Arthur our student of the month Arthur is a Clawson High School senior. He is 17 years old and will be graduating in June.

Arthur is the oldest of four children, his younger brother also comes to our center. He lives with his mom, dad, brother and two sisters.

During senior year, Arthur was on the varsity football and basketball teams.

In school, his favorite class is construction. Outside of school, Arthur enjoys skateboarding and designing clothes for himself.

The book tells the story about a talented inner city basketball player, Greg Slam Harris, who is doing poorly in school.

4 Arthur our student of the month Arthur is a Clawson High School senior. He is 17 years old and will be graduating in June. He hopes to attend Michigan Technical and Career Institute in Plainwell MI and take classes in carpentry. Arthur is the oldest of four children, his younger brother also comes to our center. He lives with his mom, dad, brother and two sisters. His family also includes two dogs, Chuck and Sophia. Arthur is a quiet, hardworking young man and a fine athlete. During senior year, Arthur was on the varsity football and basketball teams. For the first time ever, he is on the track team and got a first place in the 100 yard dash and high jumping at the first meet of the season. In school, his favorite class is construction. Outside of school, Arthur enjoys skateboarding and designing clothes for himself. Arthur is currently reading Slam by Walter Dean Myers. The book tells the story about a talented inner city basketball player, Greg Slam Harris, who is doing poorly in school. Greg, the main character, has lots of talent as well as an explosive temper and needs to figure out which direction he wants to go in the future. The Children s Dyslexia Center has made a big impact for Arthur. Arthur feels more confident now and his reading and spelling skills have greatly improved. Arthur states that my teachers at school commented on how much better I m doing, and they have noticed a huge improvement in my schoolwork. 6 Freemasons in Stereo Ymelda Rivera Laxton, Assistant Curator Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library has over 50 Masonic and fraternal stereocards in our photograph collection. Stereocards, also known as stereoviews or stereographic views, are comprised of two identical photographic prints mounted on card stock. They are viewed through a stereoscope in order to produce a three-dimensional image. One highlight from our collection depicts Freemasons at the Acropolis in Athens. The intriguing stereocard, titled Masons at the Acropolis, Athens, shows forty men standing in front of the ruins of the Acropolis. Each man in the photograph has a number on his suit and wears a white apron. Who are these Freemasons? What year was this photograph taken? We are in the process of researching these questions and have found some information to help in identify the date. Masons at the Acropolis, Athens, Greece, , H.C. White Co., Bennington, VT, Gift of Michael T. Heitke, Collection of the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, A maker s stamp on the card reads H.C. White Company / Burlington, VT / The Artisque Coleur Stereograph /Patented April 14, Hawley C. White ( ) created the H.C. White Company in New York City in Hawley, a former spectacle lens manufacturer, moved the company to Bennington, Vermont, in The company was the primary producer of stereographs and stereoviews in the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s. H.C. White Co. was well known for their Travel Tour collections featuring stereoview book sets featuring travel adventures from around the world. White used original negatives specifically photographed for the company between 1899 and 1901 to print the company s first stereoviews.

White retired in 1915, as stereoviews began to decline in popularity. He sold his negative stock to Keystone Publishing and began manufacturing and selling Kiddie Kars, a popular children s tricycle.

This information helps us date the stereocard between 1899 and The title of the stereocard does not appear to be original to the card, so, who were these Masons and why were they gathered at the Acropolis? There is a record of Masons providing financial relief efforts to Greece after a devastating earthquake in There are also photographs of Greek Masons gathering at the Acropolis during the Greco Turkish War ( ), also referred to as the Asia Minor Catastrophe or Western Front of the Turkish War of Independence. The time frame of these two events does not correspond with the date the card was created and we don t believe this image is related to either event. The Supreme Council of Greece participated in the 1907 International Conference of Supreme Councils in Brussels, Belgium. There is a possibility this mystery Masonic group was related to that conference. We are calling all history enthusiasts to help us further identify this photograph. To see more images from our Stereocard collection, please visit our Museum Flickr page at: or search our online catalog at: Scottish Rite Day ~ Saturday, November 12, 2016 Northern Masonic and Southern Jurisdictions Come Together in First Nationwide Event Celebrating Our Fraternity On November 12, 2016, Michigan Valleys will come together to celebrate the Scottish Rite. It is the first time the fraternity has held such a nationwide day of honor. Commander McNaughton and Commander Seale are asking that everyone in both jurisdictions commemorate Scottish Rite Day. Our hope is that you see it as a chance to enjoy a fun, memorable occasion where you can reach out to and connect with your Brothers. Michigan is planning a statewide 32 conferral at the Bay City Scottish Rite Center. There will be entertainment for the ladies while the conferral is taking place. A social hour, banquet with entertainment, and dancing will round out the event. Thirty-third degree members will be asked to wear white tie and tails to the conferral and banquet and all others either a tuxedo or dark suit. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Bay City DoubleTree Riverfront Hotel ( ). Scottish Rite Day is meant to be an enjoyable, inspirational, and meaningful experience for our members. The event will also accord the 32 the recognition and prestige it deserves. A new jewel will be available in November 2016, to all who have been made a Scottish Rite Mason. Each candidate receiving his 32 will be presented this commemorative jewel free of charge; others may purchase this one-of-a-kind jewel for $25. There will be more information concerning the jewel and medallion in the months ahead.
