Οὕτως καὶ ἡμεῖς, ὅτε ἦμεν νήπιοι, ὑπὸ τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου ἦμεν δεδουλωμένοι ὅτε δὲ ἦλθεν τὸ πλήρωμα τοῦ χρόνου, ἐξαπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ, γενόμενον ἐκ γυναικός, γενόμενον ὑπὸ νόμον, ἵνα τοὺς ὑπὸ νόμον ἐξαγοράσῃ, ἵνα τὴν υἱοθεσίαν ἀπολάβωμεν. 6

7 EPISTLE READING Let Us Be Attentive.. Verse: God is wonderful in His saints. Bless God in the congregations. Wisdom.. The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 3:23-29; 4:1-5 Let us be Attentive.. BRETHREN, before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 7

8 GOSPEL READING The Reading is from Luke 13:10-17 At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day." Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him. 8

9 MINISTRY NEWS PHILOPTOHOS NEWS Our Christmas projects are coming up quickly. It's hard to believe that Christmas is already here! The "Angel" Tree project has begun. A tree is in the Narthex with Angel tags hanging on it. On the tags are 'wish' list items for the four families we are helping this year. These families are in very difficult times and our gifts will make their Christmas morning brighter. The Mission of Philoptohos is to help the sick, the poor and the needy. We have been in close contact with these families and their circumstances. If you'd like to be an "angel" to someone, pick a tag from the tree and purchase the new item as a gift. (Please NO used gifts). We ask that you wrap the gift in Christmas paper and tape the tag back onto the gift so that we know what it is and which family it is for. Each tag is numbered for identification purposes. The gifts will be distributed to the families on Sunday, December 18th so please bring your item back to the church Narthex before that day. Philoptohos is also giving each family a $100 food card so that they may purchase a Christmas dinner for their family. THANK YOU to everyone who donated soft toys to the Salvin School toy drive. They were very much appreciated by the children and their siblings. We would also like to thank Katrina and Greg Beers for their generous donation of Girl Scout Cookies. We were able to add the boxes of cookies to the Food Boxes for the families of the children at the Salvin School. It was a very thoughtful addition and we are sure they will all appreciate those delicious cookies. You have all brought happiness to these families at Christmas time. AN EVENING WITH FRIENDS dinner honoring Father Peter Lambert is set for Saturday, January 28th, 2012, at the Bel Air Hotel. The solicitation packages are out in the mail and the invitations will be out soon. This will be a wonderful and fun evening. Father's son, Perry Lambert, will be entertaining us during the program. We hope you will honor Father with a greeting in the program book and your presence at the dinner. With your generosity to our fundraisers, Philoptohos will be able to continue her philanthropic endeavors to help the sick and those in need, as well as our own St. Sophia Cathedral. We hope to see you on January 28th, 2012! "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus, to do good works, which God has prepared in advance for us to do". 11 MINISTRY NEWS (continued) CHOIR NEWS Saint Sophia Cathedral 14th Annual Christmas Musicfest under the Byzantine Dome "Glory to God in the Highest" TONIGHT at 7:00 p.m. The program will include Orthodox Christmas Hymns and Chants, selections from Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi, and traditional carols of the holiday season. The concert will feature Michele Patzakis Prappas and Genna Ambatielos Yaitanes as soloists, the Saint Sophia Cathedral Choir and Chamber Ensemble under the direction of Jim H. Kollias, and the Harmonies of Saint Thomas All Girls Choir, under the direction of Antonio Espinal. Freewill offering. Reception immediately following the concert. 11

12 MINISTRY NEWS (continued) PHILANTHROPIA MINISTRY NEWS The following are some scheduled projects, past and future: NAMI WALKS National Alliance on Mental Illness: We sponsored walkers. Look for follow-up pictures and an article in the forthcoming Fall issue of Philanthropia. 27 th AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES: We also sponsored walkers. Pictures and an article in the forthcoming Fall issue of Philanthropia. LOS ANGELES MISSION: Philanthropia partnered with Saint Sophia Philoptohos to collect plain coffee and plain cereal needed at the L.A. Mission. It was a success. Thank you to everyone who contributed. CITY OF HOPE PEDIATRIC MEMORIAL BOOKLET: This is now our 9 th year sponsoring the Memorial Service and Booklet for the City of Hope Medical Center Pediatric Unit, which took place on Thursday November 10 th. Our liaison, Dr. Randi McAllister, on the Pediatric staff, together with a team of doctors and nurses, hosts the parents and families to remember their children who were victims to cancer. Each parent and family have a page dedicated to their child with pictures, love notes, poems, etc.; a way of helping the family deal with the loss of the child. Please mail your donations to the Philanthropia Inc Crebs Ave. Tarzana, As always, thank you so much for your concern and support. ANNUAL APPEAL LETTER & INFORMATION: In addition to our regular projects, we have a full Agenda to help those in need for the holidays. Thank you in advance for your love and support. USED CLOTHING and CANNED GOODS: Please identify all clothing donations on the outside of the bags by indicating whether they are for men, women or children.
