Amen. Leader: We may come here for a glimpse of glory, but Jesus asks us: Can you drink the cup that I drink? All: The cup of Jesus own life: struggle and joy; suffering and hope. Fullness of life! Dillworth Joyful Noise and Hallelujah Choirs READINGS Epistle Hebrews 5: 1-10 (The Message) Every high priest selected to represent men and women before God and offer sacrifices for their sins should be able to deal gently with their failings, since he knows what it s like from his own experience. But that also means that he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as the peoples. No one elects himself to this honored position. He s called to it by God, as Aaron was. Neither did Christ presume to set himself up as high priest, but was set apart by the One who said to him, You re my Son; today I celebrate you! In another place God declares, You re a priest forever in the royal order of Melchizedek. While he lived on earth, anticipating death, Jesus cried out in pain and wept in sorrow as he offered up priestly prayers to God. Because he honored God, God answered him. Though he was God s Son, he learned trusting-obedience by what he suffered, just as we do. Then, having arrived at the full stature of his maturity and having been announced by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who believingly obey him. And he said to them, What is it you want me to do for you? And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory. But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. Heike is leading an Adult Education Class on a Theology Makeover. We will read and discuss a book by Martin Thielen What s the least I can believe and still be a Christian A Guide to What matters most. If the title piques your curiosity, this class is for you. Theology is such a big topic, and we all have our own theologies. The book invites us to take a look at 10 things Christians don t need to Believe in part one, and part two gives us 10 things Christians do need to Believe. The list could be and often is longer, but these 10 are a 9

10 good start for a solid base for any Christian. Join us October 28, November 4, and November 11, 2018 for this interesting book discussion and study. Copies of the book are available for purchase in our in house Bookstore ($ 17.00). Transgender Rights at Risk - We can all help Visit the ONA table today in Coffee Hour. Find out what you can do to preserve the rights of transgender people in public spaces. The ONA Ministry Team will provide pledge-to-vote cards and give you a prepackaged way that you can contact your friends to inform them about Question 3 and get their pledge to vote. The leadership of our church has endorsed the mission of the Needham Coalition for Transgender Equality, which is one of the many groups working to save these laws. The Coalition will also sponsor a great community program called Sarah McBride: Why Yes on 3? on October 22, at 7pm, right here in our church. Ms. McBride is the national press secretary of the Human Rights Campaign and author of Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss and the Fight for Transgender Equality. Please join us for that event. Learning from Survivors: A talk with Edwin Canil Monday, October 8:00pm in church conference room Join NISGUA, People in Solidarity with Guatemala in an online conference with Edwin Canil as he discusses how survivor s work for justice changed the conversation about corruption, historical memory, and genocide in Guatemala and the world. Edwin is married to Ali Durbin who grew up in our church. He is the president of the AJR, Association for Justice and Reconciliation. September 28 the Guatemalan court found the Guatemalan army committed genocide in the 1980s but acquitted the military intelligence chief during these years. The conversation will be in English. Village Fair News The Village Fair will be held on November 17 from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. We are having most of the same favorites from years past: Timeless Treasures, Bake Sale, Garden Fence, Silent Auction, Used Books, Elf Shop, Vintage Jewelry, the Handcrafts Boutique, and our beloved Café. Many hands will be needed to help make this fair a success- it remains a solid fundraiser for the church. The Village Fair Crew will be recruiting help for the days leading up to the Fair, the day of the Fair and for the clean-up. We will start having the dreaded sign-up sheets at Fellowship Hour during the next Sundays leading up to the Fair. Please look at your calendar for November 17 and 18 and sign up for a small block of time or two to make this happen! 13 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRIES Sunday School News Sunday School s October Unit is Esther This month our students will learn about the story of Esther, a queen who saves her people. We will learn about courage, justice, and our faith through our time together in Children s Chapel and this story s games, arts & crafts, cooking, and science units. Cooking will take place on Sunday, October 21. Sunday School Classroom Assistants Wanted Volunteers are needed to help in the classrooms. 21 2019 Church Committees and the Nominating Form Our Congregational Bylaws provide for The Board of Directors and four (4) additional Committees elected by the congregation - Deacons, Outreach, Christian Education & Youth, and the Pastoral Relations Committee. In 2019, we will be electing new members for the members whose terms are expiring for all of these Committees and the Board. The Church Bylaws identify the Officers of the church. They are a Moderator, a Clerk, a Treasurer, and a Collector. Officers are elected for one-year terms at each Annual Meeting. The Board of Directors is responsible for the overall administrative life of the church including buildings, finances, personnel and the overall health of the church. The Board consists of a Chairperson (who is duly elected as Moderator of the Church) and 10 members. The Deacons are responsible for the spiritual life and well-being of the church. There are fifteen (15) members elected to serve on this Committee. The Christian Education (CE) & Youth Committee oversees the Christian education of the congregation, with an emphasis on our young children and youth ministry (Junior and Senior High School age). There are twelve (12) members elected to serve on this Committee. The Outreach Committee advocates to the church and its members about important issues relating to social justice in our church, community, city state and the world. They provide opportunities to volunteer and guide us in financial giving. They strive to give 15% of our income from pledges to the church to Outreach financial giving. Nine (9) members are elected to serve on the Outreach Committee. The Pastoral Review Committee (PRC) is an independent group that supports and maintains an open and healthy relationship between the Minister(s) and Members of the Congregation.
