3 JULY 28/29, 2012 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr. Peter s Desk 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family, Today s readings invite us to become humble instruments in God s hands by sharing our blessings with our needy brothers and sisters. Miracles can happen through our hands, when we collect and distribute to the needy the food destined for all by our generous God. Today s readings also remind us that if we have been blessed with an abundance of earthly bread or with the technical capabilities to produce such an abundance, then these gifts are for sharing with the hungry. When physical hungers are satisfied, then we are challenged to satisfy the deeper hungers for love, mercy, forgiveness, companionship, peace and fulfillment. The first reading tells us how the prophet Elisha, by invoking God s power, fed one hundred men with twenty barley loaves. This miracle foreshadowed the gospel account of Jesus miraculous feeding of the crowd who followed him to hear his words. The miraculous feeding of the five thousand people by Jesus, with five barley loaves and two fish, as described in today s gospel, is associated in Church tradition with the HOLY Eucharist. John s version of the miracle clearly heightens the Eucharistic allusions when we read it along with the miraculous feeding of 100 men by the prophet Elisha in today s first reading. But alike Elisha, Jesus himself assumed the divine role, feeding the people with eschatological plenty. The reaction of the people was immediate and unanimous, they interpreted the miracle as a messianic sign and gave Jesus two Messianic titles: The prophet and the one who is to come. This miracle teaches us that God works marvels through ordinary people. Elisha s servant and Jesus disciples distributed the bread, provided by God. Thus, God meets the needs of the people through the services provided by the members of His community. God Bless you all. Fr. Peter Seminary of the Immaculate Conception Seminary of the Immaculate Conception offers the following graduate degrees Master of Arts in Theology, Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies. Fall Semester begins September 6, For further information contact: Academic Office, 440 West Neck Road, Huntington, NY 11743, (631) X147 Or visit the website- STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection The hand of the Lord feeds us, says the Psalmist, he answers all our needs. Both Elisha s servant in the first reading and the disciples in the gospel story who witnessed the feeding of the five thousand saw this happen and knew it to be true. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who feed the hungry through such efforts as St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, Long Island Cares, Harry Chapin Food Bank and our own community pantry! 4 Faith Direct If you have found egiving through Faith Direct to be a convenient way to send your generous gifts to our parish, I hope you ll recommend the program to others at our parish who may not yet realize how easy the Faith Direct program is to use and how much egiving can help our parish stay on budget-especially during these travel filled summer months. Enrollment in the program is simple: Either go online to and use our parish code NY296 or pick up an enrollment form from the parish office and return it by mail to Faith Direct. Thank you for your continued support of St. Andrew Catholic Church both through Faith Direct and with your invaluable time and talents! Fr. Peter Religious Education Team Do you have a strong desire to share your faith? Do you feel that God is calling you in a special way to step out of your comfort zone? Perhaps you might consider joining our Religious Education team. We are looking for volunteers in the lower grades to help our children grow in love and faith. Please speak with Fr. Peter or Fr. Manuel if you are interested in joining our team. 15th Annual Birthright Walk for Life The 15th Annual Birthright Walk for Life will be held on Saturday, October 6th, 2012 at Indian Island Park, Route 105, Riverhead, NY. Please come and walk with us for life. Birthright is a non -profit organization staffed by volunteers, and offers counseling, assistance, parenting classes, referrals for medical care and adoption, and positive alternatives to abortion. Volunteers will be outside the Church after every Mass next week on Saturday and Sunday, for donations and to sign up walkers and sponsors for the 15th Annual twomile Walkathon. Birthright s guiding principal: It is the right of every pregnant woman to give birth and the right of every child to be born. For further information please call Catholic Ministries Appeal St. Andrew s parish is currently at 47% of goal. Please help us make goal and earn our full rebate!

5 UPCOMING EVENTS Please see the future bulletins for more information on the upcoming events. The Altar Flowers for the week of July 29th were given in Loving Memory of Moloney & Galvin Families from Noel & Liz Moloney Sponsoring The Altar Flowers Sponsoring the Altar Flowers as a memorial is a beautiful way to mark the importance of a loved one in your life. It can also be a unique way of honoring someone special, recognizing a Birthday or an Anniversary, or simply for a prayer intention. We have several weekends available in the next few months. Please call or stop by the parish office if interested. Thank you. Religious Education For the upcoming Religious Education year ( ) we are amending our Confirmation program. The program will now include a 3 year attendance requirement. The candidate must attend 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes as well as completing all lesson assignments, etc. in order to be considered for Confirmation. For anyone coming into the 7th grade without 6th grade, remedial homework will be required to be completed and returned to the Coordinator by December 15th. A meeting with the Pastor will then determine if your child can continue in the 7th grade or go back into 6th. This option will only be offered for this school year. Our reason for this is simple: when a child does not continue with their religious education after receiving First Communion, returning in 7th grade leaves them at a tremendous disadvantage. They have limited or no knowledge of the faith they are claiming as their own. We owe our children more.
