An open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ The Feast of All Saints and Souls Stewardship Month #PrayItForward Service of Holy Communion Farewell Service for Rev. Jim Mitulski November 4, 2018 at 10 am

Welcome to our worship service. Please join us for refreshments and time for fellowship immediately following the service. PRELUDE GATHERING SONG (see insert) Meditation Franz Schubert ( ) We Are Called ANNOUNCEMENTS CONGREGATIONAL GREETING OPENING PRAYER The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God our Mother and Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. AND ALSO WITH YOU. Let us pray Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #299 (Black, New Century) ANTHEM A Selection of Readings for All Saints and All Souls Day For All the Saints In This Very Room Once in a While Choir 1 Corinthians 15:51-57 Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2

Revelation 21:1-6 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. God will dwell with them as their God; they will be God s peoples, and God will be with them; God will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also this one said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. Then this one said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. MUSIC FOR MEDITATION Arlington by Wailing Jennys (for reference poem to Arlington by Wailing Jennys) Where do you go little bird When it snows, when it snows When the world turns to sleep Do you know, do you know Is there something in the wind Breathes a chill in your heart and life in your wings Does it whisper 'start again' Start again Where is the sun in the night Is it cold, is it cold Does it feel left behind All alone, all alone Does it wander through the dark Does it wait for the dawn, wish on a star Does it stray very far Very far Where is your home restless wind Is it there, is it here Do you search for a place to belong Search in vain, search in fear Or is your spirit everywhere Is your voice every tree Your soul of the air If there's no home is there no death Is there no death Songwriters: Tara Nicole (Nicky) Mehta 3

SERMON Rev. Jim Mitulski OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS In each of our pews today is a black friendship book which we encourage you to fill out and pass to the person next to you during the offering. If you have been with us before, just put down your name, but if you are new today, please let us know who you are. Thanks! Offertory Anthem More Love Mark Miller Shepherd s Staff and Chancel Choirs Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise God, all creatures here below, Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Prayer of Dedication CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION God is with you AND ALSO WITH YOU Let us lift up our hearts WE LIFT THEM UP TO GOD Let us give God thanks and praise IT IS A GOOD AND JOYFUL THING TO DO It is a good and joyful thing to do, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Loving God, creator of heaven and earth We thank you for the lives of our loved ones, near and far, past and present, all those whom we love but no longer see. And we remember these people by name (we invite you to share aloud the names of our loved ones) Therefore we join our voices with angels and archangels, and all the company of heaven who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your names: HYMN #793 (Black, New Century) Santo, santo, santo, mi corazón te adora! Mi corazón te sabe decir: santo eres Dios. Holy, holy, holy, my heart, my heart adores you! 4

My heart is glad to say the words: you are holy God. Words of Institution Prayer of Consecration As a sign of unity we pray together the prayer of Jesus Our Father and Mother in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your reign come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Sharing of the Bread and Cup EVERYONE is welcome to receive the Bread and Cup. You don't need to be a member of this church or any church. Come forward at the direction of the usher. Pick up a piece of glutenfree bread,, and dip it in the cup. If you are not sure what to do, ask, and we are glad to explain. The cup contains grape juice. Children of any age may receive if their parents are comfortable, or you may bring them forward and we will give them a simple blessing. Everyone is welcome, without exception. If you would like communion brought to you, let the usher know and we are happy to bring it to you in your seat. Communion Music (You are welcome to sing these hymns during communion) Amazing Grace (see insert) A Place At the Table (see insert) Reprise of In This Very Room In this very room there's quite enough love for all the world, 5

And in this very room there's quite enough joy for all the world, And there's quite enough hope and quite enough power to chase away any gloom, For Jesus, Lord Jesus... is in this very room. Prayer after Communion Father and Mother of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Liturgy of Release and Prayer for Rev. Mitulski Moderator: Our church family is constantly changing. People come and go. Babies are born. Children grow up. People commit themselves to one another. Loved ones and friends among us come to the end of their lives. Individuals move into our communities and church life. Others leave us, moving away to new places, new experiences, and new opportunities. It is important and right that we recognize these times of passage, of endings and beginnings. This morning we lift up the ministry of Rev. Jim Mitulski and we share this time of farewell with him. RECOGNITION OF THE END Deacon: In August, 2016, Rev. Jim Mitulski began his service as pastor of this church. Reverend Mitulski: I thank the Congregational Church of Needham, its members and friends, for the love, kindness, and support shown me these last 2 years. I ask forgiveness for the mistakes I have made. I am grateful for the ways my leadership has been accepted. As I leave, I carry with me all that I have learned here. Congregation: We receive your thankfulness, offer forgiveness, and accept that you now leave to minister elsewhere. We express our gratitude for your time among us. We ask your forgiveness for our mistakes. Your influence on our faith and faithfulness will not leave us at your departure. Reverend Mitulski: I forgive you and accept your gratitude, trusting that our time together and our parting are pleasing to God. 6
