. Include your name. A winner will be drawn from the correct responses. Bulletin art for this morning is from Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature, The New York Public Library. "Chatto and Windus. MS Accounts for Samuel Clemens's publications, The New York Public Library Digital Collections.
Special thanks to Michael Morgan, guest organist for providing the music and his talents today. Michael was organist for Central Presbyterian Church for 35 years and has been the organist/musician for Columbia Theological Seminary for several decades. P RAYERS pray with condolences The sympathy of the congregation is extended to the family and friends of former DHPC member Laura W. Murray who died September 6, 2016 in The Woodlands, Texas where she and her husband, Russ, have lived since She is survived by Russ and daughters Pam and Jan, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. The sympathy of the congregation is also extended to former DHPC member Lynn Hooks Lowance and family on the death of Lynn s husband Dr. David C. Lowance September 9 from complications of Parkinson s. Lynn is the sister of Nancy Chambers. A celebration of his life will be September 24 at the Capital City Club in Brookhaven. pray for our dhpc community Kathleen Clayton; Penny Hill; Bobby Howlett; Ivey Lois Hubert; Elizabeth Mabry; Charles Middleton; Carl Sweet; Nick Vigilante, J. Wade pray for our family and friends Don Buffington, good friend of the Hannah family; Barbara and Scott Bushnell, Jane Weir s sister and brother in law; Christina Georgiadou, friend of the Vigilante and Adams families; Randy Green, Cynthia Middleton s brother in law; Frannie Kidd, Anne Townsley's daughter; Yvonne Odom McMillan, Cynthia Middleton s sister; Maureen O Harra, Katie Vigilante s mother, Caroline Ohnsman, Helen Woodside s close friend; Kent Powers, Cecile Hooks brother in law; Michele Rouse, Cynthia Middleton's sister; John Ruttman, Vigilante Family s friend; Ruby Sermeño, Miriam Herrera s sister; Nate Shaw, former Journey case manager, Marty Stephens, longtime friend of Margaret Ross; Bryan Wilson, Mary Jane Hannah s brother pray for our world We pray, Lord, for the children in the war torn countries of the Middle East. The lives of these small ones have been permeated by the sounds and smells of gunfire and the fear of losing family members. Give peace to those parents who kiss their children in the morning and wonder if their family will be intact when they are back together again. Families are going without so many things, a contrast to the life of so many in our hemisphere. How can children thrive in situations where they live with such uncertainty? Education is irregularly offered; medical care is precarious to attain; clean water and adequate food are rarely available. We pray, this day, for peace. Gracious God, we pray for the people in our own nation who are living with violence, especially families in Chicago, who live with many of the same fears of those in the Middle East. Will my child be safe on his walk to school today? Will there be someone with a gun at the park this afternoon? So many families live in fear of what may happen next. We pray, this day, for peace. We pray for Native American families whose lives and cultures are being threatened in the name of energy. We pray, this day, for peace. We pray for families whose lives are intricately woven with our own in this time of too many guns, of road rage, and too few people taking responsibility for their actions. We pray, this day, for peace. Loving Mother and Father, we ask you to be with all families whose lives are in jeopardy, that you will comfort them while also helping us remember to think of others before acting on our anger, fear, or greed. We pray, this day and every day, for peace for our fragile world. Amen.

INTOWN FOOD PANTRY NEEDS FOR AREA HUNGRY Urgent needs for the Pantry are listed outside the stairwell to Converse Hall. Please check the list. Sally Oats, the Food Pantry coordinator, recently wrote: I never cease to be amazed at the sheer number of caring, dedicated people who make this hour and a half long event take place every Saturday. Not only do folk work on Saturdays, but others come to re bag bulk items, organize deliveries and donations, and stock shelves. Last Saturday, in giving out 1580 lbs. of food staples, the Pantry served 157 food insecure people. None of this could happen without DHPC s donations! You are an integral part of this every week as you put food in the woven basket. This is truly an offering to God and to our neighbors. Keep those donations coming! BREAD FOR THE WORLD OFFERING OF LETTERS Sunday, September 25, 11AM Bread For The World and their partners, such as DHPC, believe more funding for nutrition programs is needed in fiscal year Increasing U.S. investment in global maternal and child
nutrition is central to successful worldwide development. It is possible to build on the impressive progress made over the last 25 years to improve and make strides in ending hunger worldwide. Congress can and needs to play an important role in increasing funding for programs for the nutrition of mothers and children! Join us in advocating for this increase in funds during an Offering of Letters in which participants write to legislators about this issue. We provide the paper and stamps, and you provide your time. Contact J. Wade for more information. PEACE AND GLOBAL WITNESS SPECIAL OFFERING Sunday, October 2 What we ve known as the Peacemaking Offering has been transformed into the Peace & Global Witness Offering. It will have a greater global reach, more significant impact, and bring peace to people through Christ. A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice across the world. Half of the offering will be used to connect with the global witness of Christ's peace and for ministries of peace and reconciliation. The other half of the offering will be used by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to advocate for peace and justice in cultures of violence, including our own, through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness. Thank you in advance for your generosity to this important special offering. WHAT A FellowSIP?!?! Today, Sunday, September 18, 5 7 PM; Neighbor s Pub patio On the third Sunday of every month, Pastor Shelli facilitates What a FellowSip, a laid back opportunity for fellowship and conversation around contemporary issues of faith. It is open to adults of all ages and coincides with Youth Group (so parents have a spot to hang out, too). This week, we ll talk about Christianity and Patriotism and brainstorm future topics. MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP DHPC Youth meet the 1st, 3rd and 4th Sundays of the month and participate in Second Sunday Lunch the 2nd Sunday. Contact Barrett Payne, Youth Director, (bpayne@dhpc.org) for more information. Today, Sunday, September 18, 5PM; Dinner and Bible Study Middle and High school youth will gather for dinner, music, and conversation. We will start a multi week exploration into the significance of water in the Bible. We ll kick things off by taking a look at the crossing of the Red Sea and the Israelites journey into the wilderness. Things to think about: What is the wilderness today? Have you been there? Is the wilderness good or bad? So, put on your swimming, uh, thinking caps and let s dive in! Sunday, September 25, 4:45PM; Worship with Shalom Back by popular demand! To help celebrate world communion, DHPC Youth will worship with Shalom International Ministry.
