7 Page 7 North Side Catholic Community Weekly Column from the Ministry Team? By Fr. Larry Smith On this second Sunday of Lent, Jesus invites Peter, James, and John to climb a mountain. Last week the desert, this week a mountain. Because the Gospel is Living Word, can we imagine the Lord inviting us to climb a mountain? The apostles felt let down after Jesus told them that his role as the Messiah would mean that he would suffer, die, but rise on the third day. The last part was overlooked, but not the suffering and death. On our Lenten journey, perhaps there has already been some trials and some distress. If we take the invitation of the Lord to lift ourselves up and go higher in our prayer life, in our fasting, and the good works we can do for others, then we are on the journey. When they reached the designated spot, Jesus was transformed before their very eyes. With him, Moses and Elijah appeared. Peter was overwhelmed and wanted to build three huts. In our own lives, we build our own huts during special moments like a wedding celebration, the birth of a child, and all the holiday events. There are times when we want the moments to stand still. But, as Christians, followers of the Lord Jesus, there are those occasions that we go downward when there is the loss of a job, sickness, and the everyday problems of life. Just as Jesus led the apostles down the mountain and on the journey to Jerusalem, he likewise is present with us every day of our lives in joyful times and those times of sorrow. When we fully accept our role as Christians, then the voice of the Father will speak in our hearts, You are my beloved people, and I am very pleased with the lives you are living." As we praise the Lord at Mass today, the vestments worn by the priest are purple. Yet, I know as I look out into the congregation, I will see some green shamrocks, some green ties, other green items, and especially some beautiful Irish smiles. March 17 is the Feast of St. Patrick, even though we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. St. Patrick climbed the mountain and heard the voice of God calling him to a vocation of priestly life. As bishop, he went down the mountain to proclaim the Good News to the people of Ireland. SAINT PATRICK, PRAY FOR US. On a lighter note, after a few conversations with several people, I am interested in planning a trip to Disney in Orlando for January, Those who might be interested, send me an E- mail at frlarry645@stgregzelie.org. I will schedule a meeting before the end of summer if there is enough interest to give the details. Numerous options will be available.

8 Second Sunday of Lent Page 8 Moving Towards One We are now in our 5th month of working together as a group and moving along. I would like to share some personal experiences. First, this reminds me of my time as a pastoral council member at St Catherine of Siena in Beechview in the late 80s and early 90s. I was a young man in my late 20s having the time of my life. I had a great career in the medical field as a Radiation Therapist and was very involved in my parish. This was the time of initiative of a large set of mergers. In Beechview, there are two Catholic parishes: St. Catherine of Siena and St. Pamphilus. As a young man involved in the Faith, I was involved in activities and events in both parishes. St. Pamphilus was special to me, although it was not my parish, because it took the place of St. Peter Parish that was dissolved in the Uptown section of Pittsburgh. It was an Italian Parish run by Franciscans very dear to my relatives. I also was very involved in surrounding parishes: St. Pius X, Resurrection, St. Margaret and Sts. Simon and Jude. The Pastoral Council had a huge role in the meetings about the possible merger that would happen in At that time we came together in town Hall meetings, as well as our group meetings. We were all pretty much booming parishes at the time (not so much now), and we were very excited to become ONE. I remember our talks well. We talked about how the Church is One Faith divided into parishes. We talked about our ministries, our devotions, our outreach in the communities. We saw each other as brothers and sisters. As I look back, I am amazed at the conversations between the St. Catherine and St. Pamphilus people of the time. They were both willing to close their churches if needed in order be a great community. Their main comment was, We just want to serve the Lord and the Faith with great strength in numbers and as a family. We were very sad, when Cardinal (Bishop at the time) Wuerl did not combine us into one. Second, you should know I make my rounds, although some of you do not see me as much on Sundays. I see many parishioners at events and during the week, as well as on the weekends. I am very happy with how supportive and cooperative most people are, given the reality of the shrinking amount of Catholics in our area, shrinking number of priests in the diocese, and therefore shrinking amount of monetary resources. I believe that most of you understand that, very shortly, we will have fewer priests than you see and not enough resources to maintain buildings, which some parishes are already experiencing. Third, there is a small amount of negativity in some comments and thoughts I hear. As you know, even small negativity is like the small amount of yeast in dough. It will rise and take the true focus of who we are as Christians away from us, and allow the evil one to divide us instead of allowing God to unite us. On this St. Patrick Day, let us also reflect on how St. Patrick used the clover to show God is One in Union yet three people. We can do the same for God by showing we are One in His Spirit as we plan to be one parish this year. The song, They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love is an excellent prayer for us to pray each day, and to truly take the attitudes of the early Christians with the apostles to heart and live as they lived. The last stanza shows that when we live this way from the heart, in cooperation, support, and unity we truly praise God. This song is based on the Word of God: Galatians 6:1; Colossians 1:10; 3 John 1:2; Matthew 9:31; Mark 1:45; 1 Corinthians 14:25; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Hebrews 2:10; We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord; And we pray that all unity will one day be restored. Chorus: And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love. We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand; And together we'll spread the news that God is in our land. Chorus: And They ll know. We Will work with each other, we will work side by side; And we'll guard each man's dignity and save each man's pride. Chorus: And They ll know. All praise to the Father, from whom all things come; And all praise to Christ Jesus, His only Son. And all praise to the Spirit who makes us one. Chorus: And They ll know

