Their family attends, participates in, and assists with numerous functions for our organization and our parish, as well as other organizations. Congratulations are in order, as well, for two ever helpful and involved Brother Knights also: Greg Lombard, Knight of the Year; and the Knight of the Month, Dave Natishak. Thank you to all who attended our yearly banquet. It was a very enjoyable evening and it was a pleasure to have many Knights, widows of Knights and all the spouses/guests together to celebrate! I cannot thank all of the volunteers for all the work you do for the good of the Order! A big shoutout to the bingo workers who regularly sacrifice their Tuesday evenings to insure that the game continues, as it is a needed and ongoing means Continued Page 4

4 GK Report Continued - of raising funds for the multitude of charities to which we contribute. Again, I cannot thank each and every one of you for all you do! Many hands make light work and without you we would not be able to do many of the great things we do in the name of our Lord! Brother John Ryan and I delivered the coats to Peru elementary school for the Coats for Kids program on Monday, the 5th of November. They were very grateful to receive them once again this year. This is a great benefit for the children and I am sure they will go to good use. Speaking of children, we will be assisting with the Kids Day Out (KDO) event and will be sponsoring our yearly Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest. We re looking for someone to take charge and lead the contest, so if you are available and able to do so please contact me. If anyone can contribute time towards aiding with KDO, the help would be gladly accepted. It is scheduled for the16th of December from 12 noon to 3:00 pm. We will also be coordinating our workers for the spaghetti dinners, which will be starting up again in January. If you are interested in working one or more of the dinners, please contact me at or me at KKemp1487@gmail.com. Let me know what you would like to do to help. If you have time and you are available to help out with our Bingo, pulltabs or any of our other events please step forward. We would love to have you there - all are welcome! May God bless you all! Annual Mass for Deceased Members Our council s annual Mass for deceased members will be said on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. We will pray for the 79 knights who have passed away since our founding in 1979 including the five members who passed away since last November: Roger Long, Henry Jarvis, Lynn Wilke, John O Donnell and Bob Santor. Please make every effort to attend. An Important Message from our Financial Secretary Gordon Burdo Our council is in the process of updating our membership records. It is important for us to have current phone numbers, mail and addresses to send out important announcements, membership cards and The Apple Tree. We are asking all knights who have changed their address, mailing address or phone number to send updated information to Gordy Burdo at his address: burdogj@plattsburgh.edu or call Your Chance For Meaningful Hour An Adoration volunteer is needed from 10 to 11 a.m. during the winter months. Substitutes are also needed. Each Friday between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. parishioners take one hour to adore the Blessed Sacrament in our parish chapel. It s an hour of peace and grace. Many people say that hour is the best hour of the week. Please call Adoration Coordinator Linda Patnode at if you have the time to volunteer. You will never regret it. Ecumenical Choir Support As we have for many years our council will prepare and serve refreshments to be enjoyed by the Keeseville-Peru Ecumenical Chair the audience following the annual concert. The St. Augustine s Concert is scheduled for Saturday, December 15th at 7 p.m. Help will be needed after the 4:30 Mass to remove the chapel furniture and after the concert to return the furniture to the chapel. Remember in Your Prayers John Soulia, Jim McCarty, Carolyn Shipman Singing is Good For Everyone Lecturer James Bosley Member suggested subject - Maybe we should sing in church more? I sing in church, that is, most of the time. I privately like to sing, so it isn t that hard to convince me to do it; as long as I m either alone or there are enough other people singing that I can pretend that other people can t hear me anyway. So if for no other reason, if you also sing in church you are helping me to feel more comfortable. So thank you for that. The Bible encourages us to sing. It isn t hard to find Bible verses about that. Here are a couple: 1 Chronicles 16:9 says Sing praise, play music; proclaim all His wondrous deeds. Psalm 30:5 says Sing praise to the Lord, you faithful; give thanks to His holy memory. Some people take the position that the singing should be done by the choir exclusively, and not by the rest of us. What is the official position of the Church? For that of course we go to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Paragraph 1156 says: The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as a combination of sacred music and words, it forms a necessary or integral part of solemn liturgy. The composition and singing of inspired psalms, often accompanied by musical instruments, were already closely linked to the liturgical celebrations of the Old Covenant. The Church continues and develops this tradition: Address one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart. [apparently Ephesians 5:19] He who sings prays twice. The best argument I can make for the rest of us to sing in church, and not just the choir, comes from a Vatican II document titled Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium which was

promulgated by Pope Paul VI on December 4 th, 1963. This document calls for the full and active participation by all the people in the sacred liturgy.

Thank you to everyone who fully and actively participates in the Mass, and hopefully if any of you have not been singing in church, maybe you will consider starting. I promise you that nobody will give you a hard time if you sing poorly. Chances are, you are not as bad as you think you are anyway.
