3 MINISTRY NEWS MEASURING UP! LENTEN RETREAT MARCH 22ND W/ FR. BARNABAS POWELL Orthodoxy: Our Great Challenge Our Greater Opportunity. This retreat is open to all who seek to deepen their understanding and commitment to the mission of the Church. The guest speaker, Father Barnabas Powell has gained notoriety as a prolific preacher and effective teacher of leadership in the Orthodox faith. Leaders and teachers of Saint Sophia ministries are all urged to attend in order to increase the effectiveness of all our activities. 9:30am Morning Prayer 10:00am Coffee & Pastries in the Gianopulos Family Theater 10:15am Multi-media presentation by Fr. 4 PHILOPTOHOS NEWS OUR NEXT MEETING has been changed to Sunday, March 30th after liturgy in the General Assembly meeting room of the Huffington Center. Please make a note of it on your calendars. Andrea Bakas will be making a presentation to us on medical missions to Honduras that she is involved in. Lunch will be available. We hope you will join us. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGENCY SPRING PROJECT: Our yearly collection of socks, under garments and plain t- shirts for women and children who are victims of domestic violence is going to start up in March at our meeting on the 30th. Please start picking up new packages of items when you see them - perhaps on sale - and bring them to the meeting. Assorted sizes are fine. The renewal of life and the earth comes with spring and the Resurrection of our Lord at Easter time. As our Lord came into the world to save us, we need to show these women and children that they are notforgotten and we want to help them. We may not be able to save everyone but Philoptohos brings hope to those who are hurting and struggling, to let them know that someone cares about them. MEMBERSHIP TIME IS HERE! The membership cards and forms are in the mail and we hope you will join Philoptohos! Attend our meetings, join and work on our projects and fundraising efforts. We need your support to continue our outreach efforts to those who need help. Look for the beautiful Philoptohos angel on the membership card. COMMUNION WINE NEEDED The Church exists as a community of individuals coming together and offering their time, talents, and treasures. One of the most sacred gifts to offer the Lord in the Church is the wine for Holy Communion. Saint Sophia Cathedral uses KEO s Commandaria St. John which can be purchased across the street at Papa Cristos Greek market. The Altar is running low on this wine. Wine offerings may be submitted in honor or in memory of your loved ones. Bring the wine and names to Jimmy in the Narthex or to the church office Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm. 5

JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ORATORICAL FESTIVAL SUNDAY MARCH 2ND Introduced in 1983, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival provides Greek Orthodox teenagers the opportunity to learn to write and talk about their faith. The Oratorical Festival Program begins at the parish level and is divided into three divisions: Elementary Division (local festival only) for students in grades 4 6 Junior Division for students in grades 7 9 Senior Division for student in grades The top speakers in the Junior and Senior Divisions advance to the district level. Two finalists in each district division represent the district at the Metropolis Oratorical Festival. The top speaker in each metropolis division is then selected to participate in the Archdiocese Finals, which is hosted by a different metropolis each year. Join your fellow parishioners in a lively discussion of parenting children of all ages: from toddlers to teens and beyond. Topic on Feb. 23: "When to Push and When to Hold Back." Classes are held in the Work/Study Room in the Huffington Center, upstairs near the left-hand side staircase, immediately following Holy Communion and concluding at 12:15. Come with your concerns and questions or just listen; there is no pressure to speak to the class. It's a wonderful way to get acquainted with other parents. There is no fee to attend. The Joy of Parenting Ministry is facilitated by Barbara Kappos, LCSW and Nikolaos Stefanidis, Ph.D. Feb. 23: "When to Push and When to Hold Back."
