Who are the saints we celebrate? The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains a Saint is The holy one who leads a life in union with God through the grace of Christ and receives the reward of eternal life. All of us are called to be Saints. The Church, throughout its history, has declared members of the faithful saints, for example, Mary the Mother of Our Lord and the Apostles. The beatification of John Henry Newman was officially proclaimed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on 19 September And at the beginning of October 2011, our Holy Father declared six new saints. They are: Mary MacKillop ( ), the first Australian, St. André Bessette ( ), St. Candida Maria de Jesus Cipitria y Barriola a Spanish religious; ( ), St. Stanislao Soltys ( ), a Polish religious, St. Giulia Salzano ( ), and St. Battisat da Varano ( In our liturgical celebration we celebrate their feast days. Pope Francis canonized two new saints, St. John XXIII and St. John Paul II. We call on them as intercessors. There are many unnamed saints. Children at baptism are without sin. They are incapable of committing sin. Should they die, they are in the presence of God and therefore are saints. Many faithful who are never canonized, who lived their lives in union with God are saints. I am sure all of us can remember such a person. In the Creed we declare we believe in the communion of saints. We through our baptism belong to this communion. We celebrate what we are called to be. St. Pope John Paul II reminded us, Let us look at the saints who are valiant witnesses of fidelity to Christ; let us be inspired by their example in climbing the mountain of holiness. Be Saints! This as you well know- is every believers calling. On the day following the feast of All Saints, we celebrate All Souls Day by remembering all our family and friends that have gone before us. On November 11, we remember our Veterans for their service to this country. Let us remember one another in Prayer. God s blessings, Fr. Josef Vollmer-König, Chaplain Grand Knight s Letter Dear Brother Knights: By John Guerra In October, our Council launched a few new programs, and we will continue that trend in November. We need your support. Most importantly, we need your participation in promoting our Order s principles of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. Last month, we hosted several family friendly events. We launched the Domestic Church: Family Fully Aware program as put forward by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. This is a monthly program for family vocations. Each month (third Sunday), we will host a movie, a short family prayer, and a service project. November we will show It s a Wonderful Life. Please bring the whole family for this event. In October, we also hosted Trunk or Treat, and Pancake Breakfast, both successful events. In this coming month, we launch our first ever Pro Life Baby Shower in partnership with Catholic Daughters. We will be planning more opportunities for Knights and their spouses to get involved with activities at the KayCee Hall. We will also continue our member survey initiative to update member data. If you have not received an to verify your contact information, please GK@kc799.org. For those without addresses, your survey will be mailed with dues statements. Please make an effort to take in all the benefits of the Knights of Columbus. I encourage you to attend as many events as you can, support our lounge, and meet with our insurance agents. 3 A Letter from KayCee Club President Kirk Jockel To All KC 799 members, As part of your membership to Council 799 you enjoy the opportunity to also be members of the Kaycee Club. This membership is a privilege that comes with certain rules and responsibilities that you and all members of your family must follow. The pool and lounge at the KayCee Club is a privilege, not a right. With such privilege also comes a certain amount of responsibility. You and your family are one of 2,370 member families at our club. A club this size must have rules and regulations and they must be respected and followed by all members. I would like to go over a few of the basic rules and explain why we have such rules. Number one, you cannot bring alcohol onto the Club s property or take alcohol off of our property. We do not have this rule because we want your money. Well okay we do, but that is not the reason for the rule. IT S STATE LAW. The club is an owner of a Texas alcohol license, violation of this law, puts the Club s license in jeopardy. Without a license gentleman, we would have to close our doors. It s that simple. Do you or your wife want to be the one that causes that to happen? Number two, rude, dismissive, or anything less than courteous behavior to any staff member or guest is absolutely, for any reason, unacceptable. Snapping your fingers or pounding your fist on the bar is not an acceptable way to get the Bar Tender to serve you ahead of all the other patrons who are patiently waiting their turn. Number three, the kitchen is not a short cut to the lounge or pool. It is a health code violation to have the public walking through the kitchen. You re also putting our kitchen staff at risk of injuring you or themselves. The kitchen is a noisy place, what if a cook doesn t hear you and suddenly turns around with a knife in their hands, or a pan of hot grease or water and your standing right there. You wouldn t do it at any other restaurant, hotel or Club, so why do it here. Number four, do not walk through a rental event. Gentleman this is common sense. If you were paying several thousand dollars to hold an event up at the Club, you would not like strangers walking through your event. Please respect our guests and be Catholic Gentleman and walk around the building to use another entrance. All four of these rules were violated numerous times on the night of the Trunk or Treat. A Club our size must have rules of conduct and we all must follow those rules for the good of the Club and more importantly for the survival of the Club. Like it or not we have a big piece of property that has a large operating budget. An operating budget that is provided for not through dues from all its members, but by providing quality services to its members and to the general public, be it outside pool memberships or hall rentals. It takes all of us to do our part to make the KayCee Club a successful organization. Memorial Mass Tuesday November 11 On behalf of the Brother Knights of the Knights of Columbus Dallas Council 799, we invite you to join us on Tuesday, November 11th for the Memorial Mass Service for all Deceased Knights of Council 799, with a special remembrance of the decedents from the past year. We will begin with 6:30 pm Mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 9643 Ferndale Road, Dallas, Texas, Following the Mass, we will gather at Council 799 in the upstairs hall (10110 Shoreview Road, Dallas, TX a short trip south of the Church) where we will host a reception to continue our fellowship - hors d oeuvres and beverages will be served. 