INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST VERITATEM FACIENTES IN CARITATE OLD ST. PATRICK ROMAN CATHOLIC ORATORY FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT LÆTÁRE March 22 - March 29, 2009 Monsignor R. Michael Schmitz, Provincial Superior Canon William Avis, Rector 806 Cherry Street Kansas City, MO w w w. I n s t i t u t e - C h r i s t - K i n g. o r g

Dear Faithful, Lætáre Sunday is the mid-point of Lent and the Church rejoices. Flowers adorn the altar, the organ is played once again, and the celebrant of the Mass wears rose colored vestments. The Church rejoices because we have made it half way through the Great Lent and desires that we refresh ourselves this day to regain the strength to continue on during this season and persevere until the glorious feast of Easter. In today s Gospel reading we hear of the Miracle of the Five Loaves, Dom Guéranger in his Liturgical Year comments on this. We find this Sunday called in several ancient documents, the Sunday of the five loaves. The miracle alluded to in this title not only forms an essential portion of the Church s instructions during Lent, but it is also an additional element of today s joy. We forget for an instant the coming Passion of the Son of God, to give our attention to the greatest of the benefits He has bestowed on us; for under the figure of these loaves multiplied by the power of Jesus, our faith sees that Bread which came down from heaven, and gives life to the world (John 6, 33) Such a miracle is, indeed, an evident proof of Jesus mission; but He intends it as a preparation for something far more wonderful; He intends it as a figure and a pledge of what He is soon to do, not merely once or twice, but every day, even to the end of time; not only for five thousand men, but for the countless multitude of believers. Great then must be our joy towards our Lord that comes to us daily under the appearances of the bread and wine in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Profound and heartfelt must be our adoration of such an august Sacrament. May It strengthen us and preserve us until our glorious resurrection in eternal life. In Christo Rege et Maria, Canon William Avis Rector of Old Saint Patrick Oratory

V. Lætátus sum in his, quæ dicta sunt mihi: in domum Dómini íbimus. V. Glória Patri... Laetare... Rejoice, O Jerusalem, and come together all you that love her: rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow: that you may exult, and be filled from the breasts of your consolation. V. I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: we shall go into the house of the Lord. V. Glory be to the Father... Rejoice... Grant, we beseech Thee, O almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds justly deserve to be punished, by the comfort of Thy grace may mercifully be relieved. Through our Lord... GRADUAL Psalm , 7 Lætátus sum in his, quæ dicta sunt mihi: in domum Dómini íbimus. V. Fiat pax in virtúte tua: et abundántia in túrribus tuis. A reading from the Epistle of the blessed Apostle Paul to the Galatians. Brethren: it is written that Abraham had two sons; the one by a bondwoman, and the other by a free woman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh; but he of the free woman was by promise: which things are said by an allegory. For these are the two testaments. The one from Mount Sinai, engendering unto bondage, which is Agar: for Sinai is a mountain in Arabia, which hath affinity to that Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children: but that Jerusalem which is above is free, which is our mother. For it is written: Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not: break forth and cry, thou that travailest not; for many are the children of the desolate, more than of her that hath a husband. Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then he that was born according to the flesh persecuted him that was after the spirit, so also it is now. But what saith the Scriptures? : Cast out the bondwoman and her son; for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman. So then, brethren, we are not the children of the bondwoman, but of the free; by the freedom wherewith Christ hath made us free. I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: we shall go into the house of the Lord. V. Let peace be in Thy strength: and abundance in Thy towers. 2

3 They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Sion: he shall not be moved forever that dwelleth in Jerusalem. Mountains are round about it: so the Lord is round about his people, from henceforth now and for ever. Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. John. At that time, Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee which is that of Tiberias; and a great multitude followed Him, because they saw the miracles which He did on them that were diseased. Jesus therefore went up into a mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. Now the pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand. When Jesus therefore had lifted up His eyes, and seen that a very great multitude cometh to Him, He said to Philip: Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat? And this He said to try him; for He Himself knew what He would do. Philip answered Him: Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little. One of His disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to Him: There is a boy here that hath five barley loaves and two fishes: but what are these among so many? Then Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when He had given thanks, He distributed to them that were set down. In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would. And when they were filled, He said to His disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost. They gathered up therefore, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten. Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said, This is of a truth the prophet that is to come into the world. Jesus therefore, when He knew that they would come to take Him by force and make Him king, fled again into the mountain Himself alone. Praise ye the Lord, for He is good: sing ye to His name, for He is sweet: whatsoever He pleased He hath done in Heaven and in earth.

