Josef Vollmer-König Dear Brother Knights, We begin our Advent journey; a journey toward Christmas. In our Church s celebrations, we celebrate the Past. The Advent time in the past is the time before the birth of Christ. The Jewish people were waiting for the promised Messiah to free them from slavery and oppression at different times in their history. They believed God would be true to His promise. They were waiting for an earthly savior. God s promise was fulfilled in Jesus, therefore the title given Him, Christ, which means Savior. In the gospel of St. Luke 2:21-40, we read about Simeon and Anna who had been waiting their whole life for the Messiah. Mary and Joseph presented the infant Jesus as prescribed by the Law and Simeon and Anna were present. Both recognized the infant Jesus as the Messiah and praised God. We celebrate the Present. We celebrate Christ s coming now in our time in our lives. He comes to us in Sacred Scriptures; He is the Word that became flesh. He is present to us in the Eucharist; His own words to us are This is my Body. We encounter Christ in our neighbor; He tells us whatsoever you do to the least among you, you do to me. Therefore Advent time is not only the four weeks before December 25 when we celebrate His birth; Advent time is every day of our lives, preparing ourselves to be ready for Christ. Our liturgical celebrations remind us to prepare and be ready for His coming. This is a joyful time, because we await our Messiah, our Savior. God s blessings, Father Josef Grand Knight s Letter Dear Brother Knights: By John Guerra During November, I had the opportunity to attend the Memorial Mass and several funerals for fellow Knights. I always feel proud to be a member of this Order when I see fellow Knights attending the funerals. I m especially honored when I see the 4 th degree Color Corps present at a funeral of a departed Sir Knights. I m looking forward to them attending at my funeral someday. This is another benefit of 4 th degree membership. While attending one of the funerals, I got to thinking (remembering) why I joined the KC. No, it wasn t just the pool. You see, I had two young children and I wanted them to grow up in a strong Catholic community. The pool was just a reflection of that community. So you might say I joined the KC for two reasons: 1) to makes friends who share common goals of charity; and 2) so that my children can see myself and others live the faith. I m proud to bring my children to KC events. I encourage those of you who are parents to do the same. I hope that, together, we continue to be good examples of Christian family life. We can do this at our pool, at the KC parties and any time when Knights get together. I encourage you to attend KC family events as a family. For example, this month we host the Kids Christmas Party, which is a great opportunity to enjoy fellowship with other families. Remember that we must also show the children that parents sometimes need parent-time to nurture their marriage. Plan a date night if you can. This month, we have the Annual Awards Banquet and Christmas Party on a Friday night. However is best for your family, I encourage you to get involved with the KC. 3 Firehouse 31 Benefit Breakfast Recap Thank you to all who supported our Firehouse 31 Benefit Breakfast on Sunday, October 26 th. Your generous donations were accepted by the first responders at Station 31 and were used toward a microwave oven and chain saw for their use. For all these men and women do for us, we are extremely grateful! Annual Awards Banquet 2014 Annual Awards Banquet Dec 5... and... Christmas Party All Council members and wives are welcome and encouraged to attend the Awards Banquet and Christmas Party on Friday, December 5. This will be a party, in addition to the general meeting on Tuesday, Dec 3. The evening s festivities will begin with a dinner buffet at no charge beginning at 7:00 p.m. Our honorees and dignitaries in attendance will be treated to table service at 7:30 p.m. and the program will start at the same time. As has been the case the last couple of years, several of our Brothers will be honored for their distinguished service to the Council. After the awards, we ll enjoy some fellowship. Sir Knights are encouraged to wear their tuxedos. For more information, contact John Guerra at johnguerra5@gmail.com or Kaycee Club Update The Kaycee Club board is working on the proposed Pool Benefits document, as well as new pricing options for the coming pool season. The pool benefits document is a newly drafted (written) policy that will outline the pool benefits for Knights (and outside members), including some key dates associated with pool membership. Furthermore, new pricing options may also help with pool planning, and make pool membership more affordable for some Knight families. Below are some key concepts. Please attend the January Kaycee Club business meeting for more information. Types of Membership: (only select one) Knight Only Membership: