The story follows the members of the First Continental Congress and the tremendous challenges they faced in the month or so leading up to the vote for independence and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, The movie of the musical that we watch stars William Daniels as John Adams, Howard Da Silva as Benjamin Franklin and Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson. Just like most musicals, 1776 has its light-hearted moments, like when Franklin, Jefferson, Adams and two other delegates try to decide who should draft the declaration. Of course, they debate the matter in song: But Mr. Adams. When Franklin first suggests that Adams write it, Adams replies, Is that so? Well, if I'm the one to do it, they'll run their quill pens through it. I'm obnoxious and disliked, you know that, sir. (They did know it, so it was Jefferson who finally penned the Declaration of Independence.) There were also serious moments, such as when Congress debated whether to keep the slavery clause. Delegate Edward Rutledge (played by John Cullum) sings dramatically about the hypocrisy of the North in Molasses and Rum : Who sail the ships back to Boston ladened with gold, see it gleam, whose fortunes are made in the triangle trade? Hail slavery, the New England dream! Some of the most interesting moments are when antagonist John Dickinson (played by Donald Madden), delegate of Pennsylvania, persistently lays out reasons throughout the movie to remain under British rule and seek reconciliation instead. In short, he argues that as British citizens, they all reaped the benefits of financial wealth and security, that the ill treatment by the British government is a mere pittance to pay for their comfortable lifestyle and should just be tolerated. Going against the government was treason, which meant death if they were unsuccessful, if they didn t die on the battlefield first. These moments in the movie, added to the periodic discouraging news from George Washington on the battlefront, remind us of the tremendous odds against the colonies winning their independence, but our Founding Fathers felt compelled to choose death of their safe and secure status over a new life of freedom, but uncertainty, for themselves and all of us who followed. Similarly, today s second reading asks us to think of a new life in Christ. Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. Whether we are living comfortably and securely, but witnessing need, inequality and injustice or we are living a life of grief, oppression, or insecurity, let us all bind together, help one another each seek a new life with Christ, one that affirms freedom from hate, intolerance, poverty, addiction, depression and all that prevent us from being true disciples of Jesus and daughters and sons of God. Let this freedom ring. Lillian Kwiatkowski The Parish Office will be closed Monday, July 3rd and Tuesday, July 4th in honor of Independence Day. Page 2 13th in Ordinary Time July 2, 2017

We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member. This program is for baptized children in 2nd grade and higher. CLOW (Children s Liturgy of the Word) During the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses, children are dismissed to the Parish Ministry Center Chapel for an age appropriate Liturgy of the Word. The children return to church during the Presentation of the Gifts. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Are you an adult seeking baptism? Or were you baptized Catholic as a child but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? This program is a process of spiritual and education formation through a conversion of mind and heart. It is marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the parish community. It is open to all who genuinely seek, by God s grace to live their lives in the Catholic Christian faith. Our next informal gathering is TUESDAY, JULY 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Ministry Center Do you feel God s call to share your faith with others? Have you thought about becoming a catechist for our Children s Liturgy of the Word on mornings? A catechist is a person of faith who responds to that call, and passes on the traditions and teachings of our Church to others. Our Children s Liturgy of the Word allows our children to be in a focused environment that opens their hearts and minds to hear and to respond to God s Word in an age appropriate manner. Baptism of School-Age Children If your child is seven years or older and unbaptized, we provide the Rite of Christian Initiation adapted for children. Please call Mary Kane at (408) ext. 104 for more information. Page 4 13th in Ordinary Time July 2, 2017

These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning Charles Carroll of Carrolltown a defiant come and get me if you dare postscript aimed at the British. Carroll s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world.