May this victim, we beseech Thee, O Lord, cleanse away our sins, sanctifying Thy servants in both soul and body for the celebration of this sacrifice. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son. Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God. Jerusalem, which is built as a city, which is compact together: for thither did the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, to praise Thy name, O Lord. Merciful God, who ceasest not to lavish upon us the riches of Thy sacraments; grant that we may ever draw near to Thine Altar with deepest reverence and with faith unwavering. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Who livest and reignest, with God the Father. All Evil Inclinations Must Be Purged Away * * * * * * * * INTRODUCTION TO THE DEVOUT LIFE Part I, Chapter 24 Furthermore, my child, we have certain natural inclinations, which are not strictly speaking either mortal or venial sins, but rather imperfections; and the acts in which they take shape, failings and deficiencies. Thus Saint Jerome says that Saint Paula had so strong a tendency to excessive sorrow, that when she lost her husband and children she nearly died of grief: that was not a sin, but an imperfection, since it did not depend upon her wish and will. Some people are naturally easy, some oppositions; some are indisposed to accept other men's opinions, some naturally disposed to be cross, some to be affectionate--in short, there is hardly anyone in whom some such imperfections do not exist. Now, although they be natural and instinctive in each person, they may be remedied and corrected, or even eradicated, by cultivating the reverse disposition. And this, my child, must be done. Gardeners have found how to make the bitter almond tree bear sweet fruit, by grafting the juice of the latter upon it, why should we not purge out our perverse dispositions and infuse such as are good? There is no disposition so good but it may be made bad by dint of vicious habits, and neither is there any natural disposition so perverse but that it may be conquered and overcome by God's Grace primarily, and then by our earnest diligent endeavor. I shall therefore now proceed to give you counsels and suggest practices by which you may purify your soul 4

from all dangerous affections and imperfections, and from all tendencies to venial sin, thereby strengthening yourself more and more against mortal sin. May God give you grace to use them. 8 THE SOCIETY OF THE SACRED HEART: LAY FAITHFUL LIVE THE SPIRITUALITY OF THE INSTITUTE A lay association within the spiritual family of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, the Society of the Sacred Heart gives the opportunity for lay faithful to participate more deeply by a serious engagement in the spirituality of the Institute. Members of the Society read and meditate often on the various spiritual works and saintly examples of St. Francis de Sales, St. Benedict, and St. Thomas Aquinas. In this way, the members of the Society of the Sacred Heart strive to live a Catholic life in an ever-growing harmony between nature, grace, faith, and culture, totally faithful to the teachings of Holy Mother Church and to the See of Peter, with an emphasis on charity toward God and our neighbor. Members of the Society are invited to place themselves under the spiritual direction of the priests of the Institute. They also participate in spiritual retreats and gatherings of the Institute s family organized locally or nationally by the chaplains of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Members may also participate in the Church s Liturgical life by the recitation of one of the hours of the Divine Office, for example, Compline, which is the night prayer of the Church. Interested lay faithful can become members of the Society of the Sacred Heart by contacting the Institute priest serving at the apostolate closest to them. These faithful are then invited to the national retreat of the Society, which will take place at the Shrine of Christ the King from Friday, June 12, to Sunday June 14. His Eminence Cardinal George will open the retreat with Solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, and Monsignor Wach, Prior General, and Monsignor Schmitz, Vicar General and Superior of the Institute s American houses, will preach the spiritual conferences.
