Ashes to Ashes An ICC Lenten Retreat Compline Service Saturdays, February 20 & February 27, 2016 St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church Purcellville, Virginia ~with~ Rev. Msgr. Charles Pope
Compline Please turn off all cell phones. Note: Unless otherwise directed, please remain standing. Cantor: Officiant: All: Trans: Your blessing, please. May the all-powerful Lord grant us a peaceful night and a perfect end. Amen. Short Reading: I Peter 5:8-9 (Officiant) Brothers, be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith. But thou, O Lord, have mercy on us. Response: (All) Thanks be to God. (Officiant) Our help is in the name of the Lord. (All) Who made heaven and earth. Our Father (All) Trans: Pater noster, qui es in caelis, Our Father, who art in heaven, Sanctificetur nomen tuum. Hallowed be thy name. Adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua, sicut in coelo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie. Et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem: Sed libera nos a malo. Amen. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: But deliver us from evil. Amen.
Confiteor (All) I confess to almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the Saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word and deed: through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I beseech blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Amen. Officiant: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. All: Amen. Officiant: May the almighty and merciful Lord + grant us pardon, absolution and remission of our sins. All: Amen. Officiant: Convert us + O God our Saviour: All: And let thy anger cease from us. Officiant: O God + come to my assistance; All: O Lord, make haste to help me. Cantor: (All bow.) Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto. All: Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculórum. Amen. Antiphon (Chorus Sine Nomine) Trans: Let my prayer come in before Thee, Lord.
Psalms Note: The psalms are chanted between two choirs, alternating verses. Psalm 87 Choir 1 O Lord, the God of my salvation: * (sit) I have cried in the day, and in the night before thee. Choir 2 Let my prayer come in before thee: * incline thy ear to my petition. Choir 1 For my soul is filled with evils: * and my life hath drawn nigh to hell. Choir 2 I am counted among them that go down to the pit: * I am become as a man without help, free among the dead. Choir 1 Like the slain sleeping in the sepulchres, whom thou rememberest no more: * and they are cast off from thy hand. Choir 2 They have laid me in the lower pit: * in the dark places, and in the shadow of death. Choir 1 Thy wrath is strong over me: * and all thy waves thou hast brought in upon me. Choir 2 Thou hast put away my acquaintance far from me: * they have set me an abomination to themselves. Choir 1 I was delivered up, and came not forth: * my eyes languished through poverty. Choir 2 All the day I cried to thee, O Lord: * I stretched out my hands to thee. Choir 1 Wilt thou show wonders to the dead? * or shall physicians raise to life, and give praise to thee? Choir 2 Shall any one in the sepulchre declare thy mercy: * and thy truth in destruction? Choir 1 Shall thy wonders be known in the dark; * and thy justice in the land of forgetfulness?
Choir 2 But I, O Lord, have cried to thee: * and in the morning my prayer shall prevent thee. Choir 1 Lord, why castest thou off my prayer: * why turnest thou away thy face from me? Choir 2 I am poor, and in labours from my youth: * and being exalted have been humbled and troubled. Choir 1 Thy wrath hath come upon me: * and thy terrors have troubled me. Choir 2 They have come round about me like water all the day: * they have compassed me about together. Choir 1 Friend and neighbour thou hast put far from me: * (stand) and my acquaintance, because of misery. Choir 2 Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto. Choir 1 Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in saecula saeculórum. Amen. Psalm 102 Choir 1 Bless the Lord, O my soul: * (sit) and let all that is within me bless his holy name. Choir 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, * and never forget all he hath done for thee. Choir 1 Who forgiveth all thy iniquities: * who healeth all thy diseases. Choir 2 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction: * who crowneth thee with mercy and compassion. Choir 1 Who satisfieth thy desire with good things: * thy youth shall be renewed like the eagle's. Choir 2 The Lord doth mercies, * and judgment for all that suffer wrong. Choir 1 He hath made his ways known to Moses: * his wills to the children of Israel.