10 Second Sunday of Lent Page 10 Weekly Column from the Pastoral Associate We are called. On Ash Wednesday, I accompanied my mentor-friend, Barbara, to distribute ashes and Holy Communion at the North Side Manor Care. My time there made me reflect on the scope of human life and experience, and reminded me of a well-known talk given by Pope Francis, which is worth quoting at length: As I meet, or lend an ear to those who are sick, to the migrants who face terrible hardships in search of a brighter future, to prison inmates who carry a hell of pain inside their hearts, and to those, many of them young, who cannot find a job, I often find myself wondering: Why them and not me? I, myself, was born in a family of migrants; my father, my grandparents, like many other Italians, left for Argentina and met the fate of those who are left with nothing. I could have very well ended up among today s discarded people. And that s why I always ask myself, deep in my heart: Why them and not me? First and foremost, I would love it if [we were reminded] that we all need each other, none of us is an island, an autonomous and independent I, separated from the other, and we can only build the future by standing together, including everyone. We don t think about it often, but everything is connected, and we need to restore our connections to a healthy state. Even the harsh judgment I hold in my heart against my brother or my sister, the open wound that was never cured, the offense that was never forgiven, the rancor that is only going to hurt me, are all instances of a fight that I carry within me, a flare deep in my heart that needs to be extinguished before it goes up in flames, leaving only ashes behind. Many of us, nowadays, seem to believe that a happy future is something impossible to achieve. While such concerns must be taken very seriously, they are not invincible. They can be overcome when we don t lock our door to the outside world. Happiness can only be discovered as a gift of harmony between the whole and each single component. May God continue to be with us on our Lenten journey, and lead our hearts to openness and hope. Mary Swindal, Pastoral Associate NEXT WEEK Moving Towards One. Mark your calendars All parishioners are invited to attend an information session parish assembly where the final phase of the parish merger will be discussed. This will include the presentation of parish data and the merger timeline, as well as time for questions and answers. Please consider this wonderful opportunity for Lenten almsgiving. About those Baby Bottles! As an almsgiving project this Lent, you may know that all of our parishes are joining together to raise funds for two organizations which provide essential and compassionate support to expectant and new mothers. Most parishioners are probably familiar with, and perhaps have previously supported Genesis and Women's Choice Network in their good works. The difference this time is the method! Most of us have plenty of change lying around our homes. The project for both of these groups involves filling the baby bottles provided at church with all of that loose change, and then returning the filled bottles to the bins where you picked them up. Please grab a bottle and support a wonderful organization! (PS Please return bottles to the bins at church by March 31. Late returns accepted.) Thank you! 15 Second Sunday of Lent Page 15 Saint Anthony Chapel From the desk of the Director The Chapel is getting quite busy this week with special events. We have the Healing and Anointing Service today, the Marian Merciful Love Concert and talk next Sunday, and the Bishop is coming to celebrate Stations of the Cross with us this Friday at 7pm. During Lent many people look to not only sacrifice for Lent but to do something to develop their spiritual lives. We have several opportunities here at the Chapel to do exactly that. The intercessory power of Paul Miller, TOS is well attested. His witness talk shows the power of God to take an ordinary Catholic and make that person his chosen instrument. He can provide inspiration for anyone seeking a closer relationship with Christ. Anna Nuzzo and the other speakers on March 24th are giving us an insight into God s transforming love. Christ s love is expressed powerfully in His saving Death and Resurrection. Our Lent is enriched by chances such as this opportunity. Bp. Zubik makes it a practice to visit different churches for Stations every Lent. We are blessed to have the chief shepherd of our diocese to lead us in Stations. His insight and prayerful expression of Christ s Passion will help us enter more deeply into the Mystery of our Salvation. May St. Anthony and all the Saints of the Chapel pray for you. Pax, Fr. Jim Healing & Anointing Service The Order of Malta is sponsoring a healing and anointing service on Sunday, March 17th at 4:30 pm at St. Anthony Chapel. The Knights and Dames are hosting Brother Paul Miller, a professed member of the Secular Franciscan Order. He will bring his healing ministry of Divine Mercy. He ministers to the sick, the poor, the marginalized and all seeking our Lord s healing and peace. All are invited to attend. There will also be the opportunity to receive the anointing of the sick. 13 Tuesday Novena The Annual 13 Tuesday Novena to St. Anthony of Padua begins on Tuesday, March 19th.
