8 EPISTLE READING Let Us Be Attentive.. Verse: You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us. Save me O Lord, for the godly man has failed. Wisdom.. The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 1:10-14; 2:1-3 Let us be Attentive.. "IN THE BEGINNING, you O Lord, didst found the earth, and the heavens are the work of thy hands; they will perish, but thou remainest; they will all grow old like a garment, like a mantle thou wilt roll them up, and they will be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years will never end." But to what angel has he ever said, "Sit at my right hand, till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet?" Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation? Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him. 8

9 GOSPEL READING The Reading is from Mark 2:1-12 At that time, Jesus entered Capernaum and it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak thus? It is a blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your pallet and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins"-he said to the paralytic-"i say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home." And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!" 9

10 MINISTRY NEWS PHILOPTOHOS NEWS GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING: Sunday, March 18 th in the Huffington Center General Assembly room on the 2 nd floor! The meeting will start immediately after church. Philoptohos is starting a new project to raise money for the Metropolis Kids n Cancer Camps. These camps give children with cancer and their families a few days away from the world of illness and treatments, where they can have some fun. We will be selling various See s Easter Candy items at our meeting on the 18 th and for the next three Sundays thereafter, ending on April 8 th. All proceeds will go to our donation for the Kids n Cancer Camps. DEBUTANTE BALL: Chairman Katrina Beers is making plans for the next Debutante Ball, to be held on Sunday, January 20, She is planning an informational meeting in May. For further details you may call Katrina at (714) MOTHER OF THE YEAR: It is with great pleasure to announce that the 2012 Mother of the Year is BESS PAPPAS. Bess has given many years of service to the church, her family and to Philoptohos. She will be honored at our Mothers Day Luncheon and Fashion Show on Saturday, May 12 at the Universal Sheraton Hotel. Letters for the program book and invitations will be out soon. We hope you will join us in honoring Bess. Chairman Judie Christopoulos and her committee are working hard to put on a wonderful event! FEED THE HUNGRY PROJECT is working with the Los Angeles Mission and a Women s Shelter to help distribute our lunches. Today we are taking the lunches to a woman s shelter. The people who run the Missions and Shelters are so very grateful for the donations. If you wish to be an angel and join in the project, the sack lunches need to be ready to go and should be dropped off to us at the bench located closest to the parking lot outside church (near the ramp). We leave promptly at 11:30 a.m. to distribute the food. For April we have been asked to collect items needed by the Women s Shelter. Please see the next page for more information. CHANGE FROM THE HEART: PENNIES AND PRAYER PROGRAM is a Metropolis Program, close to the heart of Metropolitan Gerasimos. The Commission for Orthodox Missions and Evangelism spreads the word of our faith through Missions and new churches. Canisters will be in the Sunday School classrooms so your children can bring their change and donate in class. If you wish to donate through Philoptohos you may do that also. Your donation will help support our current mission parishes and begin new ones. MEMBERSHIP DUES: Don t forget to pay your Philoptohos membership dues! Your dues support our commitments to the Metropolis and National Philoptohos programs. You will also be added to our membership mailing list and kept informed of our events. 10

11 BLANKETS FOR CHILDREN: If you are a talented person who can sew, this project is for you. Our blanket project for Miller s Children s Hospital is off to a wonderful start and we d love for you to join in. The hospital will happily accept your donation of a small, tiny blankie for preemie/newborn babies and for toddlers who are in the hospital. Blankets should be cotton/cotton fleece only and can be as tiny as 6x6, 8x8 for the newborn babies and 12 to 24 inches for toddlers. If you don t sew but would like to donate a new receiving blanket or crib blanket, the hospital will be happy to accept that as well. Please leave blankets in the Narthex for Virginia. Thank you to all of you ladies who have donated!! BAKING GALATOBOURIKO: If you can help with baking trays of galatobouriko for the Easter Picnic, please call Scarlett Billis at Baking will be on Holy Saturday morning starting at 10:00 a.m. You must call Scarlett if you are going to help because the church requires that Scarlett gives them a list of the volunteers in advance. Thank you! APRIL DONATION FOR WOMEN S SHELTER: During the month of April as we prepare to celebrate Easter and the Resurrection of our Lord, the earth changes from the dormant months of fall and winter, to a renewal of life with new grass and flowers and trees blooming. It is for this reason that instead of collecting lunches for the hungry in April, we are going to collect new packages of socks, underwear and undershirts for women and their children who are in safe house locations, away from abusive husbands and boyfriends. The agency that collects these items specifically asked me for these items! I always believe that where there is a need, you will respond with love and generosity. We must give these women some hope and faith that their lives can change and something new will happen for them. There can be nothing worse than to feel completely hopeless. The items must be new and still in the store packages. You can buy any sizes you wish as the agency said various assorted sizes needed. Just about every store will be running a sale before Easter time. You can find these items just about everywhere, Wal-Mart, Target, Dollar Stores, Sears, Marshalls, drugstores and discount stores. If you happen to be out shopping anyway perhaps you could buy an item and donate it to these women and children. Items may be brought to church labeled for Virginia on Sundays. Everyone in the Narthex knows where I am on Sunday and they can locate me (left hand side, row 10). Collections will begin on Sunday, April 1 st and end on Sunday, April 29. I will make the deliveries to the agency shortly thereafter, before Mother s Day. Thank you for anything you can donate. May God bless you for having mercy and compassion for those who are suffering. Simply clean out your closets or better yet, conduct your own clothing drive at school, work or in your neighborhood. This is St. Sophia's 10th annual, 5 TONS OF LOVE clothing drive! 16 MINISTRY NEWS (continued) SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS It is with great sadness that I share this news: After a long illness Bertha Zagorianos, a volunteer in the Saint Sophia Nursery for over 50 years, passed away. Her Trisagion and Funeral were held last week. Bertha has been a "yiayia" to decades of our youngest parishioners and I am sure everyone joins me in expressing their sympathies to Marsha and Kathy over the loss of their mother, our dear "YiaYia Bertha". Our Nursery program will always be a warm, friendly place for our youngest members because of the legacy Bertha has left behind. SOPHIA CATHEDRAL DOCENTS Each year our St. Sophia Cathedral welcomes thousands of visitors who come from all over the world to see this designated historical site of Los Angeles. With the addition of the Huffington Center, we anticipate that we will have even more visitors, so we are seeking volunteers to become Docents to welcome these guests to enjoy the magnificence of our Cathedral. Becoming a Docent is a wonderful way to serve our church, learn about its history and iconography, and also meet interesting people. It only takes 4 hours, one day per month. No public speaking experience is necessary. All materials are given to you. By registering your Ralphs Card online or in person for every dollar your household spends a percentage will be given by Ralphs to Camp Zoe to further the mission of providing a camping program structured to meet the needs of children with severe physical and mental disabilities who come from families living with economic challenges within the city of Los Angeles. Camp Zoe is designed to help campers develop a "sense of self. Your own rewards will not be affected. 100% of the money received will go directly to Camp Zoe. Camp Zoe is a Ministry of Saint Sophia. 23 For those who are sick or suffering St. James advises us, If anyone among you is sick, let him call for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
