ANTHEM Psalm 150 Louis Lewandowski ( ) SELECTION OF READINGS Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Life Together; the Classic Exploration of Christian Community What determines our brotherhood is what that man is by reason of Christ. Our community with one another consists solely in what Christ has done to both of us. This is true not merely at the beginning, as though in the course of time something else were to be added to our community; it remains so for all the future and to all eternity. I have community with others and I shall continue to have it only through Jesus Christ. The more genuine and the deeper our community becomes, the more will everything else between us recede, the more clearly and purely will Jesus Christ and his work become the one and only thing that is vital between us. We have one another only through Christ, but through Christ we do have one another, wholly, for eternity. 5 Sharing of the Bread and Cup EVERYONE is welcome to receive the Bread and Cup. You don't need to be a member of this church or any church. Come forward at the direction of the usher. Pick up a piece of bread, gluten or non-gluten, and dip it in the cup. If you are not sure what to do, ask, and we are glad to explain. The cup contains grape juice. Children of any age may receive if their parents are comfortable, or you may bring them forward and we will give them a simple blessing. 7 ANNOUNCEMENTS & EVENTS October 1, 2017 TODAY: Capital Campaign Summary Conversation Sunday, October 1 11:30am You are invited to a summary conversation about the Capital Campaign. The Capital Campaign had its official kick-off in 2012 and we will formally mark the end of the campaign in November on All Saints Day. You are invited to this meeting to discuss the financial aspects of the campaign. This includes the original goals, how much was pledged, how much was raised, and how much was spent. We will also talk about ending the remaining gaps and what we learned from this experience. We especially want to thank you for your generosity and see if we have any unfinished business to attend to before we proceed with the celebration in November. Come with your question for input. Mindfulness Meditation Sunday, Oct. 8 & 22 at 11:30am The Mindfulness Practice Group has decided to meet twice a month on the second and fourth Sunday s for Mindfulness Meditation in the Chapel. Request for Altar Flower Donation Altar flower donations are needed for Sunday, October 8th. The cost of the arrangement is $50 with a check payable to the Congregational Church of Needham. 8 Calling all Bakers! As part of our Membership care efforts, the desire has been expressed to improve upon our coffee hour offerings. And what better way than to offer home-made baked and nut free goodies, including also gluten free items. Rev. Heike invites anyone to a monthly afternoon of baking at the church. The dates are October 18, November 15, and December 20, 2017 in the 1154 GPA kitchen. We can bake a lot in one afternoon and then freeze the goods for Sunday s coffee hour. If you wish to contribute to coffee hour but cannot help us bake, we gratefully accept donations. Please contact Rev. Heike if you want to help or donate. Bible Study Please join us in the reception room from 11:30-12:30 for Bible Study. We gather to read and discuss a few chapters of the Bible each week. This fall we will be reading Revelations. Would you like to contribute to the life of our church, but are worried that you might not have the time? Consider ushering! Get ready for another season of CHIMING! Rehearsals have begun, and we welcome any--men, women, young adults, youth--who wants to join in music making. You don't have to be a musician or read music (Many of our chimers mark their music with the 2 NOTES they play), but you will need 2 good arms/wrists, an ability to keep time as you make music with others, and commitment to coming to rehearsals (after church 11:30-12:15). We are looking for regular chimers and subs (who cannot make a regular commitment). Our leader Crosby Goshgarian makes chiming a lot of fun, and everyone is so patient and encouraging. We welcome new faces! This is a great way to meet and mingle with other members of your church family. Bake! Bakers needed! What s your specialty? Pies, breads, cookies, bars? Maybe even a cake? Baked goods can be dropped off at Fellowship Hall on Friday, November except for pies, which should be dropped off the morning of the Fair. Pie pans will be available for pie bakers to pick up starting in mid-october. Knit! Do you have a talent for knitting and needlework? Consider sharing your talents, with a handmade donation to our Knitting and Handcrafts Table. Donate! What can you donate? All kinds of things!

9 Used Books --Pass on those summer reads and other used books! (CDs, DVDs and puzzles welcome, too.) Timeless Treasures Wondering what to do with Great Aunt Tillie s candlesticks? Or that vase you received for your wedding that you ve just never used? Pass them on to someone who will cherish them! We welcome donations of dishes, glassware, vases, linens, decorative items and the like. Jewelry Take a look through your jewelry box (check in the back!) If you find something that you don t wear any longer, please consider donating it. Donations of both fine and costume jewelry accepted. Donations of hand knit items, used books, jewelry, and items for Timeless Treasures can be left on the stage in Fellowship Hall -- at the back left corner behind the curtain. Please label your box or bag Village Fair. Garden Fence Christmas-related items -- green wreaths, small trees, ornaments and decorative items, as well as interesting containers and baskets -- can be repurposed into new decorations and displays to bring joy as a gift or to brighten your own home during the holidays. Recycle, Re-purpose, Re-invent The EMT team is looking for donated items such as wine corks, wooden picture frames (medium to large size), battery powered candles, old mirrors, fall and holiday silk flowers and foliage -- which can be given new life and repurposed into new creations. A team of Deacons and Board Members has initiated a review of our Church s bylaws to identify areas where updates would be helpful. The intent is to have any proposed changes ready for Congregational review in the late fall and for a vote at next January s Annual Meeting.

10 The team is not contemplating changing the Church s governing structure. We are considering clarifying responsibilities of Church Committees (including the Board and Deacons), as well as clarifying which Board actions require approval of the Congregation at an Annual or Special Meeting. We are also Plan to make the Parish and Pastoral Relations Committee (PPRC) a permanent Committee of the Church.
