3 APRIL 3, 2016 A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY My guess is that if you're reading this column, you've already been confirmed probably when you were a teenager, but conceivably earlier. As a matter of fact I was confirmed when I was eleven. The process was much easier than today, but you had to study a lot of catechism questions and know all about what holy chrism was and the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit (Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Knowledge, Piety, Fortitude and Fear of the Lord.) The high point of the whole preparation was the oral examination by the priest and he made it very easy with softball questions. There was no such thing as community service and your big worry was the tap on the cheek the bishop would give you when you were confirmed. Today things are a little more complicated and those to be confirmed are expected to do reports, give evidence of community service and be involved in the life of the Church. For me, the most important thing is that they go to Mass every Sunday. While that certainly is not all you have to do as a good Catholic, it certainly is a big step in the right direction. If you go to Mass, a lot of other things take care of themselves. Unfortunately, in the climate in which we live many get confirmed and do not have the decided advantage of having churchgoing parents. For a variety of reasons, many Catholics who should be have never been confirmed. The good news is that the Church is anxious to take care of that situation. On Pentecost Sunday Bishop Murphy usually gives the faculty to his priests to confirm adult Catholics (18 and over) who have never been confirmed. Should you or someone you know wish to receive Confirmation, simply call me at the Rectory and I will make arrangements for appropriate instruction and simple paperwork completion. Teens are a special case. In this Diocese of Rockville Centre the confirmation of teens is reserved to a bishop. Nevertheless, in individual cases the Bishop will give priests the special faculty to confirm those teens who are above the age for confirmation in the parish. Here that would be 15 and older. As your pastor, I urge any adult or teen who has not been confirmed to take the opportunity to receive this great and powerful sacrament. It will make a big difference in your spiritual life and you will have the happiness of receiving the fullness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. In addition, you will be able to serve as a sponsor (godparent) at baptism and confirmation. You will also be a fully initiated Catholic. The sacraments are the signs of the unlimited

4 love of Jesus and we should make every effort to receive these great gifts from His Heart and the heart of His Church. I look forward to meeting with anyone I can help to make the reception of Confirmation a beautiful and rewarding spiritual experience. Don't hesitate to call! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. Mc Donald Blessed are they who have not seen and have believed, Jesus says in today s Gospel. For those who have not seen to believe, however, we must be good stewards of our faith, living it joyfully and sharing it generously. 5 `tçç g{tç~á4 I begin my words of thanks to the many people who were involved in our Triduum services, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. These beautiful services helped to provide a wonderful atmosphere to prepare us for the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. I especially thank Drago Bubalo, our Director of Music, Reagan Stone, Brian Goff, Eileen Calder, Angelina Fusco, Danny Maimone, Greg Mercer, Melissa Escobar and the musicians from Stony brook University, Josephine Tudisco, Caroline Stalters and all the Church of St. Aidan choirs and children of the parish who participated in the various programs. We welcomed thousands of people to our parish and I thank the many parishioners and staff members who made everything go so well and with such beauty. I thank my brother priests, deacons and office staff for their many hours of hard work. Thanks to John Hayes, Maria Peluso, Lynn Przeniczny and all the helpers who decorated and made our church look absolutely magnificent! I offer a special thanks to the maintenance team Frank Deo, Pat Perez, Carlos Liberona and Kevin Keenan who put up the decorations in the church and got Monsignor Kirwin Hall ready for Easter. Also, many thanks to our sacristans, especially John Hayes and Tom Flynn and to all the parishioners who served during the services Ushers, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Altar Servers and Crossing Guards. I thank Rosemarie Cavallaro, Director of Parish Social Ministry for providing food and Easter baskets for those in need. Congratulations to Wendy Paladino and Erica Yamamoto who received the three Sacraments of Initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. For many months they have been on a journey through the RCIA Program. 