Answer: One of the most important principles of Catholic social teaching is the dignity of work and the rights of workers. Four encyclicals address this foundational social teaching: Rerum Novarum (1891) by Leo XIII, Quadragesimo Anno (1931) by Pius XI, Laborem Exercens (1981), and Centesimus Annus (1991) by John Paul II. They address both the theology and dignity of work. In Genesis, God takes the initiative in creating the world, calling forth human beings to be faithful stewards of creation. We are thus formed to share in God s continuing creative activity by partnering with God in finishing the world and helping bring it to completion and fulfillment. From this perspective, work can be spiritually understood in terms of sharing in God s ongoing activity to build, create, and transform the world. Human beings are co-creators with God. This vocation demands self-discipline. Besides an exercise in self-discipline, work is also the means by which we develop and fulfill ourselves. In work, we shape the world and our environment. Through work, we also shape ourselves. Pope John Paul II summarized this point in Laborem Exercens #6, "the value of work is not primarily the kind of work being done, but the fact that the one who is doing it is a person." Labor Day offers an excellent opportunity to reflect on how we view work in light of our Catholic social teaching. Liturgical Publications, Inc. 3 Phase II Update During the next few weeks, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing will be addressed. As a result, it will appear that nothing is being done! After this is done, work will begin on the interior walls. Our next focus will be on design for the stained glass window design for the large windows in the day chapel. 5 ST. TERESA OF CALCuTTA Feast Day: September 5 Canonized: September 4, 2016 On August 26, 1910, Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia. As a young girl she was very involved in parish activities, and her mother told her many stories of missionaries, who inspired her greatly. In 1928, at age 18, Agnes joined the missionary order of the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin, Ireland. There she was given the name Sister Mary Teresa. As a young Sister in 1929 she traveled to Calcutta (today known as Kolkata), India, to teach at a school for girls. She continued to teach at various schools in India for 20 years. During that time, she was deeply moved by the number of sick and dying people on the streets. On September 10, 1946, while traveling by train to Darjeeling, Sister Mary Teresa experienced a call within a call. She felt called to be God s love in action: to serve the sick and dying, the hungry and homeless. She received permission to leave the Loreto convent. Then she sought medical training and became determined to serve the poorest of the poor. Eventually, she was joined by other women. Some of these women were her former students, and they helped her serve the poor. In 1950 she established an order of religious women called the Missionaries of Charity. Over time the Missionaries of Charity have built centers throughout the world. In 1979 Mother Teresa, as she was known by then, received the Nobel Peace Prize. She captivated the world as few other people have. Her simple message was: We are put on earth to do something beautiful for God. Pope John Paul II chose October 19, 2003, as the date for the beatification of Mother Teresa. The ceremony was a celebration for the entire world. Mother Teresa s life of holiness is respected on a global scale. Her example of humble and loving service is admired by millions of people. The process that led to Mother s Teresa s beatification was the shortest in modern history. Ordinarily, the cause for beatification cannot begin until five year s after the candidate s death. However, Pope John Paul II advanced the cause of Mother Teresa soon after her death on September 5, The pope explained that he was making an exception because of widespread admiration for the tiny nun. Mother Teresa s spiritual vitality can be described with these words. Don t search for God in faraway lands. He is not there. He is close to you. He is with you. Just keep that lamp burning, and you will always see him. Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love. 7 Letter of the Holy Father Francis to the People of God If one member suffers, all suffer together with it (1 Cor 12:26). These words of Saint Paul forcefully echo in my heart as I acknowledge once more the suffering endured by many minors due to sexual abuse, the abuse of power and the abuse of conscience perpetrated by a significant number of clerics and consecrated persons. Crimes that inflict deep wounds of pain and powerlessness, primarily among the victims, but also in their family members and in the larger community of believers and nonbelievers alike. Looking back to the past, no effort to beg pardon and to seek to repair the harm done will ever be sufficient. Looking ahead to the future, no effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated. The pain of the victims and their families is also our pain, and so it is urgent that we once more reaffirm our commitment to ensure the protection of minors and of vulnerable adults. 1. If one member suffers In recent days, a report was made public which detailed the experiences of at least a thousand survivors, victims of sexual abuse, the abuse of power and of conscience at the hands of priests over a period of approximately seventy years. Even though it can be said that most of these cases belong to the past, nonetheless as time goes on we have come to know the pain of many of the victims. We have realized that these wounds never disappear and that they require us forcefully to condemn these atrocities and join forces in uprooting this culture of death; these wounds never go away. The heart-wrenching pain of these victims, which cries out to heaven, was long ignored, kept quiet or silenced. But their outcry was more powerful than all the measures meant to silence it, or sought even to resolve it by decisions that increased its gravity by falling into complicity. The Lord heard that cry and once again showed us on which side He stands. Mary s song is not mistaken and continues quietly to echo throughout history. For the Lord remembers the promise He made to our fathers: He has scattered the proud in their conceit; He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up the lowly; He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty (Lk 1:51-53). We feel shame when we realize that our style of life has denied, and continues to deny, the words we recite.
