2 Sacramental Preparation Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 12noon. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at , ext or by at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. Please notify the parish office of any changes in phone number, address, address or when leaving the parish. 2 GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH FINANCIAL CORNER Collection Report 3/31/2019 Weekly $4, Restoration and Repairs $2, Monthly Operating Income & Expense February 2019 Collection Income $ 20, Other Income $ 12,528,75 Total Income $ 32, Expenses $ 34, Month's Income/(Deficit) $ (1,853.56) Year-to-Date (Jul '18 - February 19) Income/(Deficit) $ (19,005.69) Outstanding Diocesan Debt $ 66, Our Good Shepherd ROSARY PROGRAM In the second week period ending March 23/24, we said 356, totaling 767 Rosaries. 3 As I do every year on the Fifth Sunday of Lent, my traditional start: prepare to hit warp speed, spiritually. Lent V: Passion Sunday Many of us remember when this Fifth Sunday of Lent was referred to as Passion Sunday Although no account of the Passion was ever read at Mass that day, it was the one Sunday of the year that made a visible hit for us, as all the statues in church are covered in purple and will remain so until Holy Saturday. This tradition comes from the Gospel account of Jesus hiding Himself in the Temple when His adversaries tried to arrest Him. We are now just one week away from Holy Week, the central week of the entire Church Year. While it is a busy week around the parish with extra liturgies and a lot more decorating and undecorating and redecorating than takes place at Christmas, it is the one week of the year that I enjoy the most. So clear your calendars now and take the time to enrich your faith with the glorious liturgies of Holy Week. The Complete Holy Week and Easter Schedule is in today s bulletin. And We re Off: Living Stations/Mary s Way of the Cross: Last year, you may remember that we had a lot of snowfalls that caused us to cancel the practices for the Living Stations of the Cross, which we traditionally held on the Friday before Palm Sunday. We made the decision then to flip the two weeks: to pray Mary s Way of the Cross which we had been doing on Good Friday to the Friday before Palm Sunday, and the Living Stations to the evening of Good Friday. The response to holding the Living Stations on Good Friday was overwhelmingly positive, and we all felt it was the perfect way to end Good Friday. So we re doing that again this year. This coming Friday, April 12 th, we will pray Mary s Way of the Cross and hold the Living Stations on Good Friday, April 19 th. Mary s Way of the Cross, is a very moving (and for many, tear-jerking) version of the Stations, seeing each Station through the eyes of the Blessed Mother. If you ve never been to it, please join us this year. Soup and Bread Dinner: This Friday will be the final Soup and Bread dinner before Stations for this Lent, beginning at 6:00 PM in Msgr. Gambino Hall. Again, a word of thanks to all who cooked these past few weeks for us, and to our students who volunteered to serve the dinner. Your donations will be added to the total of our Operation Rice Bowl offerings for Catholic Relief Services. Last Call for Confessions: Confessions will be heard this week following the 7:00 PM Mass on Monday April 8th and this Saturday April 13th from 11:30-12:00 Noon ON- LY. There will be NO Confessions before the 4:30 Mass next Saturday so we can make our final preparations for the Palm Sunday Vigil Mass, and there will be no Confessions on Holy Saturday, April 20 th. Children s Palm Procession: We invite all children to participate in the Great Procession at the 11:00 AM Solemn Mass next Sunday. Children will gather in front of the front pews just before Mass begins, be given a palm branch and will then follow the Altar Servers and ministers as we process through the church singing the traditional hymn, All Glory, Laud and Honor, following which they will be directed back to their seats. Attention All Altar Servers: If you have not yet done so, please see me this weekend regarding scheduling for the Holy Week liturgies. There will be brief rehearsals for the 11:00 AM Palm Sunday Mass (on Sunday, 4/14 at 10:15 AM), Holy Thursday (6:00 PM on Thursday, 4/18) Good Friday (2:00 PM on Friday, 4/19), Holy Saturday (12:30 PM on Saturday, 4/20.) As always, I can use extra servers for these Masses, and attendance at rehearsals is essential as the Holy Week Masses are a bit different from regular Sundays. Incense Alert #1: As the liturgies of Holy Week are a bit more solemn than usual, incense will be used at the 11:00 Mass next weekend, as well as on Holy Thursday and all the Easter