MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT... JUST A PLAQUE During my lifetime, especially my tours in the Navy I have collected many plaques. At one time, I had a wall in my office at home where these wooden signs of accomplishment or recognition adorned a 10 X 10 wall. Some of the designs of the plaques, one I have is the design of the state of Maine. Now that coast line took some time to create on a piece of oak. Most of them now sit in my basement encased in a vinyl storage bin. In April at the Knights of Columbus State Convention our council was awarded another plaque that will be awarded to our collection. The plaque is not of any special design. In fact, I personally think whoever oversaw the design could have put a little more thought into it. However, this plaque is very significant because it embodies 16 years of hard work and dedication. Below is an excerpt from the State Council Service Program Awards application written by Sir Gary Lewis: Those are very significant numbers. Notice when you read it how this charity has grown. In fact, in the last 6 years it has grown under the direction of Dan Burke. Dan has done an exemplary job and I salute him for his great effort, dedication and perseverance. I know at times he says; how did I get myself into this but the fruits of his labors greatly benefit the children at Cardinal Glennon. For this he deserves recognition. I also want to recognize his team on this committee. Herb Driscoll you have been heavily involved and your ability to attract top sponsors is noteworthy. Ed Vokoun, the auction last year was the best. Storing all the items for us in your basement and garage is most appreciated. Gary Lewis, your application write up was icing on the cake. It was just not these four I want to recognize all who participated, Sam Farinella, Nat Lucido, Mike Mueller, Mike Annuziata, Dale Abernathis, Ruth Burke, Gail Albers, John Butler, Bob Maryas, Stev Mackanos, Heather Mackanos.... I can do it because this is our big charitable event and I know I will miss someone. Well Done Council 12022, when I accepted the award on behalf of the council at the State Convention I only wished you all could have been there with me. I wanted to show the rest of Missouri Councils what a fantastic group of men and women we are. That night I slept with that plaque with a big smile on my face because had captured the top award at a State -wide convention.

7 WAYS TO BECOME A MORE GENEROUS PERSON Is God calling you to live more generously? I have never asked this question and heard no as the answer. Every time I ponder this question, God challenges me to a greater level of generosity not because he wants me to give all my time, talent, and treasure away to others, but because he wants me to live a free and happy life. The happiest people I know are the most generous people I know, and they seem free from the things of this world in a way that is to be admired. We are all invited to that happiness, and generosity is the path that leads us there. But the problem is, life gets in the way. The demands on our time, energy, and finances are enormous. If we are to grow in generosity, it needs to be an intentional effort. We are not going to just stumble upon greater generosity. We can all do something to be a little more generous. Here are 7 simple ways you can become a more generous person. Start with gratitude. Generosity begins with gratitude. Are we grateful for all the blessings in our lives? We are at our best when we are grateful. It is impossible to be grateful and be in a bad mood. It is when we step away from gratitude that we become irritable, restless, and discontented. Make generosity a daily habit. Every day, make it a priority to do one generous thing. Maybe it s buying lunch for the homeless man by your office building. Maybe it s taking a few minutes out of your day to talk to your neighbor. Be generous with your praise and encouragement. Be generous with your compassion and patience. Be generous with your love. Whatever it is and no act is too small daily acts of giving will build a habit of generosity. Give to everyone who asks. In the Gospels, Jesus tells us to give to anyone who asks. That sounds unrealistic, doesn t it? If you opened up your wallet every time someone asked you for money, you would run out pretty quickly. But giving isn t first and foremost about money; it s about giving yourself in some way. Offer encouragement, or take the time to really listen to someone who needs it. Take a minute to say a short prayer. Find ways to share some helpful resources or a particular talent. There is always something to give when someone asks. Give your good stuff. Many of us clean out our closets and give our old things to the poor. What if we started giving our good stuff, items we actually enjoy or even want but don t need as much as someone else? Giving something we actually like might hurt a little, but it can help us grow. It also honors the dignity of the person we are giving it to. Reach out to someone who is lonely. Mother Teresa once said that loneliness is the greatest kind of poverty. And there are lonely people everywhere in our neighborhoods, schools, churches, streets, even the grocery store. Visit a hospital or nursing home, be kind to strangers by offering a smile or a helping hand, or call relatives and friends who live alone or are going through hard times. Pick an organization or two to support. There are many organizations doing great work. Which ones address something you are passionate about? Which ones do you believe are really making a difference in the world? Select the ones that are most important to you and commit to supporting them regularly, whether by donating money or volunteering your time. Give a little more than you think you can. Every time you give to someone, challenge yourself to be a little more generous. If you re about to write a check for $20, make it $25. If you re going to donate a coat, give away a scarf, too. If you want to buy a homeless person a cup of coffee, add a sandwich. We cannot do everything, but that doesn t mean we should do nothing. Don t let what you can t do interfere with what you can do. And what we can do, all of us, is look for small ways to be generous with the people around us whom we encounter every day. Generosity is about much more than giving away money or material goods. Being generous is not just something that we do; it becomes a part of who we are. By intentionally practicing regular acts of giving and sharing, you will indeed become a more generous person and be happier for it. May God bless us all with an eagerness to live generously.

