8 EPISTLE READING Let Us Be Attentive.. Verse: O Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance. To You, O Lord, have I cried, O my God. Wisdom.. The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15 Let us be Attentive.. Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believed, and so we speak, knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into His presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God 8

9 GOSPEL READING The Reading is from Luke 5:1-11 At that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him 9

11 MINISTRY NEWS PHILOPTOHOS NEWS AN EVENING WITH FRIENDS DINNER On Saturday, January 28, 2012 we will be honoring Reverend Father Peter V. Lambert, in our new Community Center! More details, invitations and solicitation letters for the program book, will be forthcoming. Father Lambert has been working in philanthropic groups since the 1960's, and has been the Director of the Philanthropia group for more than 12 years. Father is still very active as he helps counsel people, speaks at numerous hospitals and groups on HIV/AIDS, collects food and clothing for the shelters around our church, and much more. We truly hope you will join us to honor such a wonderful man. Your generous support of our program book and dinner will help Philoptohos continue the work that we do. "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do". Ephesians 2:10. The mission is rich in the history and traditions of early California. We will visit the Mission Church, the museum, the beautiful grounds and garden. Then we ll go to lunch at Twohey s restaurant, which will include 2 choices: (1) Turkey Sandwich and fries, (2) Cheeseburger and fries. Both choices will include a drink, coffee, and dessert. After lunch we will continue on to visit St. Steven s Serbian Orthodox Church in Alhambra. Cost of the trip is $30 per person which includes bus transportation, mission entry and lunch. 12 MINISTRY NEWS (continued) PHILANTHROPIA MINISTRY NEWS PHILANTHROPIA TEAM BOARD MEETING: Coming up on Sunday, October 30 th, we will have our annual meeting, immediately following Divine Liturgy. A specific time and place on the church grounds will be forthcoming. Please plan to attend this very important meeting. Thank you. As we begin the new year, the following are some scheduled projects: NAMI WALKS National Alliance on Mental Illness: On October 1, 2011 we will be sponsoring walkers. Please check out their website at infor@nami.org 27 th AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES: We are sponsoring a walker for further information, please contact Barbara Kappos at bkappos@aol.com LOS ANGELES MISSION: Philanthropia is partnering with Philoptohos to collect plain coffee and cereal needed at the L.A. Mission. Details as to where to deposit donations will be forthcoming. CITY OF HOPE PEDIATRIC MEMORIAL BOOKLET: This is now our 9 th year sponsoring the Memorial Service and Booklet for the City of Hope Medical Center Pediatric Unit. Our liaison, Dr. Randi McAllister, on the Pediatric staff, together with a team of doctors and nurses, host the parents and families to remember their children who were victims to cancer. Each parent and family have a page dedicated to their child with pictures, love notes, poems, etc.; a way of helping the family deal with the loss of the child. Please mail your donations to the Philanthropia Inc Crebs Ave. Tarzana, As always, thank you so much for your concern and support. USED CLOTHING and CANNED GOODS: Please identify all clothing donations on the outside of the bags by indicating whether they are for men, women or children. 17 COMMUNITY NEWS (continued) SAINT SOPHIA CAMP ANNIVERSARY - INVITATION On Friday, October 14, 2011 we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Saint Sophia Camp at our annual Golf Tournament Banquet and Awards dinner. We invite all the former Mr. and Mrs. Club Members instrumental in starting our camping program, all the former camp committee chairmen, former camp directors, staff, and counselors who have participated in our program throughout the years, to join us for this special event. The Golf Tournament will take place during the day at the Montebello Golf Course with the banquet dinner following at the clubhouse at 5:00 pm. (please see flyer on page 16) Dinner is $40/person, but is included if one is playing golf in the tournament.
