2 2 2 OUTREACH In addition to the typical daily needs of some of our neighbors, cool weather and the holidays will soon be here and those needs will grow. We continue to collect nonperishable foods, personal hygiene products, clothing, and laundry detergent for area agencies. Thank you for your continuing generosity. Rita Roberts and the Outreach Committee Christ in a Stranger s Guise You never know when you might meet Mark your calendars: Advent Wreath making returns! On Saturday, November 24 starting at 10 a.m., CSG is again sponsoring this event. Following completion of your wreath, pizza will be served! There is a sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall so we know how many supplies to get. Donations are appreciated. Thanks to Debi (Haas) and Lisa (Robeson) for hosting! Our second Shocktober Fest, held on 10/27, was filled with much laughter... and competition as attendees shared delicious food and drink and played a variety of games. Many interesting guests included a Scotsman in his kilt, a couple of "bikers", a curly, raven haired beauty (could have sworn she has a different hair style and color!) escorted by one who also incorporated tartans in his attire, an Allen East sports "groupie" and Little Red Riding Hood. A good time was had by all! CSG is once again sponsoring the sending of "good luck on finals" boxes to students away at college. These include Trinity's own plus any whom you want to receive treats at this time. Please sign up with name of person, address, and dates of finals. If you would like to provide a box, indicate that as well. When Christ in a Stranger's Guise first got started (over 20 years ago!), there was a need (then and now) to make sure visitors and newcomers were made to feel welcome. Hence, the beginning of greeters at the front and back doors. Over the years, as we continue to grow in welcoming, the need for two greeters has diminished. Beginning in November, the liturgical schedule will often reflect 3 folk assigned to "Usher/Greeter" duties: two to usher and greet at front door, one to greet at back. All that being said, it's up to all of us, not just the 3 or 4 given the assignment, to provide an atmosphere we all appreciate, never knowing when we might meet...christ in a Stranger's Guise. Ginny Lee Pilstl, Chair Christ in a stranger s guise.
3 3 THE RECTOR WRITES Here doth my memory overcome my genius; For on that cross as levin gleamed forth Christ, For that I cannot find ensample worthy But he who takes his cross and follows Christ Again will pardon me what I omit, Seeing in that Aurora lighten Christ. From horn to horn, and twixt top and base, Lights were in motion, brightly scintillating As they together met and passed each other; Thus level and aslant and swift and slow We here behold, renewing still the sight, The particles of bodies long and short. -Dante s Paradiso, Canto XIV Dante s vision of the saint s reward may well not be what we would have envisioned. His is a fascinating interpretation of the Apostle Paul s prayer in the Epistle to the Colossians (1:12): We give thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light. For Dante, that inheritance is crucifixion. The light is the Cross of Christ itself, and the saints have been made meet to hang upon that cross, particles of bodies long and short. This may strike us as a bit less than optimal, even a little gory, particularly if our vision of heaven takes the popular form: the big country club in the sky with an open bar, unlimited hors d œuvre and enough leisurely pastimes to keep one occupied for an eternity. But if our deepest desire is not merely for comfort, if we desire intimacy with God (which sounds like a rather uncomfortable proposition), then we might begin to understand what sainthood subsists in, and we might begin to grasp the greatness of its reward. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live, says Saint Paul (Galatians 2:20). The Christian life is paradox- it is both life and death, both crucifixion and resurrection, both the denial of agency and the freeing of the human will. As I ve said in sermons before bearing one s cross is not about putting up with an irritating co-worker or a gouty toe or any of the other nuisances we may experience from time to time. It is about truly dying to oneself, setting aside one s petty desires and even, perhaps, one s reasonable expectations for the sake of the kingdom. It is about dying to self that we might live for Christ and His people. The good news is that we and all the saints in light are made meet to become partakers of our inheritance. If it were up to us, we d never choose the way of the cross. We are enabled by an Other, not by our own goodness or cleverness. And when we do die to ourselves, when we go down the path toward the cross and sainthood, we realize that it is more blessing than bane, more pleasure than pain, for each step brings us closer to our Savior. Yours in service to the Gospel, John

8 8 TAIZÉ PRAYER by Kim Grove Sunday, November 18 th is the next Taizé Prayer here at Trinity. Please join us at 5:00 p.m. for a service of prayer, song, and contemplation. This service has developed into an important outreach ministry for our parish to the community at large. Taizé Prayer is based on an ancient Christian principle expressed by Brother Roger, a founding member of the Taizé community in France: Nothing is more conducive to a communion with the living God than a meditative common prayer with, at its high point, singing that never ends and that continues in the silence of one s heart when one is alone again. The focal point of this communion is the cross the symbol of God s saving presence in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Taizé Prayer is held the 3 rd Sunday of each month at 5:00 p.m. We can always use more help in setting up, decorating and clean up; musicians; and hosting or helping to host the reception which follows each service. If you would like to help in decorating, just join us after church as we set up on the 3 rd Sunday of the month. If you are a musician and want to join our ensemble, we meet at 3:45 p.m. before the service to rehearse you are most welcome. If you wish to host a reception or help with same, there is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the parish hall. If you have been with us in the past, we encourage you to come again; if you have never attended Taizé Prayer, please join us on November 18 th and give it a try we hope you will find the experience most worthwhile. Trinity Choristers Choristers is envisioned to be a dynamic, inclusive, and energetic group of young singers who explore church leadership through music. Open to all youth first grade and above who enjoy music and singing, 9 the Choristers will rehearse on the 1 st and 3 rd Sundays after coffee hour. Our rehearsals will take place in a fun atmosphere with a minimal time commitment and will prepare us to provide musical leadership monthly during worship. Please join us in the choir room after refreshments on the 1 st and 3 rd Sundays of each month!
