The words, of course, are based on today s Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It s only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week s readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke. 3 Page3 From Your Pastor 2/5/2017 Announcement Weekend If you are reading this, I have to assume you were at mass and picked up a bulletin. However, if you are reading this in some other way, let me spend a moment talking to you about the announcement I am making at all masses this weekend. In the aftermath of Making All Things New, the diocese decided it needed to promote the capital needs of merging parishes, so that their facilities could be better maintained, and more ecologically friendly. The diocese also had capital needs that needed to be addressed. The Cardinal decided that there would be an Archdiocesan wide capital campaign, called Renew and Rebuild. This campaign, rolled out in phases, would involve every church in the Archdiocese, and would raise the needed money for capital improvements on the parish level. If you were at mass this weekend, you heard my talk, and how much I believe in the mission and the future of our parish and school. I hope you picked up an envelope outlining the projects and what we hope to achieve. And most importantly I hope you will consider contributing to that effort. My term here is a maximum of 12 years. It is my goal to see to it that when those years are up our parish is a strong, financially secure and vibrant Catholic parish. I hope you will help us achieve that goal. Altar Servers A thank you to all the people, young and old, who volunteered for altar serving! We have ten people 8 young people, 2 adults - in training. We look forward to seeing them installed and serving! RCIA This Sunday at the 12 noon mass we welcome two more people into our RCIA program. People still ask what the RCIA is. It is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults; the way adults complete their sacraments and are welcomed into the Catholic faith. It is the ANCENT way all Christians were welcomed into the faith, with a period of preparation marked by certain rites or rituals. The ritual we perform at the 12 noon mass is the original form of that ritual we perform at the beginning of a baby s baptism. Remember when you traced the sign of the cross on your child s forehead? Well today we welcome our candidates and catechumens in the same way. Father Baker

4 Invitations, News, Thoughts and Prayers Page4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the custom of the stational liturgies was revived in the city of Rome in the early days of the twentieth century, the papal liturgy for Good Friday was appropriately housed in the stational church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. The church is off the tourist track today, but true pilgrims would never miss it. It stands on the grounds of the Sessorian Palace, the home of the Empress St. Helena, mother of Constantine. She dedicated her life to finding the true cross of Christ in Jerusalem, and desired to found a church in Rome for people who could not make the long and dangerous trip to the Holy Land. Eventually, it came to house relics of the cross. When the pope fled the city of Rome for Avignon, the religious institutions of Rome collapsed and the church was abandoned. Centuries later it was given into the care of monks. Amazingly, it concealed a forgotten treasure. In 1492 repairmen took down a brick wall and discovered a niche with the inscription Title of the Cross, and within, an ancient wooden tablet on which was carved the inscription dictated by Pilate for the cross of Christ in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. No one is certain that this is authentic, although its discovery was enough to give the church great prestige among pilgrims. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is in urgent need of overnight volunteers for the Saint Ignatius Loyola Women's Shelter located in Wallace Hall (980 Park Avenue), every other weekend through April. BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION Please support our parish school, St. Stephen of Hungary School, by collecting Box Tops for Education labels. This program helps provide books for the school library. You can find box top labels on hundreds of product packages including some of your favorites: Cheerios, Ziploc, Progresso Soup, and more. Visit for a list of all participating products. Please look for the small pink rectangle on the boxes and clip them out to deposit them in the collection box located in the back of the church.
