This week the candle is flickering in memory of Tony Colagiovanni. The Tabernacle Lamp is available as a Memorial for a $5 donation per week. We welcome all who gather here to worship with us. You enter this House of God, our Father, not as a stranger but as His child. Come into your Father s presence with joy in your heart and thanks on your lips, offering your love, devotion and service. Be grateful to all who came before you who, in the Name of Jesus Christ, built this place of worship, and to all those who have beautified and made holy this sacred space with their prayers, praise and financial sacrifices throughout the years. Ask God s blessing on all who love and cherish all places of faith. May that blessing come back to rest upon you, in your going out and your coming in. Prayer for Memorial Day As we celebrate Memorial Day on May 28 th let us remember to pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the examples of their sacrifice inspire in us the selfless love of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us ask the Lord to bless the families of our fallen troops, and fill their homes and lives with your strength and peace. Parents can begin to prepare for the Sacrament of Baptism for their child even before their child is born. Godparents must be confirmed and obtain a Sponsor Certificate from their own Catholic parish. The date of the Baptism is scheduled after attending the Parent Preparation Program. Baptisms normally take place on Sundays after the 10:30am Mass. All parishioners will have the opportunity to make a pledge to the 2018 Archbishop s Annual Appeal during Mass. Your support helps the CCC connect people to Christ, here and around the world, through the internet, television, radio, and print media. 3 The Feast of Pentecost Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. It is one of the most important solemnities on the Church's calendar. It has a rich depth of meaning. In the year of 2012, this is how Pope Benedict XVI summarized it s meaning: This Solemnity makes us remember and relive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and the other disciples gathered in prayer with the Virgin Mary in the Upper Room (cf. Acts 2:1-11). Jesus, risen and ascended into Heaven, sent his Spirit to the Church so that every Christian might participate in his own divine life and become his valid witness in the world. The Holy Spirit, breaking into history, defeats aridity (lacking in interest and life), opens hearts to hope, stimulates and fosters in us an interior maturity in our relationship with God and with our neighbor. Vestments The priest wears a red vestment on Pentecost. It represents the tongues of fire that the Holy Spirit rest upon the disciples on the morning of Pentecost. He fills them with Himself. Fire symbolizes the transforming energy of the Holy Spirit's actions. Adult Confirmation Preparation Classes Are you an adult who is 18 years or older who has received the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist (Communion) but have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation and is interested in now receiving this Sacrament? You are invited to attend a series of weekly Confirmation Preparation Classes beginning on Tuesday, May 29 th at 7pm and ending on Tuesday, June 26 th to be held at Our Lady of Mercy Parish Center. Upon completion of these classes, you will be eligible to participate in the Celebration of Confirmation for Adults to be held on November 7 th, 2018, at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield with Archbishop Blair. Candidates will need to obtain their Baptism and First Holy Communion records and be registered members of a Catholic parish. If the candidate is married outside the church, the marriage must be convalidated before beginning the Adult Confirmation Classes. To register for classes or to obtain additional information, please contact Jeanne Gionfriddo at We ask that candidates donate $16.00 to cover the cost of the text that will be used for class sessions. Adopt a Planter It s not too late to adopt a planter. We are grateful to the parishioners who have come forward so far. Adopting a planter involves choosing a planter on our parish property, planting flowers in it and maintaining it through the summer months. Please contact Fr. Ray. The Visitation of the Sick and Homebound is an ongoing concern of our parish. If a member of your family is hospitalized, in a convalescent home or confined to their home due to age and sickness and would like a pastoral visit, please call the parish office or speak with Fr. Ray after a weekend Mass. Please note the anointing of the sick can be administered before your loved one is gravely ill. Registration can be completed by stopping by the parish office or completing a short registration form which can be found on our home page at under the heading New to Our Parish. Continue to do good after you ve passed. Remember Our Lady of Mercy Church In Your Last Will & Testament All Life is Precious! To celebrate the children in the womb within our community, as well as their parents and family, we will be celebrating the new Rite for the Blessing of a Child in the Womb here at Our Lady of Mercy. The celebration will take place during the 10:30am Mass on Sunday, June 10th, and includes a special blessing of the children in the womb and all those present following the homily. According to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, "Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in time of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society." 4 SELECTION PROCESS OF PASTORAL COUNCIL MEMBERS In June, four new Pastoral Council members will be selected to fill vacancies caused by members whose terms are due to expire at the end of June. Parishioners are asked to give prayerful consideration to nominating other parishioners or themselves. Self-nominations are encouraged. Nomination Forms are available in the Gathering Space. Completed Nomination Forms can be deposited in the Nomination Box that is located in the Gathering Space. The deadline for nominations is Sunday, May 27. Baptismal Gifts Our parish has the tradition of making the baptismal gowns used to clothe each new member of our parish as they are baptized. Would you like to be a part of this ministry? All abilities are needed, whether to coordinate their making, to cut the fabric, to sew, or to embroider. From homebound to 'travelers', all are invited to share their talent. For those who are able, please attend a meeting on Tuesday, May 22nd at 6:30PM in Room 102 of the Parish Center. For those interested but not able to attend, please call Sue at Thank you!
