3 December 30, 2018 Page 2 #566 Reflections First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6,12-14 Authentic religion involves responsibilities to others, especially one s parents. Honoring one s father and mother brings a person long life, forgiveness of sins and other blessings. Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21 Paul urges his readers to adopt a type of laundry list of virtues which certainly apply to family members. The applications of them guarantees the peace of Christ will control our hearts. Gospel: Matthew 2:13-15,19-23 Here Jesus is to be seen as the personification of a new Israel in His escape from Egypt via Joseph and Mary. Outstanding throughout the narrative is Joseph s trusting obedience to God. A special thank you to Denise O Beirne for making all the beautiful soldiers, the paper mache lights, Santa s conveyor belt and stain glass windows, to Matuez Wolek for building the outside igloo out of gallon milk jugs, to Jen DeJesus, Amy Klugewicz, and Eileen Sosa for putting on a wonderful Christmas pageant and to all their wonderful students that participated in the play, to the Saxology Band from Howell High School, Michael Cappetto and Daisy Grant for performing, to Anthony Sr., and Anthony Jr., for the music and announcing, and to all the parishioners that donated to our bake sales and to our milk jugs. Please bring health, healing and hope to those in our community who are sick especially Francesca Tortora, Jonathon Capriotti, Emily Capriotti, Dakota Schick, Marianne McVeigh, Don Goletz, we also ask you Lord, to watch over all those with incurable autoimmune diseases and for all those who are afflicted with MS, CF, Lou Gehrig s disease, for those who suffer from Alzheimer disease, dementia, addictions, and their families. God of all consolation, give life and health to our sisters and brothers for whom we pray in your Holy Name. Amen. Blessed Mary Remembering Memory is a compelling gift. It has the power to help us grow, to bond us together and to encourage us in difficult times. But memory can also be a negative influence. It can engender fear or nurture revenge. What makes the difference? It all depends on what we choose to remember. In the gospels we are told several times that Mary reflected on or pondered the happenings in her life. Like us, she needed time to see the meaning or patterns in her life. Like us, Mary needed time to discern God s will which is not always obvious. Mary remembered things...prayerfully. The beginning of a new year is a good time to ask; what memories do I choose to keep in my heart? What lessons do I learn from them? Mary, Holy Mother of God, help me to reflect on the happenings in my life that I may see God s love and will, more clearly. -Sr. Melannie Svoboda, S.N.D. It is celebrated by the Catholic Church on January 1st, the Octave (8th) day of the Christmas season. For Roman Catholics, this day is designated as a Holy Day of Obligation. Calling Mary Mother of God is the highest honor we can give to her. Just as Christmas honors Jesus as the Prince of Peace the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God honors Mary as the Queen of Peace. New Year s Day is also designated as the World Day of Peace, further acknowledging the role of Mary in our hearts and in our world. Our Mass schedule is Monday, December 31st, at 5:00PM and Tuesday, January 1st, at 10:00AM. of all our Parish family and friends, and for aborted babies and those men and women who died this week in the Service of our Country. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. The Sanctuary Lamp is lit this week in memory of Mildred Gilbert, requested by the Gilbert Family. A New Years Prayer Another Year is dawning With the chance to start anew May you be kinder, wiser In all you say and do Not so caught up in selfish gain That you would fail to see The things in life that mean the most Cost not a fancy fee The warm kind word that you can give The outstretched hand to help The prayers you pray for those in need More precious these than wealth You know not what may be ahead Of laughter or of tears You only need to know each day That our Lord is walking near You should be thankful for this brand new year As now you humbly pray Your hand secure in our dear Lord Each step along the way. Amen Happiness keeps you sweet. Trials keep you strong. Sorrows keep you human. Failures keep you humble. Success keeps you glowing. But only FAITH keeps you going!

5 December 30, 2018 Page 4 #566 Saint Genevieve Feast Day January 3 Patroness of Paris Genevieve was born near Paris. She was seven years old when Bishop Germanus of Auxerre came to her on his way to Great Britain to combat the heresy of Pelagius. When he blessed young Genevieve, she vowed to dedicate herself to Jesus Christ. At the age of fifteen, Genevieve took the veil and began her life of service. After the death of her parents, Genevieve moved to Paris when the young nun had visions. These visions alienated some of those around her and critics called Genevieve a fraud. Bishop Germanus however, reaffirmed his faith in her spirituality and his support helped silence the accusations. Genevieve s acts of charity won the faith of many and soon most people believed her visions to be true signs from God. Attila the Hun and his troops threatened Paris. She told the citizens of Paris that their faith could hold off the Huns. She instructed the Parisians to fast and pray, and the Attila forces turned away. Genevieve s service to Paris still was not over, when an epidemic swept through the city, residents paraded her relics through the streets and the intervention of Genevieve is said to have ended the plague. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Feast Day January 4 Patroness of the American School System Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American saint was born on August 28, 1774, in New York City as Elizabeth Ann Bayley. Brought up as an Episcopalian she married William M. Seton, heir to a wealthy family, at the age of nineteen. With her sister-in-law Rebecca she went on missions of mercy to help the poor widows and children of New York. When her husband contracted tuberculosis, the couple sailed for Italy so he could recuperate. Months later in Pisa, her husband died. She believed that the tragedies set before her would one day lead to some good. While in Italy, Elizabeth was taken in by her husband s friends and introduced to Catholicism. Upon returning to New York she joined the Catholic Church. Looking toward a new future, Elizabeth moved to Maryland where she entered a convent. Later she was made Superior to the newly established Daughters of Charity of St. Joseph, the first American religious society. Having been afforded an excellent education as a young girl, Elizabeth was qualified to train the Sisters to teach and even wrote many of the textbooks herself. For the remaining years of her life, Mother Seton, as she was called, worked tirelessly to establish orphanages and hospitals for the poor, sick and homeless. She died on January 4, Through their love of Christ, Elizabeth and the Sisters brought education to the poor and set the groundwork for the parochial school system in the United States. Elizabeth Ann Seton was canonized on September 14, 1975, by Pope Paul VI.
