MARRIAGES: Parishioners arrangements must be made at least six months prior to the ceremony and before arranging the social plans. DEVOTION: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament takes place on First Friday, immediately following the 9:00 am Mass until 10:30am.

Today we hear of three people who were called: Isaiah, Simon Peter and Paul. Each situation was different, but what they had in common was feeling inadequate to the call. In this year focusing on mercy, we realize that we, too, are recipients of God s mercy. We may feel inadequate, but we are all worthy in God s merciful eyes. THE READINGS ISAIAH 6:1-2a, 3-8: Isaiah feels unworthy of his calling. 1CORINTHIANS 15:1-11: Paul calls himself the least of the apostles. Peter s Desk Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: We begin our preparations for Lent, which begins on Wednesday, with the customary imposition of Ashes (Ash Wednesday). This sacred tradition of placing ashes burned from last years Palms on our foreheads, signifies the beginning of our period of Lenten devotion and fasting. Liturgically we give up things as well. We do not sing or recite the Gloria, our joyful song of praise, except on the Solemnities of St. Joseph and the Annunciation of the Lord during Lent. We also give up the Alleluia, without any exception at all. Our altar becomes stark in contrast to its normal flowery look and our altar cloths turn from green to violet. Yet, though a time of penance and soul-searching, Lent is also a time of expectation, a journey through the Paschal Mystery culminating in the glorious Easter Sunday celebration. Our Ash Wednesday imposition of Ashes will take place at the two masses that will be said at 9:00AM and then again at 7:00PM. Simple rules of Abstinence and Fasting during Lent: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Abstinence and Fasting. All Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. Abstinence simply means refraining from eating meat and poultry. Fasting simply means eating only one normal meal and then two smaller meals during the day that would equal on normal meal. Of course, this does not apply to anyone who has a medical condition preventing this devotion or to people 59 years of age or older. These devotions are, in essence, a spiritual exercise as we become more conscious of the need to turn the mind toward those realities which really count and join in solidarity with the poor and needy. God Bless You Always, Fr. Peter STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection In today s readings, both Isaiah and Peter hear the call of God and feel themselves unworthy. But, reassured by the Lord, both answer and follow. Do I hear the Lord asking, Whom shall I send? Am I prepared to answer Here I am. Send me!? Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who respond to God s generosity in their own lives by being generous to the poor, feeding the hungry and consoling the sorrowful, both within our parish and outward to the wider community. Peter Church in Need Collection On February 14, 2016 a collection will be taken for The Church in Need. The monies collected at this time will be shared among three areas of the world where there is particular need for help: Church in Central and Eastern Europe-the Collection provides support for basic pastoral programs and makes scholarships available for students studying to serve their local church. These students become vital participants in the renewal of the Church in the region. The Church in Latin America faces many difficult challenges. Natural disasters in many areas caused lasting damage to the Church, while a significant loss of parishioners to migration and to other faiths, the inability to support itself financially, and a lack of priests and religious to help effectively minister to the large number of Catholics continue to trouble the region. The Church in Africa-the funds will go to assisting African countries where poverty, sickness and political strife prevent people from living in dignity. Thank you for your generosity. McGann-Mercy Principal s Dinner The McGann-Mercy Principal s Dinner will be held on Saturday, February 27th at 6:00PM at Giorgio s Baiting Hollow. The Bread & Wine offered at the Sacrifice of the Mass during the month of February were given in Loving Memory of Nancy McCann from Lynn & Peter Donohue. Parish Memorials St. Andrew s offers different types of memorials, which can be donated in memory of deceased family members or friends, or for the intentions of living individuals for special occasions.