8 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" 1 st Amendment to the Constitution Hostility to Religion Harms Everyone: The increasing numbers of documented legal, cultural, and social attacks on religion are rising like floodwaters. These attacks are sweeping away small businesses, careers, and ministries, demonstrating a denial of human tolerance and compassion. The animus toward religion springs from a relatively small but powerful sector of society composed of influential people and organizations who consider active faith as irrelevant at best and dangerous to social progress at worst. Good employees are being unlawfully fired and productive businesses recklessly harmed. Religious freedom is in the First Amendment because all other freedoms rest upon it. Without the concept of a higher authority to make government accountable to unchanging principles of justice, all other freedoms are at risk of being violated, redefined, or revoked by government. (firstliberty.org, 3/17/16) "Equality Act" May End Christian Freedom & Rights: The unjust and unequal "Equality Act", introduced in Congress before summer, 2015, would essentially wipe out free speech and religious liberty on the issues of sexual orientation and gender identity, granting this group special protections designed to nullify any Religious Freedom Restoration acts, rendering them powerless under this bill. (wnd.com, 8/11/15) Please continue to pray for Little Sisters of the Poor as their case is now being deliberated by the Supreme Court. 9 QUOTES FROM POPE FRANCIS ON THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY God s justice is his mercy given to everyone as a grace that flows from the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thus the Cross of Christ is God s judgment on all of us and on the whole world, because through it he offers us the certitude of love and new life. LITURGY CORNER Our Lord made many requests through St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, but the Feast of Mercy holds first place. The Second Sunday of Easter was already a solemnity as the Octave Day of Easter; but the new title, "Divine Mercy Sunday", highlights the deeper meaning of the day. Pope John Paul II recognized this by announcing the change in his homily at the canonization of St. Faustina on April 30, 2000 in which he declared: It is important then that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church, will be called Divine Mercy Sunday and that the Image of The Divine Mercy St. Faustina is to be venerated on Divine Mercy Sunday. It represents the Risen Christ bringing mercy to the world. The two rays, as Jesus Himself explained to St. Faustina, represent blood and water. This also recalls the Gospel of St. John, who tells us that when a soldier on Calvary pierced Christ's side with his spear, blood and water flowed from it. And just as the blood recalls the sacrifice of the cross and the gift of the Eucharist, the water represents not only Baptism but also the gift of the Holy Spirit". God s mercy endures forever, and Divine Mercy Sunday reminds us in a special way how vast is His mercy, and at what cost He provides it to us.

10 BEREAVEMENT GROUP SPRING 2016 COPING WITH GRIEF: A DIFFICULT BUT IMPORTANT JOURNEY When a loved one dies, a period of grief usually follows. It is almost impossible for humans to experience loss without feeling some kind of grief. Grief can be painful, confusing and overwhelming. Tuesdays, 9:45 AM, April 5 th, 12 th, 19th & 26 th, May 3 rd & 10 th Thursday, 7:30 PM, April 7 th, 14 th, 21 st, 28 th, & May 5 th & 12 th Please call the Parish Social Ministry Office at (516) x9408 to register. 15 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus himself told Saint Sister Faustina of his desire to dedicate the Sunday after Easter to His Divine Mercy. Let s invoke the mercy of our God, always ready to forgive us and to show us His love. We are people of the morning, the morning that brings the Resurrected Jesus alive to us, with the hope of our own resurrection, and the encounter in the Eucharist of His love and mercy. We have so many reasons to be thankful for our gift of faith! For the Sacraments, which gives us the graces to obtain salvation. For the priesthood, who, answering God s call, brings us these Sacraments, and acts as Christ s hands. In today s world to choose religious life requires many personal sacrifices. For the Pope, the unifying head of our church. For Mary, our Mother, who said YES and brought us the Son of God, and who now protects us and acts as our maternal guide. For the saints, who inspire us to follow in the path to God, and show us the way out of our weakness and limitations, those who heard Jesus command Be holy as the Father is Holy. There is so much to be thankful for! We must live in the light of the Resurrection of Christ. If we really believe and act upon this belief in our daily lives, we can change the