2 Knights of Columbus Supreme provide some good direction and information to council Grand Knights to help improve and grow their councils. Below are five goals for 2018 from Supreme listed in red. Here is my take on how we in 2018 are addressing them: Five Things to Tackle in 2018 Aim younger: Make a concerted effort to recruit younger men into our councils. Council s average age in 2013 was 60.75, and average age now is 59. Doesn t seem like a big change, but keep in mind that it really went from to 59 given 2013 was 5 years ago Didn t think it could happen but we are getting younger. Be more family-centered: Develop programs that focus on families. We have made the Fish Fry s a community event by soliciting help throughout the parish. Also, seems small but establishing a particular fundraiser throughout the event also aids in a sense of community. This year we are collecting monies for the convent. Also, this has been the first year for a Breakfast with Celebrities after mass. Our celebrities this year are Santa/Mrs. Claus and the Easter Bunny. Both these events involve children, families and community. A Youth Soccer Concession stand managed by the Knights but worked by eight grade and High School Youth. Generate increased awareness of who Knights are and what they do: Make it a goal that every Catholic man, no matter his age, knows who we are and what we do. Council is recognized, we are involved in a plethora of events around St Alban Roe Parish. We wear the nametag and we are known. This approach has benefited recruitment as we meet and exceed State-recruiting goals. Develop strong relationships with the clergy: Our pastor refers to council as His Knights. A great working relationship where we appreciate the pastor hosting us, and the Pastor appreciates our help with building a better parish and community projects. The Knights of Columbus is orchestrating a Friday Station of the Cross-by the Knights for the parish. Make spirituality our key focus: Council supports Men s Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) both monetarily and with labor during the retreat. We are conducting the aforementioned Stations of the Cross, weekly rosary devotion, Honor Guard Duties for special masses, spiritual education material during celebrity breakfast and several duties during both daily and Sunday mass are performed by council Knights. I am going to add a sixth category to this Supreme list. We take care of each other. We are all faced with crosses in life. Some are heavier than others and if a Brother Knight s cross is too heavy a burden then his fellow Knights will help him carry the load. Vivat Jesu, Jim Cunningham GK Council

5 FROM OUR CHAPLAIN... FATHER FREDDY People as our top priority for God There are a number of examples in the Scripture that tell us how Biblical Leaders made people as their priority. The Book of Esther tells us about a beautiful Jewish maiden who became Queen of Persia and how her people became a top priority for her. She says, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. If I perish, I perish. (Esther 4:16) When Moses went to the king Pharaoh and asked him to set his people free, he made his people, the top priority of his life. St. Paul, the most brilliant apostle of the New Testament, made people his top priority. St. Paul writing to the Corinthians, says, For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God s law but am under Christ s law) so that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. (1 Cor 9: 19-23) Be it Esther, Moses, St. Paul, every leader in the scripture had a single priority, namely, people as priority. They knew they had to make people their priority because the God they worshipped made people His priority. The biblical leaders did not have any hidden agenda to promote themselves or promote their interests or promote any business institutions. They did not make use of people to further their interests. They had one agenda, namely, people as priority for God. That s why Jesus said, I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. (John 10;10). The greatest achievement of Jesus is His people. Every leader would follow this pattern of life established by Jesus who shed His last drop of blood and water for the sake His people. Every member in the Knights of Columbus is a Scriptural leader in essence who makes people his priority. We make this choice not because we are driven by social ideology or political interests or institutional or business motifs. We make this choice so that the purpose of God may be fulfilled in our land. God bless 5

7 FROM OUR LECTURER... Meditation: Isaiah 58:1- View NAB Reading at USCCB.org Subscriber? Login to view archives Friday after Ash Wednesday This, rather, is the fasting that I wish. (Isaiah 58:6) What are you doing for Lent? It s a question you ve probably been asked more than once this week. Many of us will answer with something like, I m giving up desserts or chocolate or alcohol and going to Stations of the Cross on Fridays. And we should. Giving up things for Lent helps us refocus our attention on the Lord. But there s another side to fasting that has to do with the way we relate to the people around us. Today s first reading shows us what this can look like. In the reading, Isaiah makes it clear that the fasting God wants is to see yokes untied, bread shared with the hungry, and the homeless sheltered. He doesn t want us to turn our back on anyone. How is this kind of social awareness linked to fasting? Because denying ourselves something simple like dessert can help us become less attached to our own comfort and pleasure. And that kind of detachment can open our eyes to the needs of other people. It can also bring us to the point where we can put aside our comfort for the sake of reaching out to our brothers and sisters in need. But there s more to fasting than giving up sweets. We can also fast from what we want to do. We can fast from those things we think we have a right to, like our free time. That kind of fast can free us up to join a group that makes sandwiches and gives them out to the hungry in a local park. Or if we give up our right to keep extra clothing, we could clear out our closet and send some good clothes not just the old or outgrown ones to people devastated by a natural disaster. God is inviting you to learn more of his ways during Lent. So yes, deny your normal appetites and press in to know him more. Go without some treat or spend more time in prayer. But also extend yourself toward other people. Let the Lord use your fasting to free you up to serve. Your Lenten fast will start to find its expression in concrete, everyday actions that touch people around you. Father, help me to fast the way you want me to. Help me to bring your love to the people around me. Psalm 51:3-6, Matthew 9:
