2 2 OUTREACH GREETINGS. WE THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR KIND GENERIOSITY IN CONTRIBUTING TO OUR OUTREACH PROGRAMS. THE NEEDS DO CONTINUE FOOD, CLOTHES, SHOES, PERSONAL CARE ITEMS, ETC., ARE ALWAYS WELCOME. THE FIRST ORRGANIZATIONAL MEETING FOR THE BACK-YARD MISSION TRIP HAS BEEN HELD. MORE INFORMATION ON THIS YEAR S EVENT WILL BE FORTHCOMING. ALL YOUR CARING HELP IS SO GREATLY APPRECIATED. GOD BLESS AND THANK YOU AGAIN! NANCY AND PAUL O'SULLIVAN. TAIZÉ PRAYER by Kim Grove Sunday, February 21 st is our next Taizé Prayer service here at Trinity. Please join us at 5 p.m. for a service of prayer, song, and contemplation. This service has developed into an important outreach ministry for our parish to the community at large. Taizé Prayer is based on an ancient Christian principle expressed by Brother Roger, a founding member of the Taizé community in France: Nothing is more conducive to a communion with the living God than a meditative common prayer with, at its high point, singing that never ends and that continues in the silence of one s heart when one is alone again. The focal point of this communion is the cross - the symbol of God s saving presence in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our season of Taizé Prayer runs from October through April and is held the 3 rd Sunday of each month at 5 p.m. We can always use more help with setting up, decorating, and clean up; musicians; and hosting or helping to host the reception which follows each service. If you would like to help in decorating, just join us after church as we setup on the 3rd Sunday of the month. If you are a musician and want to join our ensemble, we meet at 3:45pm before the service to rehearse - you are most welcome. If you wish to host a reception or help with same, there is a signup sheet on the bulletin board in the parish hall. If you have been with us in the past, we encourage you to come again; if you have never attended Taizé Prayer, please join us on February 21 st and give it a try - we hope you will find the experience most worthwhile. You never know when you might meet CSG started 2016 by hosting a coffee hour where parishioners were challenged to guess who the person was behind the clue. Figuring out who went to a one-room school house for five years, who met Caroline Kennedy, and who drove a cement truck were just a few of the little known facts that stumped attendees.* CSG plans to host similar events in the future. Thanks to the Trudeau's for a delicious Parish Breakfast in January. February's will be on Saturday, February 13 (wonderful start to a Valentine's week end!). A green bag with a loaf of bread tucked inside has welcomed some visitors and newcomers this month (thanks Nancy Abbey). CSG's next meeting will be during Coffee Hour on Sunday, February 28. Given our mission (welcoming visitors and newcomers while sustaining current parishioners), it would seem a "fit" for everyone! Grab a cup of coffee and join us! *For those of you unable to come that Sunday, the clues fit, respectively, Nancy O'Sullivan, Gloria Wolph, and Ginny Lee. Ginny Lee Pilstl Christ in a stranger s guise
3 3 The following was printed as an open letter to Bishop Curry. Thanks to Mat Slater for bringing it to Trinity! Dear Presiding Bishop Curry, We, at St. Paul s Columbus, MS, watched the video you released the day after your installation. The one that called us to take to the streets, leave the walls that so often enclose us, and seek our congregation in the world. When we first viewed it, we conversed with excitement as to how the Episcopal Church was going to become evangelical under your leadership as primate of our church. However, a few weeks passed and we found ourselves still worshiping in our pews, carrying on within our church walls. Nothing changed. Apparently evangelism wasn t really coming to Columbus. The realization that YOU weren t coming to St. Paul s to lead us outside the church was a jolt. We concluded that if we truly believed in your message, WE would have to become the agents of evangelism within our community. So, together, we organized an event called Southside Evangelism. Our church is located in Southside Columbus. It is a historic, diverse neighborhood bordered by downtown, the Mississippi University for Women, and the Tombigbee Waterway. This neighborhood, our neighborhood, became our aim. Our goal was to simply remind them that we are neighbors, and we would like to get to know them. In the days leading up to the event we gathered, candied, and packaged pecans. We designed flyers advertising our Lessons & Carols and Christmas services. We strategized our route so that we could visit as many houses as possible. And we began talking about what it means to evangelize. Fear was the predominant word, primarily the fear of the unknown. What do I say to these people, What if they are mean to me, and Can I profess my faith in a way that others will understand. We talked about these feelings. On the day of the event, many of us undoubtedly regretted our decision. Our fears had returned, but we showed up anyway. We separated into groups of four to six, a few more than the disciples pair, and hesitantly began to knock. With each knock we gained a bit of confidence. Quite early on, we realized there were some in each group with a natural ability for evangelism. Imagine that, we Episcopalians have it in us! Those people quickly assumed a leadership role, teaching others how to fearlessly invite our neighbors to join us for worship. Eventually we settled into a groove. With more confidence our focus moved away from ourselves and towards our neighbors. We noticed hesitancy in people opening the door. Giving the pecans was often difficult; most people wanted to know how much they cost. As we told them the pecans were simply a gift from the church, their demeanor changed. First it was confusion, then shock, and finally the most basic Mississippi virtue, hospitality. Once people recognized our evangelism as hospitality, they, in turn, opened their doors. Many invited us in, wanting us to stay for coffee or tea. We offered hospitality and our neighbors reciprocated. We want to thank you, Presiding Bishop Curry, for this opportunity of evangelism. Your words of encouragement and leadership drew our church out of our comfort zone into a whole new experience. Where, by extending hospitality through evangelism, we received hospitality and so much more. We gained friends, neighbors, brothers and sisters in Christ, and we experienced the joy of invitation. Since that afternoon we have seen those friendly faces around town and yes, even in church. This is our beginning. We now know we can do it; St. Paul s has and will continue to evangelize. Grace and Peace, The People of St. Paul s Columbus, Mississippi

A PRAYER FOR FEBRUARY In this time of prayer may we bring into our circle of concern all those who, through our prayerful intentions, may be held by the inexplicable web of connection that links us together. May our love and prayers not be limited to ourselves or those near us, but extend to all our neighbors, both those we know and those we never will. May our prayers not be limited to words but express themselves in action. And may we continue to feel the tug of the web as we realize and hold tight our connections to one another.
