Divine Mercy Sunday April 23, 2017 Love of of John has reminded us: "By this we know that we love God and love of one's brothers and sisters are inseparable, as the First Letter the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments" (5: 2). Here the Apostle reminds us of the truth of love, showing us its measure and criterion in the observance of the commandments. It is not easy to love with a deep love, which lies in the authentic gift of self. This love can only be learned by penetrating the mystery of God's love. Looking at him, being one with his fatherly heart, we are able to look with new eyes at our brothers and sisters, with an attitude of unselfishness and solidarity, of generosity and forgiveness. All this is mercy! (continued inside)

3 To the extent that humanity penetrates the mystery of this merciful gaze, it will seem possible to fulfil the ideal in Acts 4:32: "The community of believers were of one heart and one mind. None of them ever claimed anything as his own; rather everything was held in common." Here mercy gave form to human relations and community life; it constituted the basis for the sharing of goods. This led to the spiritual and corporal "works of mercy." Here mercy became a concrete way of being "neighbor" to one's neediest brothers and sisters. Saint Faustina Kowalska wrote in her Diary: "I feel tremendous pain when I see the sufferings of my neighbors. All my neighbors' sufferings reverberate in my own heart; I carry their anguish in my heart in such a way that it even physically destroys me. I would like all their sorrows to fall upon me, in order to relieve my neighbor" (Diary, p. 365). Thus the message of divine mercy is also implicitly a message about the value of every human being. Each person is precious in God's eyes; Christ gave his life for each one; to everyone the Father gives his Spirit and offers intimacy. This consoling message is addressed above all to those who, afflicted by a particularly harsh trial or crushed by the weight of the sins they committed, have lost all confidence in life and are tempted to give in to despair. To them the gentle face of Christ is offered; those rays from his heart touch them and shine upon them, warm them, show them the way and fill them with hope. How many souls have been consoled by the prayer "Jesus, I trust in you," which Providence intimated through Saint Faustina! 4 DREAMING OF A CRUISE ALONG THE DANUBE? We re planning one for September 2018! Come to an informational meeting on Tuesday, May 9, at 6:30 pm in Menniti Hall, when Matt D'Eramo from Collette Vacations will provide details. Not limited to parishioners; feel free to invite friends and family. If you are planning to attend, please contact Jeannie ( , jeannieish@comcast.net) so we can plan for seating and materials. MONSIGNOR KING WILL BE TEACHING a special series on Fundamentals of the Catholic Faith: A Survey of Theology on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm in the Bayley Conference Room, from May 3 to June 14. Topics will include Divine revelation, the concept of "Church," Christian anthropology, and spiritual and sacramental theology. As part of the series, Father Eseke will give a presentation on Experiences and Expressions of a Global Church. No books; no registration; no fees. All are welcome. A perfect opportunity to invite a neighbor or family member who might be interested in a great overview of the Catholic Faith. FAITH MATTERS MORNING JOIN US! On Wednesday, April 26, at 9:30 am in the Bayley Conference Room, we begin our springtime study, Who Am I to Judge? with Dr. Edward Sri a new program by the Augustine Institute. In this session, we begin to explore the questions that affect all of us, surrounded by the relativistic outlook that pervades the modern world. Perhaps we wonder whether there is an absolute right and wrong for everyone. Perhaps we accept that there is a moral standard for all, but we don t know how to explain our moral convictions to others. Perhaps we are afraid of saying that something is immoral because we are afraid of being labeled intolerant. This will be the starting point as we begin our new program of spiritual development. Questions? Contact Mel Lee (melmolee@reagan.com). KITCHEN CERTIFICATION Our kitchen volunteers work very hard to make sure we are in compliance with all health regs and best practices for health and safety. The Department of Agriculture is looking to provide a certification class for all ministries who will be using our kitchen facilities. It is very important that at least 2 persons (or more) from each ministry be certified. We must submit the number of persons who will be attending this class so that there will be enough trainers. As soon as we have the number of attendees, the department will work with us to set the training date. Please contact Donna in the parish office (donna@steas.net) by May 1 with the number of members of your group who will be attending. THE NEXT SENIORS LUNCHEON AND MOVIE is coming up this Thursday, April 27 at 11 am. Please call Colleen ( ) by Monday to sign up. This month's film is Finding Fatima. NEW ROSARY DEVOTION SCHEDULE Next Sunday, April 30, the Knights of Columbus will be leading the praying of the Rosary after the 9 am Mass. These Rosary services will be held throughout the year in the month that has a fifth Sunday. Please join us as we venerate the Blessed Mother with the beautiful Rosary prayer. SPONSOR OF THE WEEK We wish to thank the Law Offices of Saidis, Sullivan & Rogers for sponsoring an ad in our weekly bulletin.
