5 Hymn Basil looked back on his war service with great admiration for the Royal Navy, the concern of its officers for those under their command, the support of the petty officers, and the devotion to duty shown by all. Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm hath bound the restless wave, who bidd st the mighty ocean deep its own appointed limits keep: O hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea. In the polemical world of Oxford Philosophy he went out of his way to deal fairly with opponents opinions, often articulating their arguments better than they had been able to do themselves, and never trying to score debating points.
