1 An open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ December 30, 2018 at 10 am So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing covered up that will not be uncovered, nothing hidden that will not be made known. What I say to you in the dark you must repeat in broad daylight; what you hear whispered you must shout from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul. Fear him rather [God] who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. [The Revised English Bible] Matthew 10:26-28

2 Welcome to our worship service. Please join us for refreshments and time for fellowship immediately following the service. PRELUDE GATHERING SONG #165 (Black, New Century) Love Came Down at Christmas GREETING and ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. The light shines even in the places where shadows darken our lives. Rejoice, then, you people, for Christ s presence lives among us, and brings joy to the world. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #129 (Black, New Century) Good Christian Friends, Rejoice PRAYER OF CONFESSION Light of the world, you gave us the transforming birth of the child Jesus as a light for our path. Yet we confess that we don t see the light for what it really is. We were dazzled by the glitter and tinsel the world has made of Christ s birth. We admit we don t know what to do with the gift you have given us. We want your Spirit to be lit within us, that we may share your gifts of peace and justice with all people. We seek to receive, and return the gift of Christ s birth and death, again and again. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON TIME FOR ALL AGES ANTHEM Suo Gan traditional Welsh arr. Judith Herrington and Kyle Haugen Sleep my baby; rest my loved one, warm and tender in my arms. Soft and gentle love surrounds you: may you sleep safe from harm. I will not let harm come near you as you dream in restful sleep. Hush, my sweet one as your loving watch I keep, your loving watch I keep. 2

3 READINGS Ephesians 1:15-23 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. Matthew 10: (see front cover) HYMN #158 (Black, New Century) O Morning Star SERMON Be the PUBLIC Church Rev. Rick Chrisman HYMN #126 (Black, New Century) Angels from the Realms of Glory COMMUNITY PRAYERS Concerns and Celebrations Prayers for Our Friends and Families, Our Church, Our Community, and the World. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen. 3
