2 Sacramental Preparation Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 9:45 AM. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at , ext or by at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. 3 A Letter FROM OUR PASTOR: A whole lot going on here. Good Shepherd Sunday, Our Feast of Title - Happy Feast Day! The Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday, as the Gospel that day is traditionally one of the shepherd Gospels. So with that, Happy Feast Day! It is hard to believe that almost five years have now passed since we became Good Shepherd Parish, yet that anniversary date is coming up quickly! It is, for me, a time to reflect on all the blessings that we have received over these five years, while acknowledging the challenges that we have faced. In and through it all, Jesus, the Good Shepherd, has been with us. He has NOT abandoned us to our own devices, but rather has called us to greater faithfulness. So first and foremost, let me thank all of you for your continued support and prayers as we make this journey of faith together, for your involvement in the life of our parish. A LOT of good things have taken place these past five years and more will still happen as long as we keep our eyes focused on the Good Shepherd, hearing His voice, giving Him our hearts! Looking into the Future (both short term and long term): With our five year anniversary coming up quickly, we will celebrate that at our annual Parish Picnic. We re planning to have the picnic on Sunday, July 23 rd after the Mass, and, as we did last year, to have it right here on the church grounds. It seemed to work out pretty well last year, we didn t have to rent out space at one of the county parks, and as far as I could tell, everyone had a good time! Another thing that I will be working to reestablish this Summer is our Parish Pastoral Council. The previous Council served as a point of transition at the time of the merger, and helped oversee the transition from two parishes to one. As time went on, the Finance Council took a more active role in the overseeing of the routine stuff of parish life, mostly in regards to the financial situation of the parish. However, I feel that a strong working Council can benefit all aspects of parish life spiritual, social and financial. This month I will be researching this a bit more in depth, and will have more information later this month it s my hope to have the new Council up and running by July 1 st, the 5 th Anniversary of the parish. Finally - at our last Finance Committee meeting, it was brought up that 2020 will mark the 50 th Anniversary of the dedication of our building, and 2019 would be the 75 th Anniversary of the creation of Holy Spirit Parish. It s my hope that these two milestones can be marked with special celebrations, so I will also be creating a special Anniversaries Committee to oversee that celebration, beginning in May, 2019 and ending on Sunday, May 24, 2020, which is the actual 50 th Anniversary of the dedication of this building. Again, more details on all of these will be forthcoming in the coming weeks (And I thought I was going to have a quiet Summer!) World Day of Prayer for Vocations: The Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally marked as the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. It s a day for each of us to pray for an increase in vocations, especially in our Diocese. Over the years, we have been blessed to see many young men come to our parish when the House of Discernment was here. Some of them are now priests in our Diocese, others have felt that God is calling them to serve in other ways. And, happily we have a home grown vocation and at least two other young men from our parish have spoken to me about the possibility of the priesthood. IN addition, over the years, we ve had a good number of young women enter religious life, especially the Religious Teachers Filippini in fact, this weekend marks the 75 th Anniversary of Sister Helen Rado s entry into that community! This weekend, please r emember to pray for all our seminar i- ans, for an increase in vocations, especially in our Diocese, and in thanksgiving for the priests and Religious who have served our parish over the years! Tis The Month of Our Mother At the 11:00 AM Mass today we will hold the traditional ceremonies to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. This year it s even bigger as this Saturday, May 13 th is the 100 th Anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady to the three shepherd children in Fatima a day that will be marked with Pope Francis visit to Fatima and the Canonization to Sainthood of the two youngest, Blessed Francisco and Jacinta Marto. There will be special celebrations next weekend at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Washington, NJ brochures are available at the church entrances with more information. Even more reason to honor Our Lady this month! Don t forget that the Rosary is said every day before 8:00 AM Mass, and before the 8:30 Mass every Sunday. That was one of the primary requests Our Lady made at Fatima Pray The Rosary! Mass attendance for April 29/30 was 570. Have a great week ahead, Fr. Mike For the month of May pray for those who need the support of this community of faith: Beryl Behr, Carlos Bendrell, Noah Dahlberg, Pat Dunn, Rose Celecki, Andrea Costantino, Chuck F., Mike Gaffney, Carol George, Richard Hajzer, Carol Magyar, Lynn Munoz, Dianne Petro-Duncan, Megan Ortega, JoAnn Magyar, Raymond Magyar, Danny Parker, Mary Murray, Catherine Paone, Christopher Paone, Ann Poznick, Stephen Pry, Caroline Pry, Allen Puleio, Greg Rohrbacher,Telofski Family, Dave Utter, Elsie Vega & Russell Ziemba With respect to personal privacy only requests made by immediate family members will be taken. If you would like to add or continue to keep a name on our list: call the parish office at or Goodshepherd20@verizon.net. 3 Please keep in mind that we pray for all the sick every day in the general intercessions of the Mass.
