3 THIS SUNDAY WE GIVE SPECIAL RECOGNITION to those who have received a specific call from the Holy Spirit and a "special charism recognized by the Church" as catechists. Catechist are persons of faith who have been commissioned for specific roles in leading others to a deeper understanding of faith teachings and to a deeper encounter with Christ. At our 9 o'clock Mass on Sunday, our parish will recognize catechists past and present, and commission for ministry those who are serving as catechists this year. Every baptized Catholic is personally called by the Holy Spirit to make his or her contribution to the coming of God's kingdom. Within the lay state there are various vocations, or different spiritual and apostolic roads, to be followed by both individuals and groups. Within the general vocation of the laity there are particular ones including catechist. It is important for the catechist candidate to recognize the supernatural and ecclesial significance of this call, so as to be able to respond like the prophet, "Here I am, send me" (Is 6:8). Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each of us plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate ourselves to this mission as a community of faith. ASKING CATHOLIC QUESTIONS Recognizing the Value of Questions One of the greatest anomalies that I face in the college classroom is the hardened unwillingness and inability of students to ask questions. My students have been so conditioned to be afraid of asking questions that they tend to think the BEST way to conclude any kind of reading is with "I don't have any questions." They think that to say this communicates that they have understood everything they read and that they are in good shape "for the test." Marrying Faith and Reason The Catholic Church's commitment to the marriage of faith and reason indicates that at the level of principle, the Catholic Church welcomes questions. However, how well do we welcome questions at the level of fact? Are we conscious that the basic truths of our faith are mysteries and, as such, remain counter -intuitive? Or have we become flippant and superficial regarding explanations of the mysteries we proclaim to believe in the Nicene Creed? Have we forgotten that the Incarnation spawned centuries of debate regarding how to speak about God in the flesh AND God three-and-one? Have we forgotten the scandal that God-in-the-flesh (much less a crucified God) is to one looking in on this scene from the outside? Youth who ask questions regarding dogmatic mysteries of the faith reveal the desire to understand these mysteries inasmuch as they can be understood. In asking pointed questions about these mysteries in relationship to their experience, they reveal the inherent understanding that God wills that we use our intelligence to know him so that our act of faith might truly be a well calculated risk, to use the language of Bishop Robert Barron. It seems that convinced Christian believers are unable, at times, to appreciate the value of the questions asked by a "None" (a person who identifies with no religion) because the convinced Christian believer has absorbed a mentality that is afraid to ask questions. In reality, the well-placed question asked by a "None" can, at times, be an extraordinarily good entre to introducing the mystery of Christ. The "None" in the room might just be the person who is most "paying attention." Sister Marie Kolbe Zamora Excerpted from resources at
4 THE EVENING SESSION of our adult faith formation program, Faith Matters Evening, is expanding to Monday evenings, beginning Monday, September 24. We will be studying the Letter of James in Pearls for Wise Living. This is an 11-week study from Ascension Press and Jeff Cavins. If you are familiar with these studies, you ll want to attend. If you re not familiar with these resources, you are challenged to come check it out! These studies are life changing. Please join us on September 24 from 7 to 8:30 pm. for the introductory class We ll be meeting in Menniti Hall. No prior registration is necessary. Contact: Patti Martin, pattim8615@gmail.com. HAVE A SWEET TOOTH? LIKE TO SHOP? MAYBE BOTH! Stop in Menniti Hall and Connection s Corner on September 29 or 30 to place your fudge orders for Sweet Ali s peanut butter, peanut butter & chocolate, original chocolate, sea-salt caramel, and cookies & cream. Samples will be available in Menniti Hall after all Masses while supplies last. Boscov s Friends Helping Friends Shopping Pass will also be available on these dates. CCD WISH ITEM! Our coordinators and teachers could really benefit from a color printer in the CCD office. In addition to giving teachers the facility to print classroom materials on Sunday morning, this printer would also save wear-and-tear on the heavily-used printer in the parish office. Can you help? Cost is about $250. Contact CCD Coordinator Patty Wargo, pwargo@steas.net, for information. NEW SPEAKER BEGINS THIS WEEK AT TMIY! This year's That Man Is You! features a series of speakers on different topics, so if you missed the first couple of weeks, this is a great time to drop in. Speaker is John Pridmore, with the presentation From Gangland to Promised Land. Topics include the transforming power of God, a riveting conversion story, God's joy in forgiving, and how God works miracles in the heart. The guys meet Saturdays at 6:30 am, with the same session the following Tuesday at 9 am, for those who prefer a weekday morning. SPIRITUAL BOOK GROUP is continuing the second half of its discussion on A Pope and a President: John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, and the Extraordinary Untold Story of the 20th Century. While historians credit Reagan and Saint Pope John Paul with hastening the end of the Cold War, many have not recognized the depth of the bond they developed. Scholar and bestselling author Paul Kengor reveals this singular bond which included a spiritual connection between the Catholic pope and the Protestant president. The discussion is this Tuesday, September 18, at 7 pm. NEXT SUMMER, our parish will sponsor an Appalachian Mission Trip for youth. Planning is underway now. To learn more about taking part as a youth volunteer, traveling as an adult leader, or helping to plan and organize the trip, contact Donna in the parish office: donna@steas.net, SPONSOR OF THE WEEK We wish to thank APICELLA-LOREI ORTHODONTICS for sponsoring an ad in our weekly bulletin.
