3 PHILOPTOHOS NEWS Our first Philoptohos general assembly meeting will be on September 21 after liturgy. Our speaker will be Dr. Eve Tibbs, speaking on Beauty and Truth: How to Read Icons. Please join us! We ll have lunch and a report from the National Convention. If you have not been to a Philoptohos meeting we encourage you to come and meet us. We know not everyone has time to attend a meeting or work on a committee, but if you have a chance to come by we would love to meet you. EVERYONE is welcome to attend! You don t need to be a member to attend the meeting. Philoptohos looks forward to meeting new people who are ready to join in the work. We have wonderful fellowship and friendships as we work together. STUFFED ANIMAL COLLECTION: During the month of September, we will be accepting donations of NEW STUFFED ANIMALS or SOFT cuddly blankets that will be donated to children undergoing cancer treatments at California Hospital. Please - Do not bring us used blankets or stuffed animals, the items should be NEW. This project started in memory of Ileana Shuman, who died of brain cancer at the age of 6. Ileana was the niece of our Board member Allison Stavaridis. If you bring your donation to the September 21 meeting your lunch will be free! If you cannot join us, please drop your donation off in a bag at the Narthex of the church and mark it for Philoptohos. Thank you. HOLY CROSS SEMINARY: On Sunday, September 21, Philoptohos must pass a tray for our commitment to Holy Cross Seminary. All money collected is for the seminary, not for Philoptohos. If you wish to make a donation for the seminary please be sure to have it at church on that day or you can mail it to Philoptohos in care of the Cathedral. 2 CONTINUED

4 PHILOPTOHOS NEWS CHRISTMAS CANDY: Philoptohos is preparing an order form for See s holiday candy for Christmas. We will be selling 1 lb. boxes of Assorted Chocolates, Nuts and Chews, a children s Christmas box, plus large chocolate Santas. The order form should be ready for the October Herald and you may pre-order your items by sending the form with a check to Philoptohos Treasurer, Scarlett Billis. All information will be on the order form. The money we raise will be given to the Metropolis Philoptohos as our donation to the Bishop Anthony Student Aid Endowment Fund. This fund raises money to help our future priests at the seminary. L.A. MISSION BACKPACK TOTALS Philoptohos would like to update all of you on the totals from the Backpack Luncheon held on August 17th: Donations to the Mission in cash or checks, totaled $609! There were 58 new backpacks and over 54 pounds of school supplies, everything from notebook paper, calculators, pens, glue sticks, notebooks and binders! THANK YOU! The Mission sent us a wonderful thank you letter and wanted everyone to know how much it was all appreciated. This really shows what we can do as a community to help others! 5 THE ART OF THE GREEK DANCE SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday School Registration and Ice Cream Social will be on Sunday, September 14th after Liturgy. Sunday school will begin on September 21st. 4

ALLAN BOYD This class is for you if you would like to deepen your understanding and practice of the Orthodox Christian Faith. All are welcome! Classes are every Monday at 7:30 PM. There will be no class tomorrow September 8th. LIFE IN FAITH STUDIES WITH FR. JOHN BAKAS Increase your knowledge about our faith at our weekly Bible study class. You'll have a chance to ask Fr. John questions and engage in interesting discussions with your fellow parishioners in a casual setting. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to grow in your faith. Women s Faith Studies classes will resume Monday, September 15, at 11:00 am. Men s Faith Studies classes will resume Wednesday, September 17, at 11:00 am. OLD TESTAMENT WITH FR.