Available to Knights and their spouses. Requires one-time assessment fee if under 55 years old. Must submit pool application to use pool tags for access to the pool. Key Dates Knight must be current on Council dues as of March 31. Family Membership: For Knights and immediate family members living in their household. This option is good for families that use the pool frequently during the summer season. Deadline for pool application and pool fee (if applicable): May 15. Prepaid Pool Guest Passes: A new pricing option available to Knights only, allowing Knights to pre-pay for a block of 10 guest passes at a lower price. This lower cost option may be good for Knights that visit the pool less frequently or who do not wish to buy the full family membership Any failure to meet either of these dates will result in late fees and processing delay Failure to maintain good standing in the Council may result in suspension without notice until he is in good standing in the Council. Termination of a Member's membership in the Council, for any reason, shall automatically and immediately terminate his pool privileges. Knights of Columbus - Dallas Council 799 Page 3

John Shaver, , John.Shaver@kofc.org Volunteer needed to Drive Bishops to/from Conference The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) has selected Dallas, Texas for their 2015 Bishop s Workshop to be held February 2nd through February 4th, Volunteer drivers are needed. We need the Volunteer Driver/Greeter to sign up online at no later than January 12th, Boy s Knight Out The next Boy s Knight Out will be the second seasonal matchup with our bitter rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles! Join us December 14 when the Dallas Cowboys travel to The Linc for a showdown with the hated Iggles in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Come to the KayCee Lounge and enjoy a beverage (or two) and good food while the Cowboys whoop the birds. Bring a friend and try our drink specials! Kids Christmas Party December 14, 3-5 pm we will host our Kids Christmas Party in the KC Hall. This event got iced out last winter due to weather. This year, we have been told that St. Nick is going to make an appearance. Come see what St. Nick is up to and enjoy an afternoon of fun with your fellow Knights and their families. Angel Tree In the Season of Giving and with Charity as our First Order, please consider providing a happy holiday to a deserving child who otherwise might go without. Please check at the Dec 2nd meeting to get one or two angels from the tree. Each kid will have a clothing and a toy item on the angel so please be generous. If someone does not have the time to shop but wants to get an angel, they can select one and bring money to the KayCee Lounge and David Salazar will go out and buy their gifts for you. All gifts should be dropped off at the KayCee Lounge unwrapped and with the Angel attached to the bag. Please call David Salazar for more information Montserrat Retreat Our recently departed brother Al Barbosa was an avid proponent of the Montserrat Jesuit Retreat. He believed strongly in the peace, quiet, and prayer that participants enjoy in their journey toward Christ. 5 Tamale Sales Tamales can be ordered online by December 1 at: The tamales will be ready to pickup at the KC Hall on Sunday, December 14 from 6-8 pm, and on Tuesday, December 16 from 7-9 pm. Extra tamales will be sold first-come-first serve. Knight and Family of the Month In November, the Council honored Tyler Denault as Knight of the Month. Tyler Denault helped out with the Firefighters benefit pancake breakfast. He showed up willing to help anywhere, and was put in charge of cooking most of the pancakes. His cheerful work in the kitchen and willingness to jump in earned him the KOTM award. We presented two Family of the Month awards at the November meeting. First, we honored the Billy Lepak family for their work organizing and managing the successful Trunk or Treat that was held in late October. In addition to KC, the Lepak family has been active in several ministries at St. Patrick Catholic Church another example of Knights supporting the parish. We also honored the Ortiz family. Andy Ortiz, and his son, Christopher Ortiz, are bother Knights in this Council. They both were great helps with the grill team at the Trunk or Treat, and stayed until the very end to help clean up the trash left behind in the parking lot. True examples of Knights supporting the behind-the-scenes work that make our events enjoyable for the rest. Monthly Meeting Highlights Family Movie On December 21, KC will show the The Muppet Christmas Carol in the downstairs hall 3-5 pm. Families are invited to attend together. (Popcorn and drinks provided.) Chili Cookoff Postponed Chili Cookoff was postponed until January 18. Please watch your and newsletter for details. New applicants are required to attend an orientation meeting to get more information and meet with the Membership Committee.
