3 MAY 1, 2016 SUNDAY AT STONY BROOK Last Sunday evening was a very special one at Stony Brook University's Campus Catholic Parish because five young adults received the Sacrament of Confirmation. I have to tell you all about it it was extremely joyful, enthusiastic and hopeful. I met Father Sean Magaldi at St. Patrick in Smithtown where is assigned as an assistant priest and we drove over to the university. (You may recall that Father Sean celebrated his First Solemn Mass here last June 21st.) He goes to the Campus Parish on Tuesday evenings and says Mass and is available to the students. Two Sundays a month he offers Mass at 5:00 PM. When I was the Rector of the Seminary in Huntington I would on a few occasions say the Sunday evening Mass there. I was impressed by the number of students at the Mass and their interest in the faith. There was a wonderful religious, Sister Margaret Landry, who did a fantastic job with the campus ministry. Her work along with that of the priests at St. James in Setauket provided a strong foundation for the Catholic community at Stony Brook. Here young Catholic college students get not only an opportunity for Mass and the sacraments right on campus, but they also have the experience of living and sharing their faith with other committed Catholic young people. There is also an ecumenical dimension to the apostolate in that the young people at times work with other Christians and non-christians. That is a great thing for them and the Church. I wish you could have been there with me on Sunday. When we arrived there was a tremendous sense of excitement and joy. Those to be confirmed and their friends and sponsors were so happy. There was a small contemporary music group and everyone participated in the singing! As Bishop Brennan conferred the sacrament, you could almost feel the Holy Spirit coming down on the five young men and women. The whole celebration could very simply be characterized as joyful and enthusiastic. After Mass we had a buffet supper and the Bishop and Father Sean and I hung around for quite some time going from one group of students to another and there was a lot of laugher and joking. Not only do the young people go to Mass and receive the sacraments, a number of them go on mission trips to help the poor and evangelize. Just recently they went to the city to feed the poor and spread the Gospel of Christ. A few months ago there was a mission trip to the Glenmary Mission in Rutledge Tennessee.

4 Our parish made a small donation to help and I got a beautiful letter back from Joanne Buonocore, the Catholic Campus Minister. (She does a magnificent job!) In her letter to me this past March she described some of the things that happened on that adventure. Just listen to what she said: Our students, together with Newman students from Eastern Illinois University, were divided into three week work groups for the week. For the most part, we completed various tasks regarding home repair, such as applying mortar and caulking between boards of log homes, building a wheelchair ramp, putting up walls and painting a deck. We also experienced a ministry of presence, by volunteering our time in a local nursing home in Grainger County. This alone was a real learning experience for many of our students, who are used to thinking that a concrete, tangible result is all that matters in service; they learned that serving with their heart is just as important as serving with their hands. I just wanted you to know about our campus ministry at Stony Brook and as a matter of fact that story is repeated on other secular college campuses on Long Island. Thanks to all of you and Bishop Murphy and our inspiring campus Catholic communities. We have a lot to be proud of. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. Mc Donald SICK: PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK & DECEASED Christine Schifaudo, Christine Lucivero, Cecilia Han, Geraldo Peixoto, Kimberly Holmes, Father Brian Dalton, Stacy Test, Owen Hogan, Kathleen Gattis, Joseph Fitzgerald, John Moore, Rita Amendola, Virginia Fallon, Joyce French, Barney Rinaldi, Brian Hoffarth, Mary Price, Marie McLaughlin, Judy Eberso-Kostovick, Chris Lynch, Terence Simblitt, Ana Bubalo, Joann McDermott, Michael Vladich, Christopher John Castaneda, Elaine Meduro, Terry Laughlin, Jeanne Jaronczyk, Lucille Dimeola, Julian Gabriel DECEASED: Daniel Schlowinski, Aida Viotti, Herman Hahn, Sara Commetto, Steve Margolies, Martha Becker, Frank Maltese, Joseph Viik and for all those who have died serving our country.

