4 P 3 This week as a parish community, we will enter into Vigil together for what I truly believe will be one of the most important things we can do as a faith community, and as brothers and sisters in Christ. We will pray for our Church, all those who have fallen away from the Church, most especially for our families and for all those dear to us. Like the holy men and women of scripture who sought out the Lord and begged Him to heal those they loved, we will pray before Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, and ask Him, to heal and bring back those who are away, and to bring hope to the hearts of all those who eagerly await the return of those they love. The power of prayer is real and the importance of this moment must not be lost. We are shutting down the entire parish during the Vigil because quite frankly, our Church, and the souls of those you love and all those who are away from the Church are far more important to this parish and to your pastor then bulletins, meetings, paying bills, and the day to day workings of parish life. If we had a natural disaster, I would not hesitate to shut down the parish to go out and rescue those in crisis and in need. On a spiritual level, the disaster and consequences faced by the Church, and by many in our families and community is every bit as real and our need for action is every bit as necessary. Thankfully, God s grace can transform all things and move even the very hearts that are farthest from Him. So, like the holy men and women of scriptures, who brought their loved ones before the Lord, we will do the same in Faith and with hope. What you need to know: The opening Vigil Mass will be Tuesday at 6:30pm at Holy Trinity. Be there! We will make sure you have a place to park and to sit, not to worry. The Mass will be beautiful and our prayers will be directed for the Church, and all those fallen away, especially those in our families. Our wonderful musicians have been working hard to make sure the music for the night will compliment the depths of our prayers with richness and beauty. At the conclusion of the Mass, and when the Blessed Sacrament is placed in the Monstrance on the Altar, we will begin a most important and beautiful part of our prayer. The congregation will be invited forward to light candles for the Church and for family members and loved ones who are away. As we process forward and light candles for sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, friends and strangers, the candles will be placed in the Sanctuary before the Lord. As we pray together and as the choir gently sings, hundreds of lights, and S / R and souls will be placed before the Lord with one prayer being offered, to bring back those who have fallen away and bring them back into the arms of God s love, mercy, and to His Church. This year we will also be adding special Gold candles to light in thanksgiving for those who have come back, and as a reminder to have hope. Is there a cost to light the candles? The candles cost the parish $3 each. We have ordered over 1,500 candles so that everyone can light the candles they wish. The collection during the Mass will be used to cover the cost of the candles and the Vigil. I would ask if you are able that you cover the cost of the candles you light and offer a little extra to help cover other costs associated with vigil and to ensure that everyone who wishes can light candles regardless of their financial means. The Vigil for the Church and the Fallen Away is an offering of our parish, and we will not financially profit from it in anyway. After we have covered expenses, 100% of extra monies raised will be given to support the missions and those in need. I am grateful in advance for the generosity of our community. Following the opening Mass on Tuesday evening the Church will be open and prayers will be offered for 48 hours continually until we close the Vigil with a 6:30pm Mass on Thursday evening. During those 48 hours you are invited to stop by the Church and pray. Stop in before work, after work, in the middle of the day, whenever and however often you wish. Prayers will be offered continually for the entire time, the doors will remain unlocked each day from 5:00am 11:00pm. (Between the hours of 11:00pm and 5:00am the vigil will continue but the doors of the church will be locked for the safety of those inside. If you wish to visit the Church during the overnight hours please contact me to make arrangements.) The Vigil is meant to be a time in which members of the parish come and go often, praying at all different hours of day and night. During the Vigil there will also be prayers such as the Morning Prayer, the Rosary, Confessions, and the Divine Mercy Chaplet that will be offered, see the schedule in the bulletin for more information. The important thing is that throughout the vigil we come and pray! It does not matter the day nor the hour, the Lord will be there, our parish will be there, and the candles for each of our loved ones will be burning brightly. On Thursday evening we will gather again to close the Vigil with Mass. Please do come and be part of this important Vigil for the Church and for the Fallen Away. There is no greater love than to lay down one s life for a friend. This week let us all lay down and surrender our time, our schedules, and lift up those who are away so that we might be together in God s love for eternity. Fr. Andrew