Mother's Day in the United States Mother's Day in the United States is annually held on the second Sunday of May. It celebrates motherhood and it is a time to appreciate mothers and mother figures. Many people give gifts, cards, flowers, candy, a meal in a restaurant or other treats to their mother and mother figures, including grandmothers, great-grandmothers, stepmothers, and foster mothers.

MEMORIAL DAY

Ascension Day History The Christian belief is that after Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday, He rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. Jesus then walked the Earth among His followers for forty days, continually teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven. On the fortieth day, Jesus was eating, drinking and speaking among His followers. At this time, Jesus had "commanded" His disciples "that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard (saith he) by my mouth." i After all was spoken to His followers, Acts 1:9 states "And when he had said these things, while they looked on, he was raised up: and a cloud received him out of their sight." ii According to the New Testament, the event of the Ascension occurred on Mount Olivet (Mount of Olives). The reading of Acts 1:12 states "Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount that is called Olivet, which is nigh Jerusalem, within a Sabbath day's journey." iii Another mention of the Ascension occurs in the Gospel of St. Luke 24: The verses state "And he led them out as far as Bethania: and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. And it came to pass, whilst he blessed them he departed from them, and was carried up to heaven." iv St. Mark also mentions the Ascension of Jesus in Chapter 16:19 stating "And the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God." v In The Lost Books of the Bible, there is a mention of the Ascension by Jesus himself. Located in The Epistles of Jesus Christ and Abgarus King of Edessa, Jesus responds to the King, via Ananias the footman, to the King's request of a healing visitation. "But after my ascension I will send one of my disciples, who will cure your disease, and give life to you, and all that are with you." vi King David wrote a prophecy of the Ascension in The Book of Psalms 67:19. King David stated "Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive; thou hast received gifts in men." vii This Psalm is located in Psalms 68:18 of the New King James version of the Bible. Unfortunately, there are not detailed mentions of the Ascension in the Holy Bible. One theory is based on how the apostles were dealing with all these events. There was a whirlwind of events occurring in a short amount of time. Jesus came to teach and He also performed miracles; He died; He rose from the dead; and then He reappeared on Earth for forty days. On the fortieth day, He ascended into Heaven as the apostles watched. Ten days later, some of the followers were visited by the Holy Spirit on Pentecost and were able to speak many languages. There was so much activity taking place including the death of their friend and mentor that perhaps they did not want to write very much regarding the Ascension. Another theory arises from the importance of the Ascension itself. Perhaps the Ascension was not to be an important event recorded in the Bible. Jesus ascending into Heaven was not His purpose on this Earth. His purpose was to tell the world about the Kingdom of Heaven, to show all people the way to the Kingdom of Heaven, and to save all souls who follow God. Therefore, the Ascension was not an event the apostles thought to be important. viii Perhaps the writing about the Ascension was discussed by Jesus with His apostles before He left this Earth.