8 Open Invitation Church of St. Aidan Rosary Altar Society Reception of New Members Monday May 9 th, 2016 Monsignor Kirwin Hall more information call President: Barbara Schanno The primary purpose and goal of the society is to praise and honor the Blessed Mother, to secure her patronage by recitation of the Rosary and for the mutual spiritual benefit of all members throughout the world. The Rosary Society is both spiritual and social and assists at parish events. All ladies of the parish are encouraged to join. We meet monthly, the first Monday, following the first Sunday of every month from September through June. We say the recitation of the Rosary at the beginning of the monthly meeting, and recitation of a decade of the Rosary at the wake of a deceased Rosarian. We attend the memorial Mass at the time of a member s death. Members of the Rosary and Altar Society gather at church prior to the funeral Mass for the deceased member to form an Honor Guard. Time or space does not allow for all I want to say about this wonderful group of dedicated women. St. Aidan s Rosary Altar Society has been thriving since its beginning in There is so much to be gained by joining this rewarding society. The spiritual benefits are overwhelming. The social benefits are countless. We have, though the years, over 2000 members and are happy to get plus at our meetings. How pleased the Blessed Mother must be with those numbers. Through the years we have also had men join to receive the Spiritual Benefits of the Confraternity of the Rosary Altar Society. If you joined but haven t been at a meeting for a while, come down and rededicate yourself to Our Lady and her Son, on May 9th. If you have never joined and wish to do so call President, Barbara Schanno, , or Dorothy Roper EASTER CHURCH FLOWERS Kudos to Barbara Schanno and her flower team, especially, Terry Yatco and Concetta Bombace. Since Easter these women, along with others totaling 15, faithfully watered all the Easter plants in the church. This was certainly a labor of love and we all benefited from their dedication. The flowers stayed beautiful! Thank you Ladies you all did a great job.

9 ONE FAITH COMMUNITY As with any family, there are times when a brother or sister is in serious need and reaches out to us for help. Catholic Charities Talbot House serves the needs of families in crisis due to substance abuse. In 2008, Bill received a call from his son Michael who was away at medical school. Michael was in crisis addicted to drugs and plummeting out-of-control. Searching for a safe environment to get Michael help, Bill found Talbot House. At first Michael didn t want to stay but 22 days after he moved in Michael was a different person. Talbot House gave our son back to us. It s a wonderful resource. Michael fully credited Talbot House and his counselor with his recovery. Michael went on to graduate from medical school with the intention of working in the area of addiction medicine. Michael s life was cut short when, on the way to visit his grandmother, his car was hit head-on by an impaired driver. Inspired by his son s desire to help those with addiction, today Bill volunteers at Talbot House as a spiritual education counselor, helping residents address the topics and events that may be holding them back from recovery. Michael said he owed his life to Talbot House. I know I belong here carrying on his work. Please consider donating to the Appeal and a difference in someone s life. Thank you! 10 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION Freedom of Conscience in Jeopardy for Health Care Workers: Recent times have seen numerous incidents in which nurses, doctors, hospital staff and other health care workers are being pressured, required and forced to provide morallycontroversial procedures. * NY City operating room nurse, Cathy Cenzon-DeCarlo, was forced to participate in a gruesome dismemberment of a 22-week-old-fetus, threatened with loss of her nursing license and job. (usccb.org, 12/4/15) * CA started forcing almost all health plans to pay for all abortions without exemption for moral or religious objections. Catholic Bishops fear a mandate to force religious hospitals is next. CA policy clearly violates existing law but there are loopholes and weaknesses that make federal laws ineffective. * Alaska Supreme Court ordered a pro-life hospital to allow its facilities to be used for abortions. (cnsnews.com, 3/29/16) * An American accreditation agency mandated all medical students must receive abortion training. It took passage of a federal law to protect students' rights of conscience. (cqrcengage.com/catholic charities) Cardinal Dolan, NY, and Archbishop Lori, Baltimore, chair pro-life and religious liberty committees urging support of a proposed Conscience Protection Act now before Congress. "While federal laws exist now to protect conscience rights in health care, there is clearly a need for legislation to make this protection truly effective," said a USCCB spokesman. (catholicnewsagency.com, 4/2/16) "When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty." Some suggestions for how you can do this are to start by going through your drawers and closets and find good-condition clothes and shoes to donate to agencies that provide assistance for those in need, including St. Aidan s Parish Outreach (but please call and check before you bring them to Outreach) or the St. Vincent de Paul Society. This is a particularly good time of year for this as you shift from cold weather to warm weather wear. If you didn t wear it last year, you will likely not wear it this year, either! Donate it to someone who needs it. You could also participate in programs that provide towels and linens for hospital sin distressed areas or volunteer to work at a clothing drive or at a shelter where clothing is distributed to those in need.

