2 June 4, 2017 Page 2 #566 Reflections First Reading: Acts 2:1-11 Luke uses this dramatic episode of the Holy Spirit s arrival and its effects on the multi-national group of Jews visiting Jerusalem to mark the birthday of the Church. Second Reading: I Corinthians 12:3b-7,12-13 Paul discerned a competitive tendency among the Corinthians over the rank of one s spiritual gifts. For unity s sake, Paul reminds them that each gift has a value for the community, and all come from the same God. Gospel: John 20:19-23 The risen Lord suddenly appears to the frightened disciples and brings them His peace. Jesus also gives them the awesome power to forgive or retain sins. What s going on at St. William the Abbot School of Religion Registration will be held on Tuesday, June 27th from 4:30 to 6:30PM, Wednesday, June 28th from 7:00 to 9:00PM, and Thursday, June 29th from 5:00 to 7:00PM. The Registration fee will be $200 for the first child, $130 for the second child in the same family, $100 for the third and $45 for the fourth. The Sacrament Fee for grades 2, 7 and 8 will be $50. We will not be taking any registrations after June 30th. We now have $34,000 donated for the new roof. We still need $16,000 more. Please donate today to help us get the roof. Thank you to all who have already donated. The Solemnity for St. William the Abbot is on June 25th. We will be having our 2nd Annual Pot Luck Dinner on Saturday, June 24th, at 6PM, and Hospitality Sunday on June 25th after all Masses. Please RSVP for the dinner and let us know what dish you will be bringing.

4 June 4, 2017 Page 4 #566 Saint Ephraim Feast Day June 9 Although Ephraim s father was a pagan priest in Syria, he was raised as a Christian by his devout mother. He studied all aspects of the Christian faith, as well as philosophy, but his talent in writing and music was most apparent. Ephraim s teacher and friend, Bishop Iakovas, tonsured him a monk and ordained him as a deacon. Ephraim became director of a theological school in Syria, and he earned a worldwide reputation as a teacher, lecturer, writer, and hymnographer. During the time of the persecution of Christians, Ephraim took refuge in a community in Edessa. He spent most of his time living in a cave, writing praises to God in the form of hymns and prayers. Because of the beautiful quality of his hymns, the people there referred to him as The Lyre of the Holy Spirit. The lyre is a musical instrument whose sound resembles the harp melodious and angelic. As well as writing sacred music, Ephraim spent time creating an organization to help the victims of famine, a great problem in those times. Ephraim was one of the most gifted contributors to prayer and hymnography in the history of the church. Many of his hymns and prayers are still used in Orthodox churches today. In 1920, Pope Benedict XV decreed that St. Ephraim the Syrian be listed among the Fathers of the Church for his great accomplishments. St. Ephraim is the patron of spiritual leaders and spiritual directors. What is Pentecost? After Easter Sunday, Christmas is the second-greatest feast in the Christian liturgical calendar, but Pentecost Sunday is not far behind. Coming 50 days after Easter and ten days after the Ascension of Our Lord, Pentecost marks the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. For that reason, it is often called the birthday of the Church. Pentecost Sunday is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, celebrated early enough to be mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (20:16) and St. Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians (16:8). Pentecost is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter (if we count both Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday), and it supplants the Jewish feast of Pentecost, which took place 50 days after the Passover and celebrated the sealing of the Old Covenant on Mount Sinai. On Pentecost Sunday, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, they were granted the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Those gifts helped them to fulfill their mission to preach the Gospel to all nations. For us, too, those gifts granted when we are infused with sanctifying grace, the life of God in our souls help us to live a Christian life. Between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday, the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary spent nine days in prayer, waiting for the fulfillment of Christ s promise to send His Spirit. We will be having vacation bible school again this year. It will start on Monday, August 7th and end on Friday, August 11th. Everyday will be 9:00AM to 12:30PM. You can register on Sundays after the 10:15 Mass starting on June 4th. You must be in grade 1-5 to attend. The last day to register is July 21st. The cost will be $35. The Knights of Columbus is an organization of Catholic men and their families that derive a great sense of satisfaction from being able to develop lasting friendships with each other while helping the less fortunate. Every day the K of C provides its members with the opportunity to discover the importance of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism to our country and the world. VBS at St. Veronica The theme of this year s Vacation Bible School is Marvelous Mystery: The Mass Comes Alive. Come and join us for a week of games, skits, crafts, music and lessons as we discover more about the marvelous gift of the Mass and Holy Eucharist. It will be held on Monday, July 10th, through Friday, July 14th, from 9AM to 12:30PM. Children ages 4-5 (fully potty trained) and children entering grades 1 6 are welcome to attend. The cost is $40 per child ($150 maximum per family). The price includes t-shirt and snacks. Registration forms are available at the rectory and the CCD office. Registration deadline is June 3. A 4x8 brick is $75 and a 8x8 brick is $100. It is a great way to remember a special event or a person. Order forms are in the rack in the foyer by the table. It is with great happiness that we announce our newest parishioner who has joined our Parish Family through the Sacrament of Baptism: Parker Anthony Bozicevic child of Michael Bozicevic and Melissa Jensen Catholic Women of Zion Chapter 1 Retreat Day at Holy Family Church The day consists of Mass, prayer, music, speaker, sharing, networking and prayers for healing. This month s speaker is Dr. Adriane Gullotta-Gsell, a licensed Psychologist who utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy and Christian counseling in her Red Bank practice. She is a Third Order Carmelite Lay Religious and a Commissioned Lay Ecclesial Minister with an MA in Theology. She is also on the Advisory Board for Catholic Women of Zion. Come join her as she shares: Open the Eyes of Our Hearts, Lord! It is on Saturday, June 10th, from 8:00AM to 12:00. Admission is $20, which includes lunch. Reservations are necessary.
