2 From The Deputy Principal Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday was celebrated with a Mass for Year 3 7 children and a Liturgy for Reception Year 2 children. This day is the beginning of Lent. The children received ashes on their foreheads which remind us that Lent is a time of letting go of things that stop us from being happy and at peace with others. It is also a time to reflect and journey with Jesus to the cross as Lent is a time of preparation for the death of Christ on Good Friday and His Resurrection on Easter Sunday. 'So it is written that Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead' Luke 24: 46. The children participated in these events in a respectful and reverent way. Each year during Lent we are asked to care for the poor through Project Compassion. Your child has brought home a Project Compassion box recently. There is more information about Project Compassion on Page 3 of this newsletter. Sports Captains 2014 The role of Sport Captain and Vice Captain is another very important part of leadership at All Saints. These children received their badges at an assembly last Friday. Congratulations to the following children for being elected to lead their sporting team this year: WRENS Captains: Amy (7S) & David (7M) Vice Captains: Emily (7S) & Callum (7M) LORIKEETS Captains: Lily (7M) & Adi (7S) Vice Captains: Cheyenne (7S) & Tyler (7S) ROSELLAS Captains: Katelin (7S) & Andre (7S) Vice Captains: Rebecca (7S) & Brodie (7S) CORELLAS Captains: Chloe (7S) & Nathan (7M) Vice Captains: Bridgette (7M) & Sophie (7S) We look forward to Sports Day and to the other activities that the Sport Captains and Vice Captains will be involved in throughout the year. Clean up Australia Day All Saints took part in the National Clean Up Australia Day on Friday, February 28. We all met in the courtyard and then cleaned up our designated areas in and around the school. The children collected many bags of rubbish, although less than in previous years, particularly around the local surrounding areas. Children, staff and families all joined in to help make our environment a cleaner place. Many children were surprised about what they were finding and the amount of rubbish collected from the community areas. These bags of rubbish may have made their way to the sea. Well done everyone and thank you to Alison Olsder who once again successfully coordinated this day. Out of School Hours Sport Policy Please access the draft copy of the Out of School Hours Sport policy. The changes in the policy are in bold print. Please take note of the roles of coaches, parent/carers, children and spectators. If you have feedback please it to info@allsaints.catholic.edu.au by Tuesday, 18 March. Soccer 2014 Thank you to all the children who have returned their forms to play soccer at All Saints in Teams are being formed and filling very quickly. However, we have 35 U6 players and only 2 coaches. We cannot form teams without coaches and we desperately need at least 3 more U6 coaches if we are to form teams for these children. We are also looking for more Year 7 children to fill the senior teams. Thanks to those parents/carers who have offered to coach teams this year. We will be holding an induction meeting for coaches towards the end of this term. We have also had a number of people offering to coordinate the running of the canteen this year. Thank you to those people. If your child would like to play and you haven't filled out the forms please access them from the website or from the front office by Thursday, 20 March. Pupil Free Day The Southern Vales Catholic Schools are gathering tomorrow for our Pupil Free Day with Professor Paul Clarke. Our focus will be Developing Communities of Sustainable Practice. Professor Clarke leads the UK based and globally active Pop up Foundation which helps schools and communities integrate local practice and global action for sustainability. Safety Alert Children and families are reminded to be wary of approaches from strangers, especially when they are unaccompanied or travelling to and from school. If they are approached, children should not respond and should not accept offers of rides or gifts. Children should seek the assistance of other nearby adults if they feel unsafe and should report the event to a trusted adult (parent/carer or school staff member) as soon as possible. SAPOL advises that taking out a mobile phone and calling police can deter the offender and they recommend the child making a formal report at their closest police station. 2 Helen Thompson, Deputy Principal
3 RE News Shrove Tuesday Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent, which is a time when people traditionally fasted. Families would have a feast on Shrove Tuesday. It was a time for people to eat all the luxury food so good food was not wasted. Shrove Tuesday at All Saints was once again commemorated with the Parents and Friends (P&F) cooking pancakes for over 500 children and staff members. We would like to thank the P&F for volunteering their time and energy, cooking delicious pancakes for us to all enjoy. Lent Lent is the Churches Liturgical Season of preparation for Easter. It began on Ash Wednesday and will end on Easter Saturday, lasting for 40 days (not including Sundays). We prepare for Easter by fasting and practising spiritual disciplines during this time to reflect on His sacrifices. Lent is a time for spring cleaning our lives while giving thanks to God and strengthening our relationship with Him. Father Fred reminded the children in his Homily on Ash Wednesday of three important aspects of Lent; to pray, to have an open and giving heart just like Jesus and finally to think of the poor and give money through the Project Compassion boxes. Project Compassion Jesus brought the promise of hope for all people so that we may Have life and have it to the full. John 10:10. We give thanks for the blessings in our own lives for the gifts of good food, a safe home, clean water, education and healthcare. We are called to work for a just and fair world for all people. By supporting Caritas Australia s Project Compassion we share in Jesus call to give hope to others so that they may also have life to the full. Take up the challenge live YOUR life to the full. Take action for justice so that others may also share what you enjoy. The children have received a Project Compassion box to take home in order to donate, and help those in need and open your hearts to those less fortunate than yourselves. Harmony Day The message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs. It is a day to celebrate Australia s diversity. It is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and make it a better place. Harmony Day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. All Saints will celebrate Harmony Day on 20 March beginning with a Liturgy in the hall at 9:15am, please come along and join us. The children will then have an opportunity to create a Harmony Day biscuit in the quadrangle for $1.00 and all proceeds will go to Project Compassion. Classes will then participate in a variety of learning experiences exploring important lessons of respect and understanding of cultural diversity. Church Etiquette When you enter a Mass or Liturgy remember you have entered a sacred space for the purpose of prayer, adoration, reflection or to celebrate a sacrament. It is a time to show respect for this space by ensuring that: Your phone is switched off You enter without food or coffee Sit quietly and reflect Toddlers remain supervised Kate Turner Acting APRIM God of hope and compassion, You remind us of the need to care for people throughout the world. We pray that during this time of Lent, We will make a home in our own hearts for the poor. May we listen and act on your call to end poverty, social justice and make every person feel special. Amen 3

In Italian we have been busy learning about the history, the characters and the various celebrations of Carnevale. Carnevale (a word coming from the combination of carne [meat] and levare [to take away]) was created as a means of allowing people to indulge in meat and other festive treats and activities before entering the solemn Lent period of 40 days of self-restraint. Although the period of Carnevale takes place over a number of days, Martedi Grasso (Fat Tuesday), or Shrove Tuesday as we know it, and the weekend prior are when the festival s major celebrations take place. With the different classes we have taken a particular interest in three of Italy s most popular Carnevale celebrations: Venezia s masked parade, the pageant of extravagant floats that takes place in Viareggio and the Northern city of Ivrea s Battaglia delle Arance (Battle of the Oranges). With the Year 7 children we have also taken some time to create personal profiles to describe our appearances, personalities and interests. In creating these profiles we have been learning a range of adjectives to describe ourselves and our peers. Grazie come al solito (thanks as always) Il Signor Vaudo e La Signora Pardoe.
