God is beginning something new, and God gathers all of humanity to participate. For Isaiah, God s bright light, manifested in the people of Israel, attracts and summons people from many nations to Jerusalem. In the letter to the Ephesians, God s grace makes the Gentiles co-heirs and co-partners in the Gospel. Matthew tells the story of the fulfillment of God s promises to Israel through the birth of Jesus, while simultaneously leading foreigners to share in these same promises. With the birth of Jesus, God chose a particular people, in a particular time and place, to enter most directly into the human story. Today s readings teach that God did this in order to gather all people, all cultures, into unity with God. Like the magi, we are drawn into a journey toward God, becoming co-partners in God s work. 4 January 06 Class #11 Confirmation Students 9:30 am Mass 13 Class #12, Teacher s Meeting TTS instruction (Gr 1-5) 1 st Reconciliation meeting w/parents during class 20 NO RE Classes Martin Luther King Holiday 27 Class #13, TTS instruction (Gr 6-10) Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body This Winter our students in the Junior High and Confirmation classes will be studying and discussing St. Pope John Paul II s, Theology of the Body. We live in a technological age that poses new challenges to the preaching of Gospel values. An American teenager spends perhaps one hour a week in church, if at all, and many more hours playing video games, surfing the Internet, using social media, watching TV, and listening to music on a phone or ipod. Parents, working full-time, are rarely home. So when the day comes to make big decisions about relationships and sex, choices which may affect the rest of one's life, is it any wonder that a Christian teen will sooner look for guidance from pop culture than from parents or pastors? Sex is one area where Catholicism often seems either unable or unwilling to say anything coherent to young people. While some Catholic religious educators and theology classes promote laxity regarding the body, others promote shame. Many Catholic teachers nowadays, fearing controversy either way, say nothing at all. This is where our Winter program comes in! Rooted in Scripture, the central insight of St. John Paul II is that God intends for sex to express the mutual selfgiving of a man and woman joined in marriage. Rather than use others for mutual gratification alone, he points out that the Bible exhorts us to experience the joys of physical union as a sign of the deeper spiritual union of marriage. In the Biblical view, human love is not a lifelong search for someone to gratify one's personal needs, but a genuine friendship that may find physical expression in a sacramental commitment respecting the dignity of both partners. Religious Educa on Resources for Parents Where was the internet when I was a young Mom? Wow. There is SO MUCH good out there to help, inform, educate Catholic parents, and their children. Here are some of the best of the best and why you should visit their sites. TEACHING CATHOLIC KIDS teachingcatholickids.com The most popular spot on the our Sunday Visitor parish website is Teaching Catholic Kids. Editor Margaret DeMatteo offers an ages-and-stages approach to the liturgical season with awesome craft and activity ideas, reflection questions, prayer and more. This site is perfect for catechists, homeschoolers, moms and more; be sure to bookmark this page on your browser. CATHOLIC MOM catholicmom.com True to its name, this site offers a plethora of tips, tools and reference materials for Catholic moms. Daily features include the Daily Gospel Reflections, Tech Talk and Book Notes. On Sunday, new Lectionary-based activities are posted, and there is a weekly giveaway of Catholic resources. Founded by popular speaker and writer Lisa Hendey, catholicmom.com offers moms various ways to connect and build community by joining in book-club discussions or the Small Success linkups. CATHOLIC DADS Catholicdadsonline.org This website is a great spot for Catholic dads looking to build community and strengthen their Catholic faith in the process. The topics include guy-focused themes such as work and finance, family life, culture concerns and more. Yet, catholicdadsonline offers more than just static content: it is a place to engage with other fathers who may share your same interests and concerns. If you re a Catholic dad, visit this site and be sure to check out the community sections. CATHOLIC ICING catholicicing.com In my house, we talk about kid time versus real time. 5 Epiphany this Year falls on January 6th! For over 14 years, I have been facetiously debating Fr. Bruce, our Pastor, about the date to celebrate Epiphany. The Roman Catholic Church celebrates the feast on the first Sunday after January 1st, as a moveable feast day (the date changes in order for it fall on a Sunday). I was raised with the understanding that the 12 days after Christmas led to Epiphany (Dec 26 to January 6, hence the song with all the birds and dancing people!). Well, no matter what day it is celebrated, this beautiful feast allows us a chance to reflect on the revelation by God of Jesus Christ, as the long awaited Messiah, God s Son, and the Savior of all humankind. The Catechism of the Catholic Church outlines it very beautifully in Paragraph 528. Here are some fun facts about Epiphany: 1) Epiphany, which means manifestation or revelation is traditionally observed on January 6. Since 1970, the feast is placed on the 1st Sunday after January 1st. 2) Between the Western and Eastern churches, three events in the life of Jesus are commemorated in Epiphany: the visit of the magi from the East (Matthew 2:1-12), Jesus s baptism by John in the Jordan river (Matthew 3:1-12; Luke 3:21-22; Mark 1:1-9), and the turning of water into wine at the wedding of Cana (John 2:1-11). 3) The theological significance of Epiphany relates to the narrative identification of Jesus Christ as the Son of God, or God incarnate. The Apostle Paul uses the term epiphany to describe both Jesus s manifestation of God at his birth and his second coming in 2 Timothy 1:9-10; Titus 2:13; 2 Thessalonians 2:8. 4) The earliest observance of Epiphany is found in Alexandria, Egypt, in the third century. Some believe it was a subversive celebration by the church to counteract the near Egyptian festival of Aion, the god of time, whose festival rituals are also believed to have included water and its transformation into wine. 5) Only the Gospel of Matthew mentions the visit of the magi, who were probably pagan astrologers from the East v. 1 (rendered as wise men in some translations of the Bible, and in later centuries dubiously referred to as kings). Their number is not spelled out but they likely had many companions, in spite of popular tradition numbering them at three since they brought three gifts to honor Jesus gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This rendition likely goes back to Origen, who interprets the gifts theological significance in Contra Celsum: gold, as to a king; myrrh, as to one who was mortal; and incense, as to a God. 6) The magi visited Jesus in a home, not at the manger site, as the shepherds did. This occurred up to two years after his birth. The origin and identification of the magi is unknown, though they likely came either from Persia or Babylon. Rather than being polytheists, the magi were likely Zoroastrians, a religion of monotheistic dualism. Their names Balthasar, Melchior, and Gaspar were imaginatively given to them in later centuries. 7) Comets or shooting stars were understood by ancients to be bad omens of a ruler s demise. So King Herod, an unfaithful Jew, was rightly concerned that this star signified his displacement. The text does not make clear exactly what kind of phenomenon this was, as stars often had metaphoric meanings, and astrological events are viewed relatively from one s locality. Adult Faith Forma on A DEEP, BIBILICAL LOOK AT JESUS CHRIST The better we understand Jesus, the better we understand ourselves. But who was Jesus, this itinerant preacher whom many called the Messiah? In Bishop Robert Barron's Video Series*, Priest, Prophet, King, you ll discover Jesus as the Anointed One the ultimate priest, prophet, and king foreshadowed throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. Using biblical insights and engaging stories, Bishop Barron affirms that we see Jesus most clearly through the lens of the Old Testament. Through this deeply biblical program, you will better understand Jesus, become more familiar with Scripture, and realize your own priestly, prophetic, and kingly mission, received when you are baptized into Christ. Please join us on Wednesdays beginning January 16th either at 10:00 am or at 6:30 pm. Facilitated by Noël Fuentes, our Pastoral Associate/Director of Faith Formation. Pre-registration/payment required $25. Stop by the parish office for a registration form or education@sanroqueparish.org. (*Note: The Bishop is not present in person.)