Choir 2 The Lord is compassionate and merciful: * longsuffering and plenteous in mercy. Choir 1 He will not always be angry: * nor will he threaten for ever. Choir 2 He hath not dealt with us according to our sins: * nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. Choir 1 For according to the height of the heaven above the earth: * he hath strengthened his mercy towards them that fear him. Choir 2 As far as the east is from the west, * (stand) so far hath he removed our iniquities from us. Choir 1 Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto. Choir 2 Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in saecula saeculórum. Amen. Psalm 102 (remain standing) Choir 1 As a father hath compassion on his children, so hath the Lord compassion on them that fear him: For he knoweth our frame. Choir 2 He remembereth that we are dust: Man's days are as grass, * as the flower of the field so shall he flourish. Choir 1 For the spirit shall pass in him, and he shall not be: * and he shall know his place no more. Choir 2 But the mercy of the Lord is from eternity and unto eternity, * upon them that fear him. Choir 1 And his justice unto children's children, * to such as keep his covenant. Choir 2 And are mindful * of his commandments to do them.
Choir 1 The Lord hath prepared his throne in heaven: * and his kingdom shall rule over all. Choir 2 Bless the Lord, all ye his angels: you that are mighty in strength, and execute his word, * hearkening to the voice of his orders. Choir 1 Bless the Lord, all ye his hosts: * you ministers of his that do his will. Choir 2 Bless the Lord, all his works: * in every place of his dominion, O my soul, bless thou the Lord. Choir 1 Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto. Choir 2 Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in saecula saeculórum. Amen. Antiphon (All) Trans: Let my prayer come in before Thee, Lord. Common of Compline Te Lucis (Chorus Sine Nomine) Trans: Before the ending of the day, Creator of the world, we pray that with thy wonted favor thou wouldst be our guard and keeper now. From all ill dreams defend our eyes, From nightly fears and fantasies; Tread under foot our ghostly foe, That no pollution we may know. O Father, that we ask be done, Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son; Who, with the Holy Spirit and thee, Doth live and reign eternally. Amen.
Little Chapter Jer 14:9 (Officiant) But thou, O Lord, art among us, and thy name is called upon by us, forsake us not. (All) Thanks be to God. Short Responsory (Chorus Sine Nomine) Trans: Into thy hands, O Lord * I commend my spirit. For thou hast redeemed us, O Lord, God of truth. I commend my spirit. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Into thy hands, O Lord, * I commend my spirit. Keep us, Lord, as the apple of thine eye. Protect us under the shadow of your wings. Antiphon (Chorus Sine Nomine) Trans: Protect us, * Lord, while we are awake, and safeguard us while we sleep, that we may keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.
Canticle of Simeon (All) Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, * according to thy word in peace; Because my eyes have seen * thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared * before the face of all peoples: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, * and the glory of thy people Israel. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in saecula saeculórum. Amen. Antiphon (Chorus Sine Nomine) Trans: Protect us, * Lord, while we are awake, and safeguard us while we sleep, that we may keep watch with Christ and rest in peace. Prayer Officiant: O Lord, hear my prayer. All: And let my cry come unto thee.
Officiant: Let us pray. Visit we beseech thee, O Lord, this dwelling, and drive far from it the snares of the enemy. Let thy holy angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace and let thy blessing be always upon us. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. All: Amen. Officiant: O Lord, hear my prayer. All: And let my cry come unto thee. Conclusion Officiant: Benedicamus Domino. Let us bless the Lord. All: Deo gratias. Thanks be to God. Officiant: Benedicat et custodiat nos omnipotens The almighty and merciful et misericors Dominus, Pater, + et Filius, et Spiritus Sanctus. Lord the Father, + the Son and the Holy Spirit bless us and keep us. All: Amen. Amen. Final Antiphons of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Chorus Sine Nomine) Ave, Regina Caelorum, Ave, Domina Angelorum: Salve, radix, salve, porta Ex qua mundo lux est orta: Gaude, Virgo gloriosa, Super omnes speciosa, Vale, o valde decora, Et pro nobis Christum exora. Officiant: Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O sacred Virgin. All: Give me strength against thine enemies. Officiant: Let us pray: We beseech thee, O Lord, mercifully to assist our infirmity: that like as we do now commemorate Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, Mother of God; so by the help of her intercession we may die to our former sins and rise again to newness of life, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. Officiant: Divinum auxilium maneat semper nobiscum. All: Amen. Trans. May the divine assistance remain always with us. Amen. Hail, O Queen of Heaven enthroned. Hail, by angels mistress owned. Root of Jesse, Gate of Morn Whence the world's true light was born: Glorious Virgin, Joy to thee, Loveliest whom in heaven they see; Fairest thou, where all are fair, Plead with Christ our souls to spare.
