2 REQUIRED LENTEN FASTING Ash Wednesday (February 22nd) and Good Friday (April 6th) are days of Fast and Abstinence and all the Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. Abstinence is from meat by Catholics 14 years and older. Fasting is by all Catholics 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those bound by the rule of fasting may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. LENTEN DEVOTIONS Stations of the Cross followed by veneration of the relic of the True Cross will be held on the Fridays of Lent at 12 p.m. (all Fridays) and at 6:45 p.m. (all Fridays, except March 2nd and April 6th). Holy Hour of Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Confessions will be held on all Wednesdays of Lent at 12 p.m. FIRST FRIDAYS Heart of Jesus, propitiation for our sins, have mercy on us! When our Lord appeared to Saint Margaret-Mary Alacoque, He said, I promise thee in the excess of the mercy of My Heart, that its all-powerful Love will grant to all those who shall receive Communion on the First Friday of Nine consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they shall not die under My displeasure, nor without receiving the Sacraments; My Heart shall be their assured refuge at that last hour. Since then, the first Friday of the month has been dedicated towards devotion to the most Sacred Heart of our Lord and reparation for sin. Each first Friday at the Oratory there is a holy hour of Adoration in order to make reparation for the sin of abortion and other crimes against human life. The holy hour will follow the 6 p.m. Mass. Also donations of baby supplies such as pre -natal vitamins, newborn size onesies, and warm outerwear will be collected in the vestibule and given to a local pro-life group. FIRST SATURDAYS First Saturday devotions will be held on the first Saturday of every month. After holy Mass, there will be the rosary, Fatima prayers, novena devotions and Benediction of the most Blessed Sacrament. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!

6 THE LITURGICAL YEAR - THE HISTORY OF LENT By Dom Prosper Gueranger Continued from last week Lent, then, is a time consecrated, in an especial manner, to penance; and this penance is mainly practiced by Fasting. Fasting is an abstinence, which man voluntarily imposes upon himself, as an expiation for sin, and which, during Lent, is practiced in obedience to the general law of the Church. According to the actual discipline* of the Western Church, the Fast of Lent is not more rigorous than that prescribed for the Vigils of certain Feasts, and for the Ember Days; but it is kept up for Forty successive Days, with the single interruption of the intervening Sundays. We deem it unnecessary to show the importance and advantages of Fasting. The Sacred Scriptures, both of the Old and New Testament, are filled with the praises of this holy practice. The traditions of every nation of the world testify the universal veneration, in which it has ever been held; for there is not a people, nor a religion, how much soever it may have lost the purity of primitive traditions, which is not impressed with this conviction, - that man may appease his God by subjecting his body to penance. St. Basil, St. John Chrysostom, St. Jerome, and St. Gregory the Great, make the remark, that the commandment put upon our First Parents, in the earthly paradise, was one of Abstinence; and that it was by their not exercising this virtue, that they brought every kind of evil upon themselves and us their children. The life of privation, which the king of creation had thenceforward to lead on the earth, - (for the earth was to yield him nothing of its own natural growth, save thorns and thistles,) - was the clearest possible exemplification of the law of penance, imposed by the anger of God on rebellious man. During the two thousand and more years, which preceded the Deluge, men had no other food than the fruits of the earth, and these were only got by the toil of hard labor. But when God, as we have already observed, mercifully shortened man s life, (that so he might have less time and power for sin), - he permitted him to eat the flesh of animals, as an additional nourishment in that state of deteriorated strength. It was then, also, that Noah, guided by a divine inspiration, extracted the juice of the grape, which thus formed a second stay for human debility. Fasting, then, is the abstaining from such nourishments as these, which were permitted for the support of bodily strength. And firstly, it consisted in abstinence from flesh-meat, because it is a food that was given to man by God, out of condescension to his weakness, and not as one absolutely essential for the maintenance of life. Its privation, greater or less according to the regulations of the Church, is essential to the very notion of Fasting. Thus, whilst in many countries, the use of eggs, milk-meats, and even dripping and lard, is tolerated, - the abstaining from flesh-meat is everywhere maintained, as being essential to Fasting. For many centuries, eggs and milk-meats were not allowed, because they come under the class of animal food: even to this day, they are forbidden in the Eastern Churches, and are only allowed in the Latin Church by virtue of an annual dispensation. The precept of abstaining from flesh-meat is so essential to Lent, that even on Sundays, when the Fasting is interrupted, Abstinence is an obligation, binding even on those who are dispensed from the fasts of the week, unless there be a special dispensation granted for eating meat on the Sundays. To be continued * The author writes this in the 19th century, the current regulations on fasting different from what here is stated. 4

7 VOTIVE PRAYERS FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEAD Collect--Almighty and everlasting God, Who hast dominion over the living and the dead and art merciful to all whom Thou foreknowest will be Thine by faith and good works, we humbly beseech Thee, that all for whom we have resolved to offer up our prayers, whether the present world still keeps them in the flesh or the next world has already received them set free from the body, may, by the intercession of all Thy saints, obtain through Thy mercy and clemency the pardon of all their sins. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Secret--O God, Who alone knowest the number of the elect who shall attain to heavenly bliss, grant, we beseech Thee, that, by the intercession of all Thy saints, the names of all who have been recommended to our prayers, and all the faithful may be written in the book of blessed predestination. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Postcommunion--We beseech Thee, almighty and merciful God, that the sacraments which we have received may purify us; and by the intercession of all Thy saints, grant that this Thy sacrament may not be a reason for condemnation, but a saving plea for forgiveness: may it wash away our sins, be the strength of the weak, a protection against all the perils of the world: and may it avail for the forgiveness of all the sins of the faithful, whether living or dead. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. SPIRITUAL COUNSELS OF SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES Deepen day by day the resolution to serve God devotedly, to attend to His will and be entirely His. Reserve nothing for yourself or for the world. Embrace with sincerity the holy designs to God, whatever they are. Never deceive yourself that you have realized purity of heart unless you are entirely, freely and joyfully subject to God's holy will in all things, even the most repugnant. Therefore, do not consider so much what you do but the One Who commands you to do them. He will further His own glory and our perfections, even in those things that seem to us lowly and imperfect. (Letters 282) 5
