1 Presentation and Purification February 1 Thought for the Week Today, we celebrate the feast of the Purification of Mary and Presentation of Christ in the Temple. In the Gospel (Luke 2.22ff) the old man, Simeon, tells Mary that a sword shall pierce your own soul on account of her child. Blessed Mary, who had been found worthy of gifts surpassing nature, did at the time of the passion suffer the pangs which she had escaped at childbirth. When she saw him put to death as a criminal the man she knew to be God when she gave birth to him her heart was torn from maternal compassion and she was rent by her thoughts as by a sword. This is the meaning of and a sword will pierce through your own soul. But her grief gave way to the joy of the resurrection, the resurrection which proclaimed him to be God who had died in the flesh. I am the light of the world; I am the bread of life; I am the good shepherd; and so on. I propose to use these as the basis for a Lenten series of bible studies in the Gospel of St John. The speaker this month is Chris Hodgson, a senior engineer at the City of Waterloo, who will give a talk on the City's award winning project of re-designing Davenport Road from a dangerous high speed four-lane road to a user friendly street for all modes of transportation. There is a weekly prayer meeting at 10:30 am every Sunday in the church office. OUT AND ABOUT The Kiwanis Music Festival of Guelph is hosting its annual Festival Gala Concert on Friday, February 6 th, 7 pm at the Guelph Youth Music Centre.