world around us. If we not only talk about Christ, but we bring Him to those around us, a great deal can be obtain. He must be a living, vital reality, in our life, in our acts, in our love for others. As Mary was the God-Bearer, bearing for us the one from eternity, we shall be looking after her to become in a small way God-bearers, saying YES to God and given Him to others around us. May Mary serve as our model to carry Christ into the world each and every day. Share our belief in Jesus Resurrection with others today! I want to remind all of you that this week is very important online event starts; for ten weeks we are invited to journey with Fr. Michael Gaitley as he shares the dramatic history of God s love and mercy. This breathtaking series explores the messages to St. Faustina, the miraculous appearance of Mary at Fatima, the witness of St. M. Kolbe, and the extraordinary papacy of Pope St. John Paul II. This event is available in FORMED, the program that our Parish has given to us as a gift; I urge you to register and start partaking of many special programs. You only have to enter FORMED.ORG in your computer, table, or iphone and give our Code # 07d527 when prompt. After your register you would find the Catholic Faith at you demand! Do not forget to stop by our Kiosks and see all the CDs about Divine Mercy we have, take one for yourself and another for someone that needs to listen to it. Do the work God s wants from you and you will be blessed. Happy Easter Season! KNIGHTS CORNER Perhaps now is the time to consider joining the Knights of Columbus! RELIGIOUS LIBERTY - The Knights of Columbus promotes a robust vision of religious liberty that embraces religion s proper role in both its private and public dimensions. As both Catholics and Americans, we celebrate the essential relationship shared between religion and liberty, a relationship which has uniquely defined our country s identity and has fostered our country s development. Every major achievement that has taken place within the American enterprise the American Revolution; the abolition of slavery; the civil rights movement; reforms in education, labor and woman s rights has been at the urging of religious people seeking a more just and humane society. In this light, the Knights of Columbus recognizes religious liberty as an indispensable condition for authentic human development. Consistent with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we believe that man, created in the image and likeness of God, possesses the natural right to be recognized as a free and responsible being, especially in moral and religious matters. Our Order remains steadfast in its conviction that religious liberty is an inalienable requirement of the dignity of the human person. (Catechism, 1738) HALL RENTAL Corpus Christi Council is available for parties BIG and SMALL. For information on hall rental call Tom at (516)

NATIONAL HEALTHCARE DECISIONS DAY SET FOR APRIL 16-The Maria Regina Residence, along with other national, state and community organizations, is leading a massive effort to highlight the importance of advance healthcare decision-making an effort that has culminated in the formal designation of April 16 as National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD). As a participating organization, The Maria Regina Residence is providing information and tools for the public to talk about their wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers, and to designate a health care proxy in accordance with New York State laws. Specifically, on April 16th, from 2:30 to 3:30 PM. The Maria Regina Residence and The Gitenstein Institute for Health Law and Policy at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University and the Northwell Health System CHAT program, are partnering to provide a free community education program to be held at The Maria Regina Residence, located at 1725 Brentwood Rd, Building #1, Brentwood, NY Steve Walerstein, M.D., M.A.C.P. and Adam D. Kahn, J.D. will provide attendees with free information and tools for participants to create their own advance care planning documents and to begin to have those important conversations with families and healthcare providers. As a result of National Healthcare Decisions Day, many more people in our community can be expected to have thoughtful conversations about their healthcare decisions and complete reliable advance directives to make their wishes known, said Ellen Bartoldus, Administrator of the Maria Regina Residence. Fewer families and healthcare providers will have to struggle with making difficult healthcare decisions in the absence of guidance from the patient, and healthcare providers and facilities will be better equipped to address advance healthcare planning issues before a crisis and be better able to honor patient wishes when the time comes to do so. The theme of this year s National Healthcare Decision Day: "It Always Seems Too Early, Until It s Too Late."