4 Pro Life Baby Shower November 9 Knights, please help us get the word out: Please support our Dallas area women's pregnancy centers. The pregnancy centers provide front-line support and counseling to pregnant mothers. The White Rose Women s Centers and Birth Choice Dallas provide free pregnancy testing, education, counseling, and supplies to their clients. We need your support to keep their maternity gift closets full. Knights of Columbus Council 799 and Catholic Daughters of America Court 1719 have teamed up to support these great organizations. On Sunday, November 9, 2014, 1-3 pm, please come by the KC Hall (10110 Shoreview Road, Dallas, TX 75238) to make a donation to support the pregnancy centers. This will be a fun baby shower type event with light refreshments and games. You may come and go as you like. However, we will have representatives from the pregnancy centers available at 2 pm to speak about their organizations and answer any questions you may have. Please bring either unwrapped gifts or a monetary donation. Gifts they need include: Diapers (all sizes, especially sizes 4, 5, 6) Formula (powdered) Baby Clothes (new or gently used, 0-3 or 3-6 months) Baby Wash/Shampoo Bottles (BPA free) Pack and Play Please only bring new items, except for clothing. Only new car seats in the box may be accepted. Christ the King 5K Register now! Christ the King Catholic School Crusader 5K & 1 mile walk/run November 8th, 2014 Check-In: 7:00 a.m. Race Begins: 8:00a.m. The proceeds benefit CKS Athletics and the Casey Tull Memorial Scholarship Fund, which aids students in attending a Catholic School who otherwise could not attend. Register and pay online at CKS.org Council 6065 Bingo Knight The Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 6065 at St Mark the Evangelist Church in Plano would like to invite you and your wives to attend our Salute to our Military Bingo Knight on Saturday, November 15, The purpose of this event is to raise the necessary funds to benefit the numerous Military and Veterans Organizations and Projects supported by the Knights. You can Pre-Register for $25 on line in advance at Org. This Pre-Registration ends midnight November 13, It will cost $30 at the door the night of our event starting at 6:30 pm. Come for the eleven games with great prizes, and a chance to win a Grand Prize of $600 in Visa Cards. Refreshments and beverages (donations for beer and wine) are the fare for the evening and are included in the cost to attend. Knights of Columbus Eagle Pass Way, Allen, Texas Kids Christmas Party December 14, 3-5pm we will host our Kids Christmas Party in the KC Hall. This event got iced out last winter due to weather. This year, we have been told that St. Nick is going to make an appearance. Come see what St. Nick is up to and enjoy an afternoon of fun with your fellow Knights and their families. 5 Tamale Sales Please watch your for information on ordering tamales for December pickup. We will take orders until November 28. All prepaid orders will be available for pickup at the KayCee Hall on December 13. The tamales are $12/dozen, pork, chicken, beef, vegetarian, and desert options available. Monthly Meeting Highlights Chili Cookoff Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 14. This will be our Chili Cookoff Competition in the KC Lounge. Come watch the Cowboys take on the Philadelphia Eagles, and taste test chili made by your peers. More details on the competition rules will be shared at the December meeting and newsletter. We encourage you to get creative with your chili recipe. Building the Domestic Church: The Family Fully Alive Supreme Knight Carl Anderson recently announced a new initiative titled Building the Domestic Church: The Family Fully Alive stating through this program, our families can realize more fully their mission to be an authentic domestic church through daily prayer, catechesis and Scripture reading, as well as through monthly charitable and volunteer projects they can do as a family. Join our brother knights (and families) helping run this initiative: Mike McConnell, John Pelletier, Rob Hormillosa and Benji Vega. We'll meet at the KC hall once a month. Each meeting will have a theme, activities, and culminate with a family movie. The movie in November is "It's a Wonderful Life." Next meeting: Sunday, November 16, 3-5 PM in the lower hall. (Popcorn and drinks provided.) Knight & Family of the Month In October, the Council honored Michael Posey as Knight of the Month. Michael Posey graciously donated his time and materials to spray for poison ivy at the Hearts and Hammers house. That really made the project possible. Michael is also very involved at St. Patrick School another example of Knights leadership in our local parishes. Our Family of the Month award went to the Russ Gout family. Russ and his family supported our Ronald McDonald House effort in September. This was another example of a Knight family taking leadership of an event, from planning, coordinating, and soliciting volunteers. At our monthly meetings and scheduled events, we will have a shoe bin available to collect used shoes and apparel. This can be any age or gender just clean out your closet and bring them to our meeting. Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to men 18 years of age or older who are practical Catholics in union with the Holy See. How to join? New applicants are required to attend an orientation meeting to get more information and meet with the Membership Committee. The orientation will discuss the history, activities, and duties of being a Knight. Orientation meetings are held in the downstairs conference room the second Monday of every month at 7pm.
