1 The Network a Publication of University Presbyterian Church July & August Do you ever have one of those days when you are so distressed by the state of the world you can t bear to read the paper or watch the news? Or when you have lost all patience with human beings and their brokenness including your own? And it all just seem to be too much: too much to deal with, too much to tolerate, too much to fix? I came upon this simple prayer that helped me on one of those days. Maybe it will help you. Prayer: God of the Impossible God of the impossible, We pray for justice, peace and reconciliation; When the challenges seem too many, Remind us of your resurrection power; When the task seems overwhelming, Remind us of the miracle of love; And when apathy threatens us, Remind us of your vision of a world made whole. Help us to hope that the impossible can happen And live as if it might do so today. Amen. 5 Welcome to Our New Neighborhood Little Free Library Sponsored by University Presbyterian Church Built and installed by the University Heights Tool Library The Little Free Library belongs to everybody neighbors, friends and people we don t even know yet. Anyone can use it. That s why we want to take care of it. Help yourself to one or two of the books Take the book home read it and enjoy. You can return it to our Little Library or any of the other Little Libraries you may find along your way. If you fall in love with it, keep it and bring another book when you can. Give Books. Leave notes in them. Be a friend of all libraries by helping any way you can. Tell your neighbors about the Little Libraries. If you want to donate books to the Little Libraries please visit the church office Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Call us before coming to visit You may also put them in the bag in the Narthex or the shelf in the Holzwarth Room. Children s books, novels - if it s a book you like, bring it to share. St. Peter s Episcopal Church ~ Linen Pantry Hours & Location First and third Saturday 10-noon. Second and fourth Wednesday 10-noon. 205 Longmeadow Road, Eggertsville, NY The Threads of Hope Linen Pantry is a Mission of St, Peter's Episcopal Church. We receive gently used donated items and distribute them to families referred to us by various agencies and churches. We provide these individuals with bedding, towels and small kitchen items as they set-up their apartment so they can begin a new life for themselves. All items are given away free of charge to our clients. Needs: Your linens and kitchen items (new or gently used) Sheets, blankets, bedspreads, quilts, bath towels, washcloths, hand towels, curtains, drapes, kitchen towels, dishcloths, potholders, dishes, lamps, small appliances, glasses, silverware, serving bowls, pots and pans. Monetary donations are always welcomed. 5

7 SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE The Ministry to Community Committee will be collecting school supplies to help the Salvation Army reach their goal of providing filled backpacks to over 500 children. This drive will help students in their Summer Camp programs, children living in their Emergency Family Shelter, and those whose parents benefit from their programs. The drive will run from July 9 to August 6. There will be a collection box in the Holzwarth Room. Please see the list below for what items are needed. Monetary donations are also accepted. Please make the check out to UPC, with School Supply Drive in the memo line. Thank you for considering helping children in need. Hearts for the Homeless has their Thrift Shop at 890 Tonawanda St., Buffalo They have more than shoes available for those in need. Thanks! University Students Manse Program University Presbyterian Church offers the opportunity to four university students to experience living in an intentional Christian situation. This is an opportunity to experience spiritual growth. Participants live in the former church manse and commit to regular participation in the life of the church and service to the church and greater community. Currently there are four vacancies in this program. Contact the church office for an application or contact Kathryn Hallborg at (716) or for more information. 8

9 Hands Together in Worship and Action Your Ministry to Community Committee and North Presbyterian Church invites you to join in a unique opportunity for worship and action. On Sunday September 17 we will share a light breakfast and brief worship service at North Presbyterian Church. Our worship service will lead us into action and service to others in the community. We will complete our time together with lunch and a closing worship. Before this Service Sunday you will choose which community project appeals to you. There will be projects for children, families, and adults. There will be projects for those who enjoy the outdoors, the indoors, moving around or sitting. There will be a project for you! During NPC Service Sunday 2015, some sites and organizations included the Family Justice Center, Williamsville Youth & Family Center, Willow Lodge Veterans Medical Center, and Presbyterian Village. We need you! Work included raking, planting, painting, visiting residents, making greeting cards, preparing lunch for volunteers, and practicing music for worship. Let s have fun! A 2017 list of projects is being developed. PLEASE NOTE: For those who are unable to join us on September 17 Rev. Daub will offer a 9 AM worship service at UPC. 9

10 University Presbyterian Food Panty Needs Your HELP! Are you looking for ways to stay active and help out? Are you a student who needs volunteer hours? Would you like to meet new people and help our community? Volunteer at the University Presbyterian Church Food Pantry Stop by on a Tuesday or Thursday between 12 pm and 4 pm and meet the current volunteers and maybe some of the clients. See what it s all about. Agree to work and meet wonderful individuals who are already helping out. The 4 ½ hour shifts once a month will be interesting and worthwhile. Should you want to help more (yes!!!) you are most welcome. PLUS, you will feel good about the time you spend with us, helping our neighbors. Have a friend or two you would like to bring with you, that would be wonderful. We are in need of new individuals to help us with distributing food to our clients. You will help guide a client through our "store" to help them choose their groceries. You assist with helping to stock shelves. You may be interested in learning to work the check in desk. 11 Too many of us lead hectic lives. Our communities are filled with violence and suffering. How do we respond? How can we cope? Our personal pain and struggles can overwhelm us. University Presbyterian Church welcomes Christians from all traditions to unite in a special contemplative worship experience as we seek spiritual strength for the living of our days. Based on the style of worship practiced in the Taizé Christian community in France, these services offered on the First Friday of each month provide an oasis at the end of the week for all who are weary, troubled, or rushed. Special music from guest musicians, meditative songs, prayers, candles, and scripture readings allow each of us to find a quiet place of prayer and spiritual centering. We invite you to join us on Friday, July 7 and August 4, 2017 from 5:30 to 6:00 PM. University Presbyterian Church is located at 3330 Main St., Buffalo (across the street from UB South Campus) with parking available in the church lot off Niagara Falls Boulevard. The church is also conveniently accessible using public transportation by taking bus or train to the University Metro station.
