1 The Canterbury Tales June 2013 Mushroom Breaking Through Asphalt & Rock Hoping to Grow and Flourish Wow how can this be?! Does something this fragile really possess the strength to break through tough ground to grow? I see God s hand in this miracle and wonder at the power of creation. I think about the effort it took, unseen in the dark and appreciate the sheer beauty of life. I want to share this discovery with my friends and show them how incredible this is. I feel a desire to protect this fragile plant, to give it every chance to grow and flourish. I whisper a prayer of thankfulness that God allowed me a glimpse of His glory and add a prayer for protection. Blessings, Joan Howe, The missio:engage! Team Construction Site Trailer 1
2 Called to Build IT S A NEW DAY! Dear Family and Friends of St. Augustine, A new day is dawning! Soon we will hear the sound of tractors and earth movers making way for construction of the First Church. Just twelve months ago, we began our Capital Campaign. Thank you to the faithful who responded with commitments of more than $500,000 to the Called to Build Campaign. It has been exciting to see how the people in our congregation have worked together to share in the sacrifice for our First Church. Our sacred space will be a legacy for the hopes and dreams of future generations. On Sunday, June 9, we will mark the close of the first year of the Capital Campaign. Please join us at the 10 a.m. service for a morning of celebration. We will announce the one-year results of the Called to Build Campaign we will share with you a video of the last year s activities at St. Augustine and we will gather after the service for a BBQ lunch fundraiser hosted by the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. The Called to Build Campaign has challenged us to feel the power of God s call for us and to prayerfully seek God s leading on how we can continue to give sacrificially. God is faithful and loving and that is exactly what our new sacred space will represent to the community of Rocklin we want to shine the light of Christ! If you are new to St. Augustine and have not received a commitment card, there will be Called to Build packets available at the service. Or, if you were not able to make a commitment a year ago, we will welcome your pledge this year. We look forward to seeing you at the June 9 Celebration Service. The Appreciation Team 2

Funds raised will be used to support Brotherhood outreach efforts in the city of Rocklin. IT S A NEW DAY! Campaign Goal $500,000 Campaign Pledges to Date $524,584 Total Collected to Date $211,725 Gratitude for Results Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. (Luke 6:38) 3
4 From the Pastor Our Special Season of Prayer How can we fully express the depth and breadth of our feelings about our shared lives at St. Augustine? The beginnings of the mighty mushroom that we call the First Church is beginning to emerge from the earth. New life is in our midst and life is passing from this earth to be in God s presence for eternity. Dreaming of who we are becoming, being the church, being the Body of Christ to those we meet. How can we express ourselves, our gratitude, our struggle, our confusion, our clarity, our joy? Prayer. In our shared prayers on a Sunday morning. In the prayers we share with our spouse or partner, our children, our grandchildren. And I am inviting us into a special season of prayer. There is so much happening in our midst that is good and wonderful. There are hard things, too. All of it bringing change. And change can bring fears, anxiety, even stubbornness. Gratitude and prayer are the tools God gives us to find peace and freedom in all of that. We begin this season of prayer as we see the tractors moving dirt, workers beginning to bring to life our sacred space. They are our partners. God is our leader. We will use the prayers that we used for our Prayer Service last year during our Capital Campaign. We stood together on the dirt that would become our First Church and we offered prayers. We walked from space to space the doorway, the fellowship hall, the Sunday School rooms and nursery, the location of our baptismal font, the choir space, the place where God s Word will be proclaimed and where our altar will be the table of our Lord s Supper. Walk with me in prayer through our First Church each day. God is calling us onward, and onward we come, praying, praying, praying! God s Peace, Pastor Liz In this issue missio:engage! 10 Dear St. Augustine Family, The time has come for us to say good-bye. With heavy hearts, we leave you, our wonderful family, to make our move to Texas. Born and raised in Houston, and Aaron in Illinois, our new home in Austin will be closer to those family members who need us now more than ever. Though excited about our new adventures, it is never easy to leave behind what is familiar and comforting. We will truly miss EVERYONE at St. Augustine and all the love that you embraced me, Aaron, Lily and Zach with these past seven years. We love the fact that we are still part of BTC and definitely plan on returning for the grand opening! I may be headed back to Baptist country, but this gal is a TRUE EPISCOPALIAN (I did spell that correctly, right?) Hee, hee! Love, Love, Love y all. Catherine, Aaron, Lily and Zach Beckman Searching A new day is dawning in the life of St. Augustine. Now that construction of our First Church is near, I have been remembering all of the spiritual pilgrims who have shared the 22 years of wandering that have been our faith journey. The faces in our community have changed over the years and I still miss many of those who left for various reasons. It occurs to me that this would be an appropriate time to reach out and let those who have been a part of our journey know what has become of us. One way to do this is to take old church directories and attempt to locate where these lost pilgrims have landed and invite them to visit us at the time the new building is dedicated. The old directories are available. I propose a mailing list be created using people finder and word of mouth in the same way class reunions are organized to find these 'lost sheep. Anyone with basic computer skills and a willingness to play detective and create a list from the old directories should contact Rich Wampler. 10