Masses. Easter Baskets: All the tags were taken 165 of them! Hopefully we ll see 165 baskets today! PLEASE remember that TODAY, April 7 th is the LAST day for making returns. Thank You for helping to make a bright Easter for a needy child! Bulletin Deadlines: With Holy Week and Easter upon us, so are bulletin deadlines. All information for next Sunday s bulletin was due this past Friday. Information for the Easter Sunday bulletin is due by 12:00 Noon this Friday, April 12 th, and all information for the April 28 th bulletin is due by 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, April 17 th. Mass attendance on March 30/31 was 534. We re now entering the last full week of Lent may it be a prayerful week of preparation for us all as we get ready to enter into Holy Week. Please especially remember to pray for all those preparing for the Easter Sacraments, especially those of our parish family. Fr. Mike 3 For the month of April pray for our brave soldiers & their families, those in nursing homes, and the sick and homebound of our Parish family, especially: Carlos Bendrell, Marie Burke, Andrea Costantino, Noah Dahlberg, Carolyn Duane, Pat Dunn, Chuck F., Tommy Fitzpatrick, Joseph Frisbe, Mike Gaffney, Carol George, Richard Hajzer, Nancy Hunt, Tommy Jones, Bill Karvalis, Arleen Kopin, Charles Lawlor, Judy Liik, Megan Ortega, Carol Magyar, JoAnn Magyar, Raymond Magyar, Ellen Malopolski, Maryanne Mateuszczyk, Connie & Vince Montuoro, Fr. 5 2019 Bishop s Annual Appeal Help Build a Civilization of Love To date, the Development Office has received pledges totaling $17, and payments totaling $14, from 114 parishioners. This represents 73.5% of our $24, goal. Thank you for your efforts!!! LENTEN INSTRUCTIONS-2019 So that the Diocese of Metuchen may be spiritually one in a common observance of Lent, the following days of fast and abstinence are to be observed by all Catholics of the Diocese who enjoy the blessings of good health: 1. The days of fast and abstinence are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 2. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. 3. From the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday until the celebration of the Easter Vigil on the evening of Holy Saturday, the Easter fast should be observed so that, with uplifted and welcoming hearts, we may be ready to celebrate the joys of the Resurrection. This ancient tradition, intimately connected with the Rites of Holy Week and the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, is encouraged, especially in those places baptizing catechumens at the Easter Vigil. The obligation to fast applies only to Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. To fast in the Catholic tradition means to limit oneself to one full meal during the day so as to experience hunger. The obligation of abstinence affects all Catholics who have reached the age of 14. Abstinence in the Catholic tradition means to abstain from meat and all meat products. The obligation of fast and abstinence, as a whole, is a serious obligation. While failure to observe any penitential day in itself may not be considered serious, the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of them without good cause, would be considered a grave matter. Those unable to abstain for a valid reason on any given Friday of Lent are asked to perform some other penitential act, or to abstain on another day. 11 Day Classic Austria & Germany September 22-October 2, 2020 Visiting Heidelberg, Rhine Valley, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Vienna, Munich & Rothenburg If you have an interest in joining us on this trip we recommend that you contact us ASAP! All Christians are called to be Intercessory. All Christians have the Holy Spirit in their hearts and, just as Christ intercedes for us in accordance with God s will (Romans 8:26-27), we are to intercede for one another. Nothing is too small to request from our Lord, Jesus. Nothing is insignificant to him. At the Good Shepherd Parish our Children have embarked on a mission of Intercessory Prayer by praying nightly at 9:00 pm. We have been conducting classes on Intercessory prayers so that our youth are prepared to be Intercessors. Weekly they are presented with the prayer requests from parishioners. We pray and then they go forth with their mission work. Some of the benefits of the Intercessory Prayers: It increases God s Protection. It strengthens us to do what God is calling us to do. It removes feelings of aloneness. It builds our relationship with God and increases our faith. If you wish to join or be added to the prayer list, please contact Mrs. Mildred Padilla-Morales at Holy Water Bottles We currently have holy water bottles available for a small donation.
