2 Church Land Use Many of you may not know that when the property was purchased to build the church that we now occupy, additional land was included in that purchase. There are three vacant and wooded lots up the hill well behind the community garden. The total acreage is 6.19 acres so each lot is just over 2 acres. This land is zoned in the Allyn Urban Growth Area (UGA) for multi-use dwellings/facilities. There are other vacant lots in that vicinity as well. There is a dirt road that accesses our lots and it is located right before entering the church grounds. Recently, I was contacted by a real estate agent who had a client that wanted to purchase land on the hill which belongs to others. The person interested in buying the property would like an easement from us which, at this time, is a twenty foot wide Mason County access strip of land. This twenty foot strip of land still belongs to us (the Diocese), and we (the Diocese) would have to grant the interested party an easement to build an access road to the property he is interested in. I met with the agent and we walked the property together so the agent could assess the slope and other pertinent factors. Continued on Page 3 A great big THANK YOU to all those that worked so hard on the patio sale. Your help during the work week and day of sale was much appreciated. So many or you made this year's Patio Sale possible ~ beginning by moving and stacking chairs on Sunday ~ setting up tents and tables ~ others opened boxes of donated items, sifted through ~ to make sure they were nice and clean, then set up table displays ~ then there was the pricing...so many tasks to do and carry through... how about all those bakers ~ busy on our day off Friday, baking up a storm ~TOGETHER we all got 'er done!! We are thankful blessed to have so many wonderful people at St Hugh's to make this Patio Sale event happen ~ thank you again for your support. A big thank you to Lois as well for all her hard work I believe God put us here for many reasons one is to make this a better place to live and the proceeds from the patio sale do that this congregation lives that reason and it was my pleasure to work with the special people thank you for that. Lois Sweany & Marlene Eden 2
3 Church Land Use Continued While St. Hugh purchased the property and we pay the taxes, the property belongs to the Diocese. Therefore, anything we would do with the property must have Diocesan involvement but also approved by the St. Hugh congregation. And, of course, before we would consider any action we would want to have a congregational meeting to discuss pros and cons, options, and develop a decision that involves the input of you all. I have contacted Dennis Tierney, who is the Diocesan representative who would become involved in any decisions of this sort and have asked him to meet with us. He will attend our worship service either September 9 th, or 16 th. He will most likely meet with the Bishop s Committee before the service, and then meet with the whole congregation after the service. At that time you can ask any questions or concerns about the possible sale of this property. He will also include his input as to what the possibilities are concerning any revenue generated from a possible sale. Again, we, as the St. Hugh congregation have the final decision to make concerning this property. We can choose to keep the property if we want and still grant an easement with the stipulation that we would not contribute any funding for the construction or maintenance of this easement. By the time this is published in the News and Views, we will inform all as to the date of Dennis Tierney s visit. A Holy Waste of Time ~ Young Adult Retreat Young adults (ages 18-35) from around the Diocese of Olympia are invited to this annual weekend of fun, friendship and faith at a gorgeous rustic lodge situated right on the Hood Canal and with a view of the Olympic Mountains just beyond. 6 A Beautiful Day for a House Blessing On Sunday, 22 July following the worship service at St. Hugh a group of well-wishers drove south to near Shelton to celebrate with Karen Moore and her lovely daughters, the blessing of her newly renovated home. Karen purchased this home after selling her house in Lakeland Village and began making plans for the upgrading of all the interior spaces. The sun was shining; the bay, her front yard, was tranquil and it was a perfect day to bless a new dwelling. Karen is an accomplished artist and her artistic flair was evident in this lovely open and inviting living space. We stood on her deck, done in several tiers, and beautifully decorated, and looked out on the beauty of Oakland Bay. It was in this awesome setting that we blessed Karen and the home she transformed into what felt like a peaceful sanctuary. Following the house blessing, Karen served a lovely meal and those that were able to attend this event were treated to a very pleasant experience. Thank you Karen for your hospitality in opening your home to us, the fabulous meal, and for the many ways you use your creative gifts. Faithfully, Vicki+ Batter up! Baseball with the Bishop!!
