3 3 THE RECTOR WRITES We are now in the midst of Lent and are, thus, being reminded pretty regularly that each of us is but dust. Our Creation story tells us that God fashioned Adam out of the dust of the earth. Physicists will tell us that about 40% of the atoms in our bodies (everything but the hydrogen atoms) come from stardust. Both the theological truth and the scientific truth suggest our impermanence. We return to the dust of the earth. We're buried and we decay and eventually nobody will be left to remember us. The stardust of which we are made will eventually break apart into subatomic particles or freeze as the universe expands or suffer heat death when the universe reaches maximum entropy or face some other nasty sounding fate. In short, all that we are and all that we have is temporary. This may sound pretty bleak. That's probably why, as I've said before, our culture is in death denial - sterilizing death and shielding us from its imminence. I think there's Good News here, though. We do believe in an afterlife, after all, but I think there's something more immediately helpful about realizing our mortality. Namely, it helps us put our lives into perspective and to live them more fruitfully and joyously. I used to get pretty anxious relatively regularly, and occasionally I still go through periods in which I'm more susceptible to anxiety than is normal. Believe me, it's not easy for anybody to admit this, but especially for a priest, who is expected to be a nonanxious presence in his or her community. While a number of approaches have helped me cope with this reality about myself, the recognition of my own mortality the fact that I'm only going to be around for so long has helped, too. It has helped me realize that God has given me an indeterminate but finite amount of time to love and be loved, to serve and be served, to live and to enrich the lives of others. Letting little problems cause inordinate stress and caring too much about what others think of me militates against making the best of the time God has given me to enjoy the life God has given me and care for the people God has brought into my life. I hope the reminder of mortality we all received on Ash Wednesday and continue to focus on during this season will help put things into perspective for you, too. There is so little time and so much to do that we do ourselves, each other, and God a disservice if we get all wrapped up in unimportant stuff. I leave you with the words of the Swiss philosopher Henri-Frédéric Amiel which have meant a great deal to me: Life is short and we have never too much time for gladdening the hearts of those who are traveling the dark journey with us. Oh, be swift to love, make haste to be kind! Yours in service to the Gospel, John

7 7 A PRAYER FOR MARCH Heavenly Father, help me to be steadfast and persistent in my prayers. I know that you love to hear the prayers of your children and that when I pray shamelessly to you, you will answer me. Amen. Music Notes We are working on new music for the Holy Week and Easter and could use even more singers. Please consider joining and thank you for your continued support of this ministry. Parker THE MYSTERY OF THE DISAPPEARING DISHTOWELS Do you have any gently used kitchen towels you might donate to restock the kitchen supply? We go through many towels - sometimes taken to be washed, used to clean the kitchen or pick up floor spills and pitched, etc. Any that might find their way to the kitchen will be greatly appreciated. DIRECTORY UPDATES There are copies of an update but in the short time since it came out, many changes and omissions have been noted. There are forms in the parish hall please update (or provide) your information. Thanks! TAIZÉ PRAYER Sunday, March 18 th is the next services of the season of Taizé Prayer at Trinity. Please join us at 5:00 p.m. for a service of prayer, song, and contemplation. This service has developed into an important outreach ministry for our parish to the community at large. Taizé Prayer is based on an ancient Christian principle expressed by Brother Roger, a founding member of the Taizé community in France: Nothing is more conducive to a communion with the living God than a meditative common prayer with, at its high point, singing that never ends and that continues in the silence of one s heart when one is alone again. The focal point of this communion is the cross the symbol of God s saving presence in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our season of Taizé Prayer runs from October through March, held the 3 rd Sunday of each month at 5:00pm. We can always use more help in setting up, decorating and clean up; musicians; and hosting or helping to host the reception which follows each service. If you would like to help in decorating, just join us after church as we setup on the 3 rd Sunday of the month. If you are a musician and want to join our ensemble, we meet at 3:45pm before the service to rehearse you are most welcome. If you wish to host a reception or help with same, there is a signup sheet on the bulletin board in the parish hall. If you have been with us in the past, we encourage you to come again; if you have never attended Taizé Prayer, please join us in March and give it a try we hope you will find the experience most worthwhile.
