YOUNG PEOPLE - LEARN BYZANTINE CHANT! Our assistant chanter, Michael Kontaxis will be offering simple instruction and easy to learn Byzantine music to youngsters from ages 8 to all who are young at heart. If your youngsters are interested (please encourage them) call our office and sign up. The future of our liturgical services must be preserved by our youth. All will not only learn to chant but also learn the beautiful spiritual meaning behind the hymns. Please get involved. 2

4 Ω Ο Ν Inner Stillness Meditation Center Wellness and Spirituality A monthly eight-session Inner Stillness Meditation workshop at the Huffington Center of Saint Sophia cathedral, 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, presented by Maria Baltazzi and V. Rev. Fr. John Bakas Each session covers a specific topic. The next session on March 7, 2016 is about gratitude. The talks are based on Orthodox Spirituality and Maria s studies in the field of Wellness and Happiness. There will be group exercises to highlight the week's talk, along with the discussion of the topic. We will be closing with a group Prayer of the Heart meditation to discover how Inner Stillness Meditation can benefit the participants and the world around them. 5 Science and Orthodox Spirituality as Integral Aspects of a Unified World Lecture 2:Three Natural Laws at the Huffington Center of Saint Sophia Cathedral, Wednesday, March 9, 2016, 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm Price: $20. Dinner buffet and refreshments served at 6:30 pm presented by Dr. Menas C. Kafatos, V. Rev. Fr. John Bakas and Maria Baltazzi How can the experience of Inner Peace and Love of Orthodox Spirituality can be scientifically described? How can science, while retaining its objectivity and present day success, accept the inner realms? This is a true dialogue between the two great systems of human experience Science and Spirituality. Orthodox Christians worship the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - the Holy Trinity, the one God. The Trinity is three divine persons, who share one essence. It is paradoxical to believe thus, but that is how God has revealed himself. Man also has three natures. Both man and woman have three parts: body, soul, and spirit. God the Son is comparable to the body since the Son is God incarnate. God the Father is comparable to the soul, or mind, since he was the mind that created everything. The Holy Spirit is comparable to man's Spirit. The triadic nature of Reality, Being, Awareness and Completeness, parallels the Holy Trinity. Spiritual, emotional and mental well-being can be achieved through guided meditation with The Prayer of the Heart that will also result in relaxation, improving your focus and reducing stress. This also triadic path to physical, mental and spiritual wellness involves meditation, prayer, and group exercises that support and maintain your inner well-being building blocks. 8 Saint Sophia Foundation Scholarships John S. Sakellaris Scholarship - (for College/Post-Graduate Students) Angelo L. Pappas Scholarship - (for Graduating High School Seniors) The Saint Sophia Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the creation of four $2,500 scholarships for eligible students within our community. These scholarships are offered to a graduating high school and college or post-graduate students. We have increased the amount and number of scholarships this year. These scholarships are in honor of two of the greatest leaders of our community from the San Julian church, to the founding of our Saint Sophia community up through the Community Campaign for Building Expansion. John and Angelo were true leaders, visionaries and stalwart servants on behalf of Saint Sophia Cathedral and its community. They were also the best of friends. 10 PHILOPTOHOS Please join us for our GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING Thursday, March 17th at 10:30am in the Huffington Center. Our Guest Speaker is from our next door neighbor, Saint Thomas Church, who will speak and educate us about their food bank and outreach serving the area poor providing food and supplies to those unable to afford them. On Good Friday during the youth retreat, the food and supplies are delivered to Saint Thomas by our Sunday School students. This year Philoptohos will be helping with this Cross-Generational Project. Please come learn more and how you can help. We will also be discussing all of our other outreach for the year. Chef Ourania will be catering a Lenten Lunch of Stuffed Tomatoes and Peppers, Salad, and Lenten Cake for a $10.00 donation at the door. Everyone is welcome men and women alike! Please call Dorothea Ales ( ) for reservations for lunch. Sunday, April 10 th - Kids N Cancer event at the Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach. This is a wonderful afternoon to join your Philoptohos sisters, husbands and friends while supporting children afflicted with cancer or other life-threatening diseases. 13 2016 GREEK ORTHODOX BASKETBALL LEAGUE SEASON SCHEDULE It's time for St Sophia basketball! Here is our schedule of games for our Green Machine teams! Please note, there are only two youth teams this year for St. Sophia, the Jr. Boys and Sr. Boys. We also have our Young Adult Team as well. In addition to our two youth teams the league is introducing the "JOY division" consisting of coed players ranging in ages from 8-11 yrs. old. The JOY players would participate in a casual 30-min game prior to the start of the youth games.