13 ST. AIDAN SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT St. Aidan School & Schecter School Share Their Faith Grade 8 students from Saint Aidan School and the Schechter School learned about each other's springtime religious feasts--easter and Passover--on Monday, April 19 at the Schechter School. Students viewed an excerpt from Prince of Egypt, which emphasized our commonality, as did a reading from Exodus. Later, faculty and students all joined in a matzo-making session; matzos were baked on site and enjoyed at the end of our visit. Schechter students led Saint Aidan students through the traditional Seder meal, explaining the meal's elements and symbolism as all shared Seder foods. Saint Aidan students were invited to explain our Easter traditions. Students sang "Echad Mi Yodea" ("Who Knows One?"), a traditional Passover children's song, and the visit concluded with a Hebrew prayer of thanksgiving and a Christian Grace after Meals. 14 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA The month of May is rich in Feast and Solemnity s days. We start with The Ascension of the Lord, this coming Thursday; Our Lady of Fatima on May 13th; Pentecost Sunday; The Most Holy Trinity; The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and to wrap everything the last Sunday is the Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), the wonderful celebration of the gift of the Eucharist who transforms our lives. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we turn to the Mother of Mercy. May is the month of Mary, what would we do without her? Remember her words to St. Juan Diego? Am I not here who am your mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? She will guide us to walk the path Our Lord prepared for us; and she will point out when we are wrong, directing us to Her Son. We are inordinately attached to ourselves, to our lifestyle, to our wants, Jesus will free us from those attachments so we can experience life to the fullest, so we can get back to what God wants us to be, where He wants to leads us. That is the way to holiness. We start as sinners and Jesus makes us saints. Jesus leads us to the abundant life, interior peace, wisdom, joy. The way we were created, the way He comes into our world. He invites us, we need to respond, we need to follow Him, wherever Jesus leads us. We need to align our days here on earth with what we want our days to be for eternity. Let s see what is important to me now, and if that is conducive to spend eternity at the right side of the Father. We can start today, changing attitudes, acquiring new habits. An important one: Smile: Let s reclaim our Christian identity being kind, smiling, giving hugs, letting others go first.call or visit a friend connect with people, build relationships, share Scripture with friends.tell someone you love them and why: never tire to tell your siblings, children, parents they are loved. Make a daily habit to tell at least one person in your life how much you love them. And the most important thing to do: Start your day with prayer: make a date of it, set your cell phone alarm, and don t leave God stranded. We have CDs in our kiosks that talk about habits and how to change them Our Lives Change When Our Habits Change by Matthew Kelly who will give practical guidance on ways that we can change our lives and be the best we can be. Don t Just Try, Train also by Matthew Kelly who encourages us to adopt a program of spiritual discipline. These are important CDs to give to others who may need them. The CDs you give away are like seeds you plant in the souls of those close to you. The Lord will see to it that it might grow into a tree, and give the fruits of Faith and Salvation. God Bless you for all you do. Toti Conforti
