7 EPISTLE READING Let Us Be Attentive.. Verse: O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. To you, O Lord, I have cried. O my God. Wisdom.. The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18 Let us be Attentive.. BRETHREN, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and not only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. GOSPEL READING The Reading is from John 3:13-17 The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him." 8

10 MINISTRY NEWS PHILOPTOHOS NEWS Our first GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING will be held on Sunday, September 18 th immediately after liturgy in the apartment residence complex behind the church. We hope you will make an effort to come in, even for a short time, to hear what we have planned for this year. This will also be Sunday of the Holy Cross and Philoptohos will be passing a tray for Holy Cross/Hellenic College which is one of our National Obligations. 'AN EVENING WITH FRIENDS' We are pleased and happy to announce that we are honoring Rev. Father Peter V. Lambert at our dinner to be held on Saturday, January 28th, More details will follow as soon as our plans are confirmed. Father Lambert is a wonderful man who has been involved in many Philanthropic groups. He was a major member in the Office of Economic Opportunity (War on Poverty), VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) project and the Philanthropia, Inc. group that was started more than 12 years ago. Father Lambert is still helping people, by speaking at numerous hospitals and groups on HIV/AIDS, collecting food and clothing for shelters in the area around the church, and much more. We hope you will join us in honoring Father Lambert on this special evening to thank him for all he has done and is still doing. This is one of our major fundraiser's, for the year, which will enable Philoptohos to continue helping the sick and the needy, while fulfilling our National and Metropolis obligations. 11 MINISTRY NEWS (continued) PHILANTHROPIA MINISTRY NEWS CITY OF HOPE PEDIATRIC MEMORIAL BOOKLET: This is now our 9 th year sponsoring the Memorial Service and Booklet for the City of Hope Medical Center Pediatric Unit. Our liaison, Dr. Randi McAllister, on the Pediatric staff, together with a team of doctors and nurses, host the parents and families to remember their children who were victims to cancer. Each parent and family have a page dedicated to their child with pictures, love notes, poems, etc., a way of helping the family deal with the loss of the child. Please mail your donations to the Cathedral or place in the collection tray. Thank you so much for your concern and support. PHILANTHROPIA TEAM BOARD MEETING: Coming up in October, we will have our annual meeting. A specific time and place on the church grounds will be forthcoming. Please plan to attend. Thank you. USED CLOTHING and CANNED GOODS: Please identify all clothing donations on the outside of the bags by indicating whether they are for men, women or children. The two new receptacles for "used clothing" and "canned goods" are working great. They are located side by side, in the general area of the chapel. Thank you! 12 MINISTRY NEWS (continued) GREEK SCHOOL - HELLENIC ACADEMY NEWS It gives me great pleasure to announce that registration is now open at the Hellenic Academy s newly updated website. Please use the following link: You can read about our school, our educational program for children and adults, and you can view our class schedule. You can also find information on tuition and registration. Please note the deadline for registration & tuition payment was September 3 rd. My teaching team and I are very excited about moving into our new classrooms during the academic year, , and we look forward to many years of progress and growth, aiming for the transition of our Greek language and culture to the next generations. The mission is rich in the history and traditions of early California. We will visit the Mission Church, the museum, the beautiful grounds and garden. Then we ll go to lunch at Twohey s restaurant, which will include 2 choices: (1) Clubhouse Sandwich and fries, (2) Cheeseburger and fries. Both choices will include a drink, coffee, and dessert. After lunch we will continue on to visit St. Steven s Serbian Orthodox Church in Alhambra. Cost of the trip is $30 per person which includes bus transportation, mission entry and lunch. SOPHIA GREEK FOLK DANCE PROGRAM Annual Orientation and Registration Meeting The Greek Folk Dance Program will hold their Annual Orientation and Registration Meeting TODAY, September 11 1:00 PM in the Fellowship Tent at the cathedral. It is critical that you attend this meeting in order to complete your registration forms, pay your fees, and receive updated information on the program. You may also access the registration forms from Saint Sophia Cathedral s website. This year s program will have 5 groups with over 60 participants. If your child is 5 years old by December 1 st they are eligible to join our youngest group. Please plan to attend the meeting if you are 18 years old or older. We will also discuss our plans to conduct the practices during the construction period. The goal of the Dance Program is to teach our children our rich culture and heritage through dance and song which go hand in hand with our faith. Please join us. Your attendance is mandatory. We are excited to offer you an opportunity to share the progress of the new Community Center as it comes to life with a series of Hard Hat Sundays. 18 SAINT SOPHIA CAMP NEWS COMMUNITY NEWS (continued) On Friday, October 14, 2011 we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Saint Sophia Camp at our annual Golf Tournament Banquet and Awards dinner. We invite all the former Mr. and Mrs. Club Members instrumental in starting our camping program, all the former camp committee chairmen, former camp directors, staff, and counselors who have participated in our program throughout the years, to join us for this special event. The Golf Tournament will take place during the day at the Montebello Golf Course with the banquet dinner following at the clubhouse at 5:00 pm. (please see flyer on page 16) Dinner is $40/person, but is included if one is playing golf in the tournament.
